Holiday Decorating: Timing?

My apartment complex is starting to put up Christmas decorations today. They look very nice but Thanksgiving seems like it has been totally skipped over. The management and a bunch of the tenants did decorate for Halloween and had treats for the children.

They make a big deal of Christmas here with contests with prizes for the best decorated door/patios.

    Thanksgiving doesn’t mind.

I refuse to do Christmas before December 1st.

I remember a Peanuts ”Christmas Is” book from the 1960s with the characters bemoaning the same thing: Christmas is decorations going up “the day after Halloween and Thankgsiving isn’t even here yet.”

I always keep my pumpkins until Thanksgiving’s over.

Fall/Autumn is my favorite time of the year and so I keep my Fall decorations up until sometime during the first week in December.

No grandkids as yet, and no trick-or-treaters with us living here in our small mountain community, so I didn’t even decorate for Halloween this year.

Chloebud your pumpkin decorating is gorgeous, I love the different colors.

Thanks, Lucillle! I always like having a variety, and they last a long time.

I think my theme will be more "wintry" then Christmas; especially since I don't do red, period. So I plan to do a lot of my decorating by Thanksgiving, but OTOH I use live trees and garland and they may look too dry by Christmas if I do that.

I decorated for Fall/Halloween this year. Halloween came down on November 1st. The the fall stuff stayed, and I added Thanksgiving - not much: a pair of brass turkeys on my dining room table, preschool craft turkeys made by my boys, and a pair of pilgrim salt and pepper shakers from Publix. (Anyone in the south remember that commercial?)

I’ll start decorating for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving.

I will decorate the week of Thanksgiving probably as I do not host Thanksgiving.

I mean, Halloween and Christmas are SEASONS. Fun seasons that people like. Thanksgiving is a day. A lovely day to some. To me, While I love it, Thanksgiving is work. Lots of work. Also, speaking from experience trying to find decorations to deck out my office, there just isnt that much out there unless you want a sort of neutral "fall" theme. However, I will share the decorations I did at my office, to show my support in respecting the day. ( I will most definitley NOT be waiting until Thanksgiving to swap it over to Christmas. Frankly, Christmas is too involved and too much work and too expensive to have up for only a month.)

I found a 100 ft roll of plastic leaf tablecloth that I used to cover the walls, and some photo backdrops to cover the windows. Oodles of magnets. Fast, easy to put up and take down and make a noticeable change.

I managed to find some office light covers. I think they are for classrooms but they were the perfect size. Again, fast, easy, impactful. ( You can spy to the far left of the pic, I was in the process of taking down Halloween and putting up Thanksgiving at the same time tee hee. I had not gotten that side down yet, thus the purple lights over there.)

    My name game!

More photo backdrops ( there are 6 huge windows to cover, a thanksgiving bin to hold the packs of coffee and some random stuffies.

    My thoughts!

MTN, do you use a potted really living tree or do you mean real tree that's been cut. I have room at my slate entry for a 48" wreath. It's Z8 outdoor temps but protected from any over head weather. The one of mixed greens I've been buying the last few years just lasts forever compared to others I've bought. I finally asked at the nursery one year what was different about them and they said when they arrive they completely drench them in Wilt-Proof and let dry before displaying or filling orders. I've had them last up until March (I don't use red Christmas colors or Santa type themed decorations on it). The Wilt Proof would surely be helpful with your garlands. I've never swept a single fallen needle from my slate and it breaks my heart to even take it down St Patricks day. ...but I'll often have DH pushing for Valentines Day removal, he prefers the pear sculpture that usually hangs in its spot.

My decorating tub reads ”Fall”. It can start in September and stays up until Thankgsgiving. There’s a box for Halloween that goes up sometime in October, and a box for Thanksgiving that adds turkeys and pheasants and abundance that replaces the Halloween. So the running autumnal theme just gets little adjustments, like the (fake) jac-o-lanterns turn to face the corners.

I have to think of my ”concept” for Christmas! Using what I have, I have to come up with the colors and styles of my things to use. But I have time, and something will jump out at me.

I'm all in on Thanksgiving Decorations. As soon as Halloween was over, up went Thanksgiving. Day after Thanksgiving, Xmas tree goes up. I take it down after the epiphany. I love Little Christmas! Then it's on to Valentines, St. Pat's, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Fourth of July, and the start of football season decorations! I hate Xmas stuff in stores this early.

My Christmas decor doesn’t come out until the Thanksgiving weekend is over. Usually at least a week or two after.

