How about hanging the mirror or any large mirror over the couch instead of art?

That's not too bad, since the pattern on the rug is quite large scale. Do you have an ottoman or small coffee table to place as well?

Even bringing that rug over has already started to build more depth and layers that will help develop the pattern from the wallpaper more! Some pillows that are solid (can be textured so long as all one color, like the cream in the rug), a throw, and a large simple artwork will help finish the look!

I like the floor mirror as well!

Betsy, I never would have thought of it, but I think that rug actually looks great in there. It pulls together the wallpaper and the sofa. Maybe some seagrass type ottomans, and neutral/beige pillows for the sofa?

So I do have a table from in here, but I’m not married to it. I could replace it if need be I’m sending you a picture. I’m going to have to go shopping tomorrow for the solid color pillows and artwork though. Thanks so much. You guys have already helped me a lot.

Here are my suggestions:

- Art work on the wall above the sofa.

- New table lamp.

- New task lamp (can also be turned towards the piano when needed)

- Accent pillows (I show neutrals in grey/white/beige but can be in a colour you like.

- An area rug in gray & white tones, Berber style for texture.

- If you have space, a pair of braided jute ottomans.

@ Terry Clark I actually have a large Labarge mirror in my garage, but it’s gold and silver. I don’t have any gold in my house.

@Lisedv-great idea with the lights- those are from a few houses ago. I like the task lighting too.!! Definitely getting the accent pillows, probably white and beige thanks for your input. I really like it.

@betsyk2001 A curious question if I may. In your opening post you said ”…have a den that has been painted chocolate brown…” Is the wall color in this room chocolate brown? Just the color name suggests a medium tone brown & your walls look a white tone on my monitor. No one has asked about that so maybe it’s just me wondering. A thought about that Labarge mirror you have - it’s pretty but for me, it’s too glitzy for this room you’re putting together. I do like the style /themes of the art @lisedv suggests in her representation.

I think the light colored sofa against the wall could be part of the problem. You may not be able to replace the sofa, so try putting different solid colored throws on it to see if you like the room better. Good luck.

Is this the only way the furniture fits in the room? The chaise so close to the wall is awkward but maybe just the picture? Does the couch fit where the TV is?

The tweaks you've made look great! But I am not a fan of the leaner in the corner. If you don't see yourself using the stored gold-framed mirror, as is, in your house, you can always spray paint the frame. I did that to a similar large framed mirror...sprayed it a semi-gloss black. It totally changed the look of the mirror, giving it a less traditional look, and it worked much better in my space.

I didn't read all responses, so maybe others suggested this, but I would paint the wall to the left of the couch a darker color to complement the wallpaper. I think part of the problem is the wallpaper dominates and leaves the light colored wall looking unfinished. Maybe the TV wall, too, but I'd start with just the one.

Consider painting the adjacent walls a lighter color similar to the wallpaper background.

Adding some black or charcoal to the room as suggested in the lamps, rug, pillows and decor will look great. Just changing the sofa pillows will likely make a big difference.

Why b&w with a beige sofa/ IMO the wallpaper is just an odd choice just because you live in FLA does not mean palm trees everywhere inside . I think a much different accent color on the wall would have been a better choice . Change the light bulbs to LEDs then at least no more yellow lamp shades adding to the mix. I am not adding to the duplicate post but did see that rug which IMO was all the palm you needed . Now one large black, white and taupe piece of modern art large as you can afford .

@KW PNW that wasn’t an error on my part. They were chocolate brown when I bought the place and I painted them most of the house alabaster, which is my favorite white, but in this room, I went with a white white because of the background of the wallpaper.

Kcooz07 no it also fits where the main part of the couches on the short wall and the Chase parts on the lawn wall and where my piano was I had my TV but I didn’t like it. This is the way I like it best

@patriciaCalwell sorry for the misunderstanding. I did not buy that palm wallpaper because I live in Florida – I bought it because I love it. I did order black lamps so that’ll change things up a little yeah I do love the palm rug too. It works really well thank you I did. I have a large piece of art ordered and it’s actually coming Wednesday so I’ll post once I get that up.

You could always paint the frame of the mirror. A little silver or black craft paint would do it.

The white background of the wallpaper clashes with the neutral scheme in the room. I'd bring more white accents into the room to balance things out. Get throws pillows with white and neutral colors in them. The rug is great.

