Help with off center window in master bath.

last year

Hi all, this forum has helped me with so much of my design issues and ideas and now I need help again. A couple of years ago we redid our master bath and got rid of the big tub in there and expanded the shower. Even with the tub, the window was not centered and I never thought much about it. Now though with I am always seeing the lack of symmetry and it is bothering me. I am still trying to decide what that area should be. I do need a seat of some kind to do my nails and extra storage would be good. Until recently I had an old console table centered under the window with the ottoman in the corner but I removed the table as it was old and rickety. Any ideas on what I should do to help my eye not just go to the off balanced window? One idea I had was a taller cabinet of some kind. There is only 18" total between the side wall and the window trim. Here are some photos of the space and the whole bathroom to se what we are working with. Ceilings are 10' and window and doors are 8' so that is to keep in mind.

Maybe try a small stylish cabinet with drawers to the left of your bench in that corner.

I understand but sometimes you have to wait until everything is in place and the proper color…or finish…..something that has a pretty side view..pretty little chair…and would keep the depth same as the small side wall next to window….just something to think about..

A small stack of pretty hand towels with little flower vase on top?

  • last year

I like the bench, but I think it needs to be centered under the window. Maybe you need a smaller bench.

  • last year

With the smaller round bench ottoman thing you have you could add a plant in front of the window on the floor or you could get a longer bench of something that can handle any moisture I wouldn't really put a poster in there but if you got a good fan maybe it doesn't matter and then Center it with the window but if you had a plant in front of the window you can have the smaller one whatever you prefer

  • last year

If you take off the shutters, why not add a shear or drape that pulls to the left to fill the space?

  • last year

Okay I have tried a few of the things you all have suggested. I centered the bench under the window and then with a small table next to it.

With the bench centered it just looks crowded to me, not liking a table or cabinet there either. This last photo is of the bench pushed over but not as much as the first photo where I centered it in the space.

@Molly thank you for the suggestion of the sheers. I am not a fan of that look for my space but I appreciate all ideas. It makes me examine them.

I have ordered some samples for maybe doing a roman shade instead of the shutters.

Cubby, I like your last pic. The little table is the perfect size and placement is great but wondering if something very similar but with a tad bit more heft would help the balance even more. Just thought you might have something like that lying around to try. Just another thought to confuse the issue. I’m liking the bench more and more.

@lisalane I agree, I like the small table there but it could probably use a bit more heft. Nothing too much though. I am liking things more than I did at first and you all are really helping to keep the creative juices going. Not confusing the issue at all. I will look for a small table to take the place of that one. That one is 12" diameter and 21" tall and it is just about the right size.

Cubby for the heck of it push the bench over to the left and table on the right

  • last year

Okay @Home Interiors With Ease Julie here it is pushed the other direction.

I like the idea of a roman shade to soften things up a but.

  • last year

I like that as well! For some reason, it looks like you aren’t fighting the imbalance and it looks balanced. 🙃 The bench farther away from towels feels good. And I wouldn’t change the wood color on the base of the bench. Looks fine to me.

  • last year

Okay I’ll leave it this way for now and look for a better table and Roman shade fabric. What should I put on the wall across from the shower? Large art or a long mirror? Any suggestions for a small table?

  • last year

Darn it, that other bench I liked above just came back in stock. I’m kind of feeling like I should order it and see which one I like better. It

  • last year

Order it! 🙂. You might be happier with the color too.

  • last year

One thing about it is that it is not as deep as the current one. Maybe I am overthinking it but that may not look as nice. Current one is 20.5" deep and this one is 17.5" deep so 3 inches. I do like the style more than the one I have though.

@Molly I am really tempted to just do it.

Cubby I know it can be a hassel sending back the first one…but the second would not need the base to be painted🧐up to you.

  • last year

@Home Interiors with Ease do you or anyone think that it will be okay with it being not as deep as the current one? Any ideas on a better small table for the space?

I think the slender bench may actually be better…because it has dark legs you could look for a dark wood side table.

  • last year

Cubby, maybe get the new one before sending the other one back. Then you can compare the two and keep the one you like best. But there may be a time limit on returns…

  • last year

Alright I'm going for it. Order in today. I will keep this one until I see says next week for delivery, so there is time. Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

  • last year

I think that's a good plan since you aren't 100% on this one. I actually think the less depth may be better. If you are anything like me, you would always be wondering about the other one.