Lynn, I didn’t do any Halloween decorating this year either. I barely got a fall wreath on the door and a tacky little pumpkin decoration on a shelf in the kitchen. I don’t even know where it came from.

My Christmas decor has evolved to mostly green stuff with some of the greenery flocked white and with white or natural accessories in a lot of places. The tree has no theme except the ornaments are a lot of family collected pieces, random Santas, and some we’ve had since the kids were little that they always liked.

Amy, I love your Thanksgiving spirit!

I actually dod very little fall decorating this year, let alone Halloween. The day before, or maybe it was Halloween, DH commented that I hadn’t done much. So I got a couple of jack-o-lanterns and added the plug-in figurine lights, the treat bowl, and a little Halloween thing to hang on the fall wreath at the door. Needed another holder for the chips, so I found a black hat box, perfect. And that was it. Oh, a couple of fall votive holders for the kitchen table.

I’m just not in the mood. Don’t know why, it’s nothing that’s going on externally. I just realize that I have too much stuff, and since it’s just DH and me, and he doesn’t notice until the last minute, maybe I just won’t think about it until he does.

I quite like Thanksgiving. It is only one day and it is devoted to good food and family. Period. Other than cooking, it is no fuss and no bother. And since I do not host, no need for decorating.

There is also a limit to how much and how long I will decorate for Halloween and Christmas. The HOA has restrictions on what we can have out front so exterior decorations have to be minimal. Out here in the boonies, I get no trick or treaters. My house is tiny so very little room for decorations inside as well, as it means moving and storing the everyday décor. And since it's just me and the dog, I don't go to a lot of effort. No room for a tree and I'm not at home on Christmas Day anyway.

I keep it very simple :-)) If I have any kind of a seasonal theme, it would focus on fresh flowers :-) I am never without a bouquet or two so they and candles are always my fallback seasonal décor.

IMHO, Christmas decor should only appear after Santa appears at the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Old school, I know.

I turn the Halloween pumpkins around, now they’re just Thanksgiving pumpkins.

Also have a few turkey decorations. Anytime after Thanksgiving day is fine for Christmas decorating here. ( I don’t see any problem decorating for Christmas early if it makes people happy.)

I may not decorate for christmas this year.

Kswl, that is a surprise. will you be away for much of the month?

Only a few days. Just not in the mood.

Things may feel a bit bleak today. I hope that seeing your grandchildren, hearing your choir, and other experiences will bring you to the point where you can accept and we will all move forward with grace and knowing we can still achieve positive change. ( now, do we need to camp in and try to protect ANWR? i am not a camper but will think about how to get to work.) Onward

We were in London at the beginning of October, and all of the Christmas decorations were up. Of course, Thanksgiving is not a holiday there.

The neighbors wrapped their porch railing with triple strands of white Christmas lights yesterday. They are of a Mennonite sect and don't believe in Christmas decorations, etc., so they call them "welcoming lights". When they finally took the old set of lights down in August due to remodeling the porch, I got a reprieve and there for awhile I didn't think they would replace them. I was wrong. Oh well, I don't think they appreciate my Halloween lights so we're even. Altho, I take those down the day after Halloween.

The wife is from Canada, so they've already celebrated Thanksgiving. I'll put my turkey on the porch closer to Nov. 28th. The only outside Christmas lights I put up are the ones on the door wreath.

I don’t mind seeing any kind of joyful decoration on/in someone’s house. I celebrate stuff my way and they celebrate stuff their way.

I have two large planters on my front porch. Half of the year they are full of beautiful flowering plants and the other half of the year they have evergreens covered with coloured lights. It is so pretty!

Mind you, my house can’t be seen from the road. 🤠

We had Thanksgiving a few weeks ago ( I put my turkey in the oven) and it was enjoyable as usual.

I’m looking forward to the snow and Christmas season and all the festivities that come along.

We put up our outdoor lights the weekend after Thanksgiving. The interior decor usually happens somewhere around the first week in December.

"We were in London at the beginning of October, and all of the Christmas decorations were up."

The street lights may be up but they're not switched on until November. Oxford Street is November 5th this year. The lights in my small city are not up yet and certainly not switched on. I've seen a few displays in shops but not much yet. There is one enthusiast at the end of our road who clearly loves decorating and already has an illuminated reindeer bounding across his front wall.

