Rearrange Formal Living/Dining

This is my living/dining room. I love my furniture but could use some thoughts on arranging it.
My must keep in the room is the sofa, the secretary, the dining table and buffet. Love the blue chair but can use elsewhere if necessary. The two bamboo chairs I bought separately and thought they were the same size but they’re not and am willing to lose those.

Thoughts?

    A couple more

You have a beautiful room already but I understand the desire for change. I'll give a few suggestions but since I'm not sure about measurements they may not work. It looks like the secretary could fit where the black cabinet is now. I would then put the couch against the wall, the two black chairs flanking the round table in the window and the blue chair on an angle facing the window. I would also move the buffet to the far wall to be parallel to the table. If you have a leaf for the table I would put it in and line the chairs up on either side of the table. The black cabinet to the stair wall if there is room. I would probably close the doors on the secretary. Take a rainy weekend to move things around and come back with your "after" pics.

Those are some of the things I was thinking of. I will give that a try!

Ok moved things around. I sorry for the dark pics. I’m missing a couple lamps and need to pick up lightbulbs. I like the couch and chairs in the window. But I feel like the table is more squished with the buffet on that wall. But I do like that picture over the buffet instead of the other.

Wow, that was fast. I like the new look, but I also liked your original room. I wonder if you can shift the whole living room portion a little bit towards the window to allow the table to shift over. My only other suggestion would be to use the two end chairs to flank the buffet when not in use. I agree that the picture looks nice over the buffet so even if you move it back I would also move the picture.

I like the chairs on the side.

    Here’s an over view

Your room is beautiful! You have a good eye for decor.

    Thanks Nelliebean!

Another arrangement to try would be to move the couch back under the windows, remove the blue chair from the room and put the secretary on the tall wall where you originally had the blue chair. Leave the dining table and buffet where you have them currently. There might not be a good location for the black chest. I like the narrow bit of wall on either side of the windows empty; any piece of furniture looks too crammed in those tight spaces IMO. Also, if you could remove two dining room chairs from the room it would allow some breathing space in the dining area. Maybe just bring them out when you need them? Anyway, just some things to think about. You have nice things!

PS. Or keep the blue chair and remove one or two of the small black wood chairs.

I moved the two end chairs out of the room. I like this layout and my husband says he loves it every time he walks through it

Here are some pictures. I know there is less separation between living and dining spaces but I feel like the living space is cozier.

We almost never use this light/fan. I would rather have a chandelier over the table. Would it look odd the swag the chain of a chandelier over, I don’t want to move the electrical.

    Here

Yes! Removing the two end chairs allowed space for the buffet in its old location. My only thought is that the secretary is oversized for that narrow wall to the left of your windows. But seems that is the only place for it if you still want it in the room. Excellent that your husband likes the new arrangement!

I can’t imagine that a light fixture swaged from your current electrical location would be a good look, especially with your high ceilings. But maybe someone else has an idea or different opinion.

Any thoughts on new blinds. Maybe bamboo Roman shades?

New bamboo blinds would be great. Your windows are so nice and big and such an important feature in the room. In the meantime, I wonder what you would think about removing the curtain panels on the windows . They don’t look functional (?) and look rather crammed in place. Removal would lighten things up a bit.

Correct the panels aren’t functional, but feel like I do need fabric over there to soften the edges/room. I will take them down tomorrow and see how it looks. What else would you put on the windows? Bamboo blinds and some kind of valance?

Ok, here are the added tables and added and made bed a cpl lamps

Your dog!! Mine would be all right up in it like yours!! LOL

I'm intrigued with your style. It's traditional, yet you throw in the bamboo chairs, coffee table & jars with a little chinoiserie.

I'm wondering if you can turn the rug 90degrees? It seems long on the blue chair end.

Are the red plaid items your daily look or are they for holidays? It's a lot of mixed items and styles in the room which isn't bad, but I think could be styled better. not by me lol, but someone on here :)

Maybe some items can be grouped more instead of lined up along surfaces.