  • last year

That table question - several said it needs more heft but is the right size. Do you have a tray / plate / something that is 12” diameter to match table top? Something light weight & not breakable if it gets knocked off. My thought is adding a top might make it just right or at very least will give you a visual of whether or not a more solid piece - not see through - works. About bench width - 3” shouldn’t make a difference - 1.5” each side - just place it a tiny bit more away from the wall so front edge is out farther. I think with the extra fabric along front bottom edge instead of the wood, this one will feel the same size in the space.

@KW PNW Z8 I will see what I have to test it out.

@kcooz07 That is exactly what my hubby said when I talked to him about it.

I have always wanted to find a place to use this mirror, What do we think about it for that side wall across from the shower. It is 24" w x 47.5" long. I just love the graceful curves on the top and the simplicity of it.

Cubby, now that you’ve switched up the location of bench and table, I think the table you have looks good. Something about it being closer to the shower makes it work. When on the opposite side, I was feeling it needed more heft for balance of the arrangement. What do you think? I also think the opposite wall feels OK with nothing on it. But your mirror is beautiful - would be nice to show it off somewhere where it would be seen…

@lisalane I agree about the table but I wasn't sure. I do still need to replace it since it does have a spot that needs a small table. I hear you on the mirror too. I just think it is so pretty and have no walls in this house to put it on. So nothing on that small wall?

  • last year

The mirror - very pretty. Do you own this mirror yet? If not, I wouldn’t buy it for this space. All your metal is silver tone & I think it would distract from your existing black framed mirrors. I personally couldn’t leave that wall bare. You said it’s 4’ right? I’d find a wow! of a large forest or floral themed wrapped canvas art to hang there. Large like 30“ x30” or even 36” x 36”. Tape it out to see what’s best. Of course that means removing the 3 small pieces hung vertically next to window. But I don’t think you’ll miss them.

  • last year

@KW PNW Z8 I don't own this mirror but have always wanted to. I hear you on the metal color being different, personally that doesn't bother me too much but to some it is a real no-no. AT one point before doing anything to this space I had a large piece of art on that wall. I'm gonna have to think about what feels right because I do like the three small pieces next to the window as it seems to help with the balance which was really bothering me. Maybe I wait to figure it out until I decide on changing the shutters and how that looks.

  • last year

cubby - agree on waiting before spending the $$ on anything for the wall. I think mixing metals is fine & usually works. My thought on the gold mirror frame in this space is that everything that is metal already is silver. I don’t see any gold to tie into the one piece of gold. That’s why I think it’d be a distraction instead of the nice add you want. My reason for the lush garden image art is that’s what I’d like to look at while standing in a shower. 😊

  • last year

If you have a bedroom wall or a hallway you can put that mirror in

Maybe I can use the taller version of it where that old round mirror is in this photo. I was going to do something else there anyway. Can always tone down the gold if need be with Rub'n'buff.

That looks like a nice spot for the mirror

I like that spot too. Some people don’t want to see the full view of themselves while they shower.😆 I like the art suggestion.

Well all I am back to the drawing board. I got the other bench and although I liked the style much better but it just didn't look right to me. It just looked too small and the proportions of the bench itself felt all off especially for that space. It does look okay at the end of the bed in my guest bedroom though fabric is a little yellower than I like but I think we can make it work in there so I am keeping it. That room will be another dilemma in the future I am sure.

And because I am just so-so on the other bench I am back to the idea of a dressing table. These pictures are my using my old ugly things to approximate what it might look like both in the configuration that Julie has suggested against the side wall and on the window wall. Neither is exactly the size etc but gives us a better idea than my photoshop mock ups.

I like the table against the wall. Under the window, to my eye, looks a bit cluttered. I think the table along the wall and those frames next to the window takes care of the asymmetry . The entire thing looks very nice and sleek

Thanks @printesa I appreciate you chiming in. I value all opinions it truly helps me.

Not sure if it matters but keep in mind that the shutters will most likely be replaced with a fabric blind of some kind. I think I keep hoping that under the window will work since there are so many more very nice pieces that fit there than I am finding for the smaller wall. Either way we will make it work and it will be fine I'm sure.

I really like the table against the wall too. It seems made for the spot size wise. I'm not sure I'd use a dressing table though so I'd be interested in placing a cabinet there for storage - either drawers or shelves underneath to hold all those extra bath supplies. And, I might want it in a black tone to tie in with mirror frames over the sink counters. And, I'd put the rug back down that's in one of the pics. Then rehang the round mirror with the very interesting frame.

Hi Cubby…yes it really is the best use of the space and honestly looks really nice.

@KW PNW Z8 thank you for looking I will keep it in mind on color and usefulness of space.

Cubby looks really nice at the left wall. Looks more open that way! Very pretty!

I think the consensus is on the small wall so now I need to find a small console or desk that is open on the bottom.
