decorating corner behind sectional

last year

I have had so much help from this discussion on helping with my projects. I had an interior decorator come and place decor in my den. I’m not real excited about this corner behind sectional. Could I get help on ideas on what I could do to this space???? Im starting to think about Christmas!

Is it a faux tree? I’ve moved away from those ( had one in my office for years).

None of the items on the table look especially good to me. I prefer the window view. But at night when blinds may be closed, that’s when maybe 1 item would look good. I wouldn’t try to just “ fill up” that corner with random stuff as usual there now.

If the tree is live, and tolerates or gets enough the light from those windows , or you think you’d like to buy a live ficus or similar, then as jck910 said, try it in the actual corner. Another option might be a large live snake plant centered on whatever table is back there , or a stand. Not if huge direct sun for that though. But if it’s set in several feet it’d probably be happy and they are survivors in low indoor light. The art on the wall might then be upsized to something that spans the table and part of the sectional. I like framing in general but the frame on current art seems heavy to me and I’d likely prefer a look of a larger rectangle where more of it was the actual attractive art.

The tree is not live! Thank you for your advice. Going to remove items! Might try the tree only or lamp. Any other comments?

Too much stuff. Remove half of the decor in the room; if you love all the pieces, put half of them away and then in 6 months bring them back out and put the others away.

I'd remove everything back there. Keep the tree in the corner ( raise it higher ) or better yet , get a real plant and either hang it form the ceiling or put on a pedestal.

Purchase a tall planter and boost the height of your artificial tree and place it in the corner.

  • last year

How tall of a planter would you get?

  • last year

Have you tried the corner without anything? There is a lot going on in the room-I'm not sure you need anything.

  • last year

I did try not placing anything in. Corner- it looked like it needed something. Just didn’t know what!

  • last year

Maybe when you have some time, take the items away and post a picture.

I would move tree on other corner behind chair and bring your floor lamp instead.

  • last year

I will try switching the lamp and tree. I am not a decorator!😱 Thank you!

  • last year

I agree I don’t think that corner needs anything. Definitely not an object like a plant. Perhaps a lamp in the corner or a couple of small pictures stacked on the wall.

    Some serious editing?

If you like the tree in corner? Give it a height boost, and remove ALL ELSE.

Lamps a pair, simpler. .......!! Skip the curly Q: ) please?

DE clutter the coffee table.....less is more

And remove at least 50% of stuff on the ledge.

Pillows? A BIT LESS busy....Tasty camel, wine, think velvets, and texture vs. pattern. Richer color and no white background. There's enough going on,,

IMO a perfect spot to have an arc light taht provides light aboive a coffee table and the center of a space . I for sure do not think that space needs a bunch of decor and fake plants or flowers . Where do you put your tree at Christmas since that is the season driving this question.I find the space quite dark so maybe a lighter colored rug ans al ot less stuff on ledges that just collect dust too. I think fake trees belong in the garbage always they do nothing to bring life into a space .

Thank you everyone that has given me some great ideas!

Jan Moyer, how many pillows do you suggest on sectional? Also, if you don’t mind , I would appreciate if you would tell me which of the pillows you posted—- (colors-plaid)and how would you arrange them. Thank you!

I would add something to the windows. Right now the cellular shades are boring. Maybe replace them with fabric or woven wood Roman shades. Then you wouldn’t need anything else in that corner.

  • last year

I am just so disappointed with this room. . The suggestion of replacing the shades is probably going to have to wait. Like ai mentioned in my post , I hired an an interior decorator ti decorator this room. She placed decor snd then added the cellular shade. ( pretty costly for all windows and door)
I too thought the widows needed something added or changed.
Thank you so much for your advice!

    30" tall for the planter

Place something in the bottom to weight it and then boost the tree more towards the top of the planter opening. I use plastic shopping bags to stuff the opening and then place dried moss on top to hide the bags.

Your room can look much better. There were some furnishing choices that could have been better for the space.

I would fine-tune the layout of your furnishings. No one wants to sit in that one chair in the corner. Your layout should be assembled to encourage conversation or TV watching. See revised layout below.

  • last year

Looks so much better. What color of drapes would you suggest! What color is the ones in pic?

  • PRO
    last year

IMO the rug pattern could go a long way to lifting the appearance of the room.

  • last year

Maybe start making some of the suggestions and see if you like it better. The room just has too much. Start by editing-coffee table, ledge, corner etc. Then you can go on to things that require spending money if you wish.

  • last year

Thank you everybody so very very much.

I'd advise you to refer to my posted plan and move the furnishings around to match that and then rephotograph the room.

The drapes should NOT be selected without coordinating it with the area rug.

    FIRST.......

Can you ditch the cuddle corner? These big beasts take over a room with scale and darkness, and put severe limits to arranging a room.

We've turned every room to a "bedroom sprawl"......grrrrr. or basement media locale and it isn't that, right?

    Clear off the coffee table

Boost the plant , ditch the flowers in the back corner

Take away the patterned pillows. ..... get online

Clear off the ledge to ONLY WHAT YOU MUST HAVE.

Pick a point for all the shades to hang at the SAME level.

( Note, I'l disagree on curtain panels. Will take too many and it's more clutter. ..I'd have done a nice natural woven shade , even with a privacy liner. More texture, casual....

