I saw the blue tile sample in your photo and that's a good idea. I would match the blue in the existing tile though. Not introduce another shade of blue. It will cast a beautiful blue sheen onto the marble.

Paint the switchplate covers to match or get brushed chrome, black or something.

@tracefloyd thanks : that backsplash above the stove and rhe perimeter is’what we’re getting rid of . dated and not our style. i want some kind of subway tile for the perimeter which I'm not quire sure what color works , and then something different for over the stove . 😊

taking a cue from the warmer light from the pendant shades I'd lean into a splash like these with warm tones either patterned or solid. I seriously would require a counterpoint to all the blue and I dont think youd regret something like these.

The crown above your cabinets should be the same color as the cabinets, so you don't get that strong horizontal stripe effect. The crown can change back to white were it is only over the wall.

@chispa thanks for suggestion. we struggled with that decision but had some feedback from a fre whi suggested keeping it white like rhe ofhet trim we have . it is a bit brighter white , though. i can see what you’re saying

You’ve made some good calls already. The quartzite is beautiful, the cabinets are lovely, everything is in a cool color space. You don’t have great lighting, so a tile with a bit of gloss to it will bounce around the light you do have and brighten the space considerably. To keep all eyes on your counters and cabinets, consider a field tile and specialty tile in the same glaze, different shapes. This is Fireclay Tile in Moonshine. You don’t have to choose subway for the firld tile, they have other options, but you seem to be moving in that direction. For your specialty tile I’m showing Ogee Drop, but again, they have other options for you.

Good advice to have the crown match the cabinets. And I like the fireclay suggestion above

@eam44 thank you ! so you think that moonshine could work work.. not too mich blue. i like the idea of same glaze but . same color , too ? woild you do the whole area above the stove? or use a pencil border? thanks again.

It is such a subtle, elegant color, I really do think it would be beautiful. In this case as you are changing shapes your tile setter would be grateful for a pencil border, and it might fit better with your traditional style. I love the single color look, but you’re building your backsplash. With the specialty tile you could mix in whites, other blues, or maybe Nickel or French Linen as a call out to your stone. It is super easy to get carried away though!

You might consider a tile with some texture like a crackle or a glazed brick.

The cabinets and counter tops are cool tones that work well with the contemporary drawer pulls. Your backsplash choices have a more modern feel as well. Unfortunately, the style island pendants don’t work with your new look. They also appear to give off a warm yellowish cast.

Pretty color on the cabinets!

Several tile sites have visualizers so you can get a bit of a test run of how the tile will work in your space. I'm having a hard time telling the tone of your counters because on my monitor, some pictures look warmer than others. So these are just a guess on color tone, but here are a couple from Tilebar.com

Are you wanting different tile behind your range?

I like the 3x12 Tehema blue. Very Coastal and very pretty. Busy decorative tiles are not Coastal to me neither is the white subway- and does the white makes the counters look dull?

Have all one tile, no need to break up the backsplash with more than one tile...too busy.

Luckily, Tilebar.com lets you buy 5 samples for $5. Take your time with the backsplash since too white, a wrong blue or an overly busy pattern can take away from the excellent choices you’ve already made.

Whites, ivories and creams are hard, so it may take a while to find the exact right color and finish. So far, it looks fantastic.

@tracefloyd so nothing different over the stove ? i still think that all of it being blue might be too much.. definitely coastal, but maybe too much blue . i was feeling rhe area ocet the stove is a good size, that it needs something different.

I see what you're saying about blue. I think a medium color tile will make the countertops read as white and really pop.

Speaking of which, the counters are lit by yellow lighting in the photos so hard to get a handle on the color.

Can you match the gray veining in the marble? Fog gray is Coastal. I see your gray sample but it is way too dark. Matte finish would be nice.

Also look at color cast, whatever tile will cast its color on the marble. And a light gray is neutral.

To me a different pattern over the stove is Tuscan, not Coastal. Coastal is not fancified.

I'd go with a patterned tile. Your countertop reads as solid, so you don't have to worry about the patterns competing.

I found this description of Mont Blanc so lots to work with:

To achieve a contemporary look, I don’t suggest a different tile over stove and when narrowing down tiles, keep in mind the coastal feel you want. It’s important to consider the effect of lighting, stools, in addition to tiles and the decision will be easier.

Tiles: They were Zellige, but can’t find. They come in lots of oshapes, sizes and finishes. May want to read up/visit a tile store to know if they are right for you.

Extend the Mont Blanc up the walls. It will give you a beautiful clean look and make the back splash much easier to clean — no grout lines.