I do nothing for Halloween and, of course, Thanksgiving doesn't exist here. I put a wreath of real greenery on the door in the second week in December and we buy a real tree about a week before the 25th. I make an evergreen garland for the hall, hang some mistletoe up and might stick a bit of holly on the mantelpiece. I don't do any other decorations. It all comes down on 12th night. By then the snowdrops will have started flowering and I tell myself spring has arrived. I find Christmas decorations after that very depressing.

AMYLOU! I love your Thanksgiving decorations! The time you spend decorating, and the $$ you spend, are absolutely mind boggling! I hope your truckers and co-workers appreciate you, all you do, and the fun decorations! Especially those adorable turkeys!

Thanksgiving was always my favorite holiday. Nothing but spending it with family. My sister died on Thanksgiving. It has never been the same.

Driving through town tonight I was surprised to see many houses with Xmas trees up and lit. One had an antique sleigh with Santa in it. My pumpkins and mums are on my porch but I am not in the mood because my whole yard is still filled with flowering summer annuals...begonia, impatiens, coleus, and lantana. It is November 7 now after midnight and the temp is 70 and today on the trail it was 84!! Who the heck wants to do Xmas in summer heat?

Many students have come this week and said they put their Christmas trees up. I always then ask if they celebrate Thanksgiving and if so where. Consistently those who have decorated for Christmas are not at their home for Thanksgiving. Many/most decorate for others not for themselves. Why bother if no one but you will enjoy the decor? I am a festive person and celebrate the changes of season/holidays as they come all year. Not many bother. To each their own. We decide when to do the outside decorations for Christmas by the forecast. We try and get it the closest to Thanksgiving as possible but also not torture ourselves with freezing temperatures. Inside nothing happens until company leaves after Thanksgiving weekend. The outdoor lights are not turned on until Friday after Thanksgiving. I too had summer flowers blooming until the night before Halloween. Mine survive light frost due to our leaf cover. Oct 30 was our first over night into the 20s so it got them all. It was very odd having pumpkins next to my coleus and begonias.

If you want a longer Christmas season, you can keep decorations up in January.

We are the opposite, Arcy. We decorate for US, not others. Why bother? Because we love it!! We enjoy Christmas decorations and the especially the glow of the lights. Of course I hope our guests enjoy the decorations too.

Our outdoor Christmas lights were put up yesterday! But, no tree until Thanksgiving weekend. I like to enjoy Fall/Thanksgiving first and I love the fall decor-but love the Christmas lights for entertaining purposes. I am so excited for the Holidays this year!

I do find that if we are going to be having company, I decorate more. Like this year’s Halloween, we weren’t seeing anybody, nobody was coming to visit, so I didn’t do anything till the day before or of, and it was minimal.

I will do some for Thanksgiving, especially since family is asking ”what are the plans?” We are the only ones who ever host, everyone likes to come but no one wants to host.

  • last year

bpath, we host Christmas. I do have a fancier table of course, but I would decorate the same otherwise. We do fall decorations (outside), pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, etc. here. No Halloween or Thanksgiving decor, other than I do have a jack-o-lantern on Halloween. We put those decorations out early October and they stay up till the Christmas decor goes up, which is pretty sedate. Lots of greenery, candles in the windows, etc. I did get a new wreath for the front door this year so will have to jazz up the greenery on the garage door lights, post light, etc. as I usually use plain evergreens and bows. The new wreath has some berries and dried eucalyptus and pinecones. Which reminds me, I bought new ribbon and need to pay a visit to my "bow lady"!

Tina Marie I 100% agree!! I have just noticed over the years many who post here do not.

I've never been a holiday person and the only decorating I do is blowing up birthday balloons. I like gingerbread cookies but not peppermint candy canes. Easter is probably my favorite because those malted milkball eggs rock! So, no to decorating but yes to certain seasonal snacks.

I usually wait until the weekend after Thanksgiving to put up xmas decor, but this year, I am starting EARLY. I need the change. Plus, most of my decor is winter-related and not specific to xmas itself.

My fall was kinda wonky, and I didn't even have a pumpkin on the porch. I'm ready for some festivity. Amylou, can I hire you? :-)

I am kind of dreading this first holiday without my dad, and was tempted to do something ”different” but haven’t come up with anything. It will only be 5 or 6 of us, although a friend mentioned having us over for either the whole shebang or just dessert, so we may go there for dessert.

As I mentioned, we put up the outside lights right after Thanksgiving…and then we leave them up forever! I think we had them up til March last year. They just make the house look cheery and pretty.