A lot of this can be done in a few hours max

The coffee table and end tables feel TOO rustic.. a bit too garage sale or rescue. Is there an opposite gender in here George? Do you want man cave masculine or.... a little less man/ hunting lodge look and heavy?

Do you sit on the couch? Or only in the recliner? Put accurate dimensions to this - walls, openings slider etc all.

I really like the drawing layout! I just bought this home. Had sectional and asked if it would fit- if not ,I could sale and purchase new. I was told it would fit and work!😱 Might need to go ahead and work towards new sofa. Thank you!

Put really accurate dimensions on a drawing.....use mine, fine !! In the meantime, if you're full of u know what and vinegar? Yank that corner out.and try it. along with all above,

Return!!!! TO THREAD AND POST PICTURES.

Nothing wrong with the sectional for this room if you're trying to maximize seating.

I removed items behind sofa and on table. What are your thoughts?

    Also,Raised the tree.

  • PRO

For the most part? Better by quite a lot

    Just leveling the shades helps!

As to the corner piece out and a different arrangement?? I'd try it. Yes,.."seating however many does matter". But there are other ways to do it.

Admittedly, I loathe a ton of clutter, and how you want your space to feel, depends you.

You had another thread, and apparently an inattentive designer and you had no contract. At best, and unwittingly, she was a stylist and they are not the same. Maybe she interpreted your move from one home to another as " I am keeping most furniture, please accessorize my home" .......and she did not see a path to making any money. Nor did you get a fantastic room.

From the limits of a click and drag? We all see space differently.... prefer different things. A billion things can work...

I'd want just a wee less rustic, a bit more calm, more texture..

But that's me, not you, and certainly not everyone who'd post a visual here.!!.

    Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!

    See below...........

    Store the vase?

Clear off the console. If you need xmas balls etc? one large tray beneath tv and STOP.

Pull the chair forward a lot, nearer the coffee table- why on earth would I sit alone here? Or near the entry....

Does the xmas tree fit behind couch ? Is it THAT time already?

LOWER the art, please when you move it,

Take the end table away , move the standing lamp to that end of the couch. Use THAT end table between your recliner and bring that lamp with it,

    Store the curly Q lamp.

OR.........TRY no corner and single sofa, with the same continued edits: )

I appreciate you so much for you taking the time to draw out the layouts. Wish I had the knack for arranging and decorating!😱🤔
Here are pics after. Still need to change pillows and add basket( what are your suggestions on what to put in basket?I really like the wood shades, but since I just purchased and had installed the cellular shades, I’m going to have to wait on getting wood.
Had to leave satellite receiver due to not long enough cords! Now i have two more rooms to go!Master bedroom and office!😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
    Thank you soooo much!

    George?

That HAS to be Houzz Record!!! for tweaking and taking suggestion!

Get a nice BENCH.......pull it up for guests whenever..... adjust the art position, closer to light switch..center over a bench

Keep working on that ledge above?

An eye only can focus so much,.....the rest becomes NOISE

THE LEDGE IS MAKING ME NUTS

You do not need an old lady place mat under the floral on coffee table. Which would be better without the floral : ) A room can take only so much "faux"

    These........

Three on the coffee table, a stack of books, not one on every table

The ledge? a couple pots and a few more.......You NEED less and just because a ledge is there, does not mean you need to fill it!!!

  • last year

Will do! Thank you! Would a small bench work? The picture is 47” wide. If I place a wider bench than picture it wont center with picture due to console being too close.

  • PRO
    last year

Move the picture left a bit!!!! You can GO closer to the switch

All it needs is something below, same pillows or a cushion !!

    Center over a 54" bench!?

You are making great progress! I agree with Jan on the ledge-try to work on that too. No fake plants, just a few items grouped-not lined up.

Take all the stuff off the ledge. Every last bit

Put it alllllllll l on the dining room table, add a card table if you must

Take a picture of the entire "collection".

Stand up a couple tape measures in the mix, We'll have scale info

Measure the ledge, make a 2 d drawing that includes the pitch

    Return......................

I wouldn’t switch out the cellular shades; that’s quite an investment. I think you can make them work.

I know Jan doesn’t think much of the curtain idea but… It’s something that could be considered as opposed to replacing the shades.

At some point in future? Here's what I would do

You have inside mounted cell shades

I will guarantee......an INEXPENSIVE woven natural shade, OUTSIDE mount, right over those. For example? I used 36 w x 72 l they don't need to reach the bottom, you'll never lower to bottom!

Seven windows? See below for one,. More texture, less expense by a lot,. no multiple hanging panels ( UGH,) and no rods or rings necessary.

For the slider? Take the cell shades down and use just the woven, you can even get some with a privacy liner

    All in $$$???

94.18 x 5 windows ..........and the slider you add to that 500.00 bucks

WAY WAY LESS $$$$$ than hanging "strings" of panels, and a great look. No "waste" as the cellular shades remain beneath! Excellent insulation btw. for heat or cold

I see rust as the main color of your rug on my screen. The red sofa pillows really clash. Amazon has great pillow covers at a great price.

So !!!! Much better! Beware this faux floral stuff. You aren't Hobby Lobby.

Maybe the dining table for that faux on the coffee table. It' s supposed to have room for a drink.....: ) A book... etc.: )

Bench under the pic looks great. Even better if you LOWER the pic by four inches. You don't stand around in this room, You SIT in this room.