The black bamboo chairs in the LR look like they could use a cusion. Even a thin one to add some color/light and keep them from fading into the background.

Just to add my picky thoughts… I like the less cluttered look of the room without the end table on the couch side of the buffet. If removed, there is more separation between dining and living area and that feels better (to me at least). I’m also distracted by the stuff in the upstairs loft, especially the shelving unit that is pushed against the railing. My eye keeps going up there - too much visual stimulation IMO. Taking a few things away at this point might result in a calmer room.

Just wanted to say it is a pleasure to read this thread and see how quickly you made such great changes. I love the current results. Glad you are keeping some curtains to soften the edges. I think bamboo blinds will look great.

Just callmepool: thanks, I like traditional, maximalism and Ralph Lauren - though I can’t afford him! I do need cushions for the bamboo chairs and yes could always use help with styling. The red plaid is mostly for the holidays, I do need a couple throws, just not sure what yet and yes also, I was just looking at the rug in the picture and I can turn it now that I rearranged stuff.

Lisa, the stuff upstairs is mostly a pile going to charity tomorrow morning. I need serious help with the loft though. And I mean SERIOUS. The round table next to the couch… I am not completely in love with it either, still thinking about it. Maybe I will move the gold table by the blue chair out and put it there.

    Thanks Kendrah!

Ok moved the table between couch and buffet

    Whoops wrong pics

    Here we go

I will rotate the rug tomorrow

Well, I don’t think the rug works in that direction. The rug needs to be pulled into the bay window space or else it sits under the dining chairs. Then the couch doesn’t sit on it at all. Do I need a smaller rug?

Hi Terri. Good idea to try the rug rotation but I agree it worked better in its original position. I think the size works. I like how the dining and living rooms feel a bit more separate after moving the round end table to the blue chair. What do you think?

One other suggestion but of course this might be just me… I like the idea of removing the two small paintings and candle holder from the wall between the DR and LR. They just seem to be randomly hung whereas the two larger paintings are centered over the couch and look good there. And it would be fun to see what it looks like with the two curtain panels removed. 🤗

Lisa, yes I like the table moved next to the blue chair for sure. I will pull those pictures and candle holder down and curtains to see how it goes.

Okay, no curtains with artwork removed

Terri, you are so great about trying every suggestion! Curious about what you think. I love both changes. Removal of the curtain panels really shows off your beautiful secretary and gives more needed space to the framed silhouette on the opposite side. And removal of the two paintings and candle holder makes the room feel more expansive to me and gives additional separation of DR and LR. Sometimes eliminating things makes me appreciate the remaining items more.

And I like your idea of new bamboo blinds. Your windows are such a huge feature in the room. New blinds would really enhance them.

Wow, I like it, Although I've liked all the arrangements and I'm not even sure if I have a favourite.

    Thanks Nelliebean!

Lisa, with the bamboo shades, would you mount inside window or outside? Also would you add any kind of fabric valance? Also, should I bring the pictures above the sofa down just a bit?

well that rug does not work that direction, you are correct! When you turn it back I'd like to see some chair legs on the rug.

I love removing the curtains and also those two random arts. Lisalane is right on

Hi Terri, I’m no expert on window coverings. Do you ever raise your blinds or are they always down? And if always down, are you happy with the amount of light they let into the room? Also wondering if you ever adjust the louvers. Lots of things to think about before forging ahead. I picture some kind of textured, woven blind, inside mount. I’m not usually a huge fan of curtains, but that is just me. We need some window covering experts to weigh in. Justcallmepool or Nelliebean or anybody?

I'm not an expert about anything, but I love my woven blinds.

I like the look of woven blinds or bamboo shades. I think inset would be the easiest. I have to say, I've loved watching the evolution of your room.

With a woven blind, should I do a valance of some kind? I just always feel like there should be fabric on windows.
