Looks to me like a dwarf myrtle, Myrtus communis 'Compacta'. Typically grown outdoors but not winter hardy in colder zones so I guess can be overwintered as a houseplant.

But, I really have no idea how these small-leaved cultivars vary. I have tried the allegedly hardier 'Tarentina' and 'Andy Van' a couple times, both cultivars, in a sheltered spots outside, that dog just doesn't hunt this far north. I do have a very vague memory of seeing one in Norfolk, Virginia at some point, perhaps at the Botanical Garden. However the fact the NCSU arboretum doesn't list any outside ones suggest a hardiness or adoptability issue. It's certainly the kind of plant that would have been on JC's radar.

20+ years ago the Smithsonian in DC had huge planters of a small leaved cultivar outdoors in the summer. A good plant for that use.

Watch this with close attention to the undersides of the leaves when inside because they are very prone to spider mites in dry environments.