Have you thought about using a mirror there?

The warm gold metals would tie in your rug. If you use a mirror there, I would just hang it high enough so the back of people’s heads are not reflected in it - comfort and aesthetic thing (as well as Feng Shui thing).

You don’t have to be matchy with all your metals, etc. You can keep all the black elements in the space including the mirror in the corner. A gold frame on sofa mirror works well with your rug, and generally brings a balance to all the black in the room. And that sofa mirror would imo open up and transform the space, as well as balance the corner mirror. And look at what it does for your wallpaper.

@Kendra Thanks- I agree you’re right it probably wasn’t the right wallpaper for that room, but I just loved it so much. I do need to get some pillows and I was looking thinking about creams or beige. Someone did tell me to say with solids so that is on my to do list I got lucky with that rug was supposed to be for my lanai.

I do love the mirror and I have a big Labarge mirror that I’ve had for 20 years in my garage. I have some artwork ordered and if it doesn’t work, I’ll try painting the frame black that might work thank you.

You can use gold and silver on the frame. I think that would be fine. That is amazing that you already have a large mirror in your garage! You don't need to paint it black. It would be too much black in the room imo.

Betsyk - I was groggy when I saw your comment this morning. Now I realize you have a LaBarge mirror, and plus I now remember you from your other post - the one where you were trying to decide whether to bring your furniture from Michigan to Florida. I’m glad you are all settled in now.

@freedomplace Yes!!!- that was me trying to decide and the buyers ended up purchasing not just my furniture, but my artwork, my rugs- everything so it made it easy to move, but I had to buy everything new. I did not know the history of LaBarge (thanks) but it’s a beautiful mirror- it’s just so hard to hang. It has has to be hung by someone because it’s so heavy and I want to make sure it’s in the right spot. I have a guy coming over tomorrow to give me a price on new floors and maybe I’ll see if he’ll bring it in and at least set it on that wall so I can see it that would solve all my problems Thank you!!!

Btw-I did not realize LaBarge mirrors increase in value. I bought mine at a very high-end store about 30 years ago brand new. I guess I better not paint it. lol

@simplynatural I just noticed how you made the one while gray and I really liked it. I did put a plant in the corner that way you did it. Make a big difference. It’s hard to tell that couch looks so beige next to the black-and-white wallpaper, but it’s really a beige gray with a little black flex in it. Do you think I could just do one wall gray?

Yes, I think so. @Olychick suggested that, and I thought it was a good suggestion. As she said, maybe the TV wall too, but see what you think after the one.

@betsyk2001, I just took down the brown paneling in my LR, and now I have a gray empty space 😑... so, I say embrace the wallpaper you love, like the saying "if you are falling, dive!" So, let the palm wallpaper, patterned rug, and green plant come together, just as shown by @simplynatural, @freedomplace1, and @lisedv . Good luck!

Someone had mentioned that. It’s definitely on the list. It’s just I have a couple of bedrooms and a couple bathrooms still to paint before I can come back and repaint anything. I think it’s a good idea, though.

Love the art! And love the doggie! I suggest removing the plant in the corner-to me it is taking away from the room.

The clash you may not be in tune with is that the wallpaper is a “ crisp” black & white, and the sofa is a soft, muted gray ( or beige or whatever— more of what I call a muted or creamy neutral. So us at odds with B& W, especially because both are in large blocks.
So by all means don’t lean into more of that on the sofa— no creamy pillows on the creamy sofa. It’d be easier to treat the sofa as being somewhat “ ignored” as to its color, and as mentioned by another poster, try to add a couple of pillows that have some black & white on crisp amounts ( a black pillow with a white blocky stripe for example, or vice versa. Not a tweed or tiny print where the black & white read as gray).
The art example is great— art can mix black, white, gray, cream plus other colors and make sense.
If you do end tables or coffee table, the lamps can add more of the crisp neutrals, not more cream- gray ( unless it’s a combination) and or metallics.

Thanks- I will try some pillows that are black and white- maybe blocky stripes and see if I like them. I do love the art-I just have to get it hung now. I found that I actually like black and white and beige together. It’s weird- as a potter, I’m used to using color all the time in my studio, but I am not that in tune to what I like in my home until I see it. I am loving this room right now. It’s much better than I had imagined it. I do have two black lamps, coming one for the end table and then a task lamp which may or may not work- I can always return them. thanks for your help.
