Favorite pillow for sleeping?

last year

Ive had a Biosense memory foam pillow with a sort of arch cut into one end for ages. Its great for side sleepers who have shoulder pain. 🙋‍♀️ Its time to replace it since its gotten hard. Thought maybe I should consider something else. I dont like down or down alternative because my head sinks too far into it and I cant breathe.

Do you have a favorite pillow for sleeping (not throwing)?

I am not terribly picky about pillows. I recently replaced mine with Target's Threshold line, medium and firm. I like both. They offer an extra firm, too. There were several "cooling" and gel pillows on the shelves, too.

Down only, soft to medium firmness. I sleep on my back and I dislike overly firm pillows that push my chin into my chest.

For most of my life I was happy with down pillows, and in recent years occasionally a contoured pillow with neck support. But now my neck problems have worsened, plus I have scalp sensitivity left over from bouts with shingles. I wish I could report that I found the perfect pillow, but I rotate through several that are just okay. The one constant on my bed is a little travel pillow by My Pillow. For me, it's perfect when I lie on my left side.

Oh my, alisande, you sent that jerk money? He deserves a daily flaming bag of poo on his front porch.

^^ nyuk! .. ....I like a thin pillow, about 4" thick and soft. Pillows that resemble giant spongy marshmallows are a pain in the neck.

I love my Casper pillow. We have the ”original” model.

He is worse than a jerk, Elmer, but long before he showed his true colors I bought three travel pillows (one for my daughter, another for me to use watching TV downstairs). I can't say I regret them.

I like a thin, malleable down pillow.

I'm in the minority, but I like the Tony Little Micropedic Pillow. It's an artificial version of a buckwheat pillow. They seem hard when you try it the first time, but it molds around your head and holds it comfortably. I'm a side and stomach sleeper. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for someone who sleeps on their back. I started using them years ago when I was suffering from some neck pain.

I guess the best way to find the right pillow is to try different ones. There sure are a lot of choices. Thanks.

I love my Luxome LAYR pillow. They come with customizable layers so you can choose your comfort level. I have changed my layers a couple of times. It took me 2 or 3 nights to get mine just right the first time.

I'm in the buckwheat pillow camp too - have been for at least 30 years. Works for me whether I'm sleeping my side or back. As Fun2BHere commented, it molds around the head and neck. It can comfortably fill the larger gap between shoulder & head when sleeping on the side but can provide less bulk when on the back. Mine is the Sobakawa Traditional.

Over the years I have tried every pillow, some quite expensive but they never worked for me. I use a pillow to prop up my laptop while it is on my lap there is a cooling plate underneath the laptop so it doesn't overheat. I bought a $6 striped pillow from Walmart for that purpose. I actually bought 2 so decided to try one in bed. After spending a fortune in pillows this $6 pillow gave me the best nights sleep I had in a long time. I am a left side sleeper so I like that I could fold the pillow under my neck. I have a flat pillow under this one because during towards the morning I sleep on my back. I think the pillow is called Blue Whale Striped Pillow.

dedtired I share your struggle for pillow perfection. For years I used a dual system with a down pillow (not super filled) on the bottom and a rather flat, firm pillow (probably some kind of poly) on top. It provided the firm support for my head so I could breathe (side sleeper) but a bit of cush from the down. I use 100% cotton pillow covers on all pillows and then a silk pillowcase. It was not a perfect system by any means, my head still got hot and I am a constant pillow flipper looking for 'the cool spot'.

In one of the pillow threads of the past, someone here swore by a shredded foam pillow that can be adjusted by taking some fill out as needed. Although I was not thrilled with the idea of foam, I decided to try it. I've been sleeping on one (and DH, too) for a year. It's better than I expected but not the holy grail. I removed some of the pieces after the first night as it was just too plump for me. DH has been using it a full volume. It has a thick, quilted cotton cover that comes with the pillow, then my pillow cover, then my pillow case so I feel somewhat removed from the foam. I know, I know - humor me.

My DS and DDIL love their Coop pillows - it must be like the one DLM just mentioned. You can adjust it for your own personal preference.

My pillows are due for replacement and I dread the selection process. I may try the Biosense Dedtired wrote about - both of my rotator cuffs are torn and my neck is wonky too. I just finished PT and my Cervical injections are scheduled for next week.

I’m in the foam group. But I don’t want too much pillow. I’m a side sleeper and don’t want my hand(s) under my pillow. I really liked the toddler, yes, toddler pillow I bought in 2015. It was 19x10x3”, 3 thin layers of foam, 2 flat and 1 with a curve for my neck, each with its own fabric cover and an adjustable outer cover to hold them all. Some nights I used all three, other nights only 1 or 2. When I wore it out, I got another. When that wore out, the Milliard company no longer offered them. But I found other companies selling toddler pillows and continue to love that type of pillow. I have 3 right now. DH is a convert as well.

I agree with Fun2Bhere about Tony Little Micropedic Pillows. Over the years I had been suffering with a stiff neck when I'd wake up. I had tried so many different brands and types of pillows. I heard about the Tony Little pillows and boy what a difference! I haven't had a stiff neck in years and they are so much better than any other pillow I've ever used, plus they are cooling. They are a bit pricy, but well worth it to me.

Mine is a latex pillow that I LOVE-but just googled and they don't sell that exact brand anymore that I can find? I should have bought another one at the time!

After much searching the Coop pillow has worked the best for me. I think I may have originally heard about it here. I have a tempermental neck as a result of a car accident and have a difficult time finding a pillow that works well for me. The Coop pillow is made from memory foam. You can adjust the amount of memory foam in the pillow; it comes with extra memory foam. Rather than adding extra foam I originally removed some, over time I have added a bit back into the pillow. I have had it for at three years, it is in great condition. I will buy another when it needs to be replaced.

Our son used my pillow at our desert house, he loved it too and bought two when he returned home.

A lot of Four Season hotels have pillow menus IME. I believe a trip to one would qualify as research. Several days, so you can try each one. You're welcome.

May have to extend my upcoming trip for research purposes. Makes it tax deductible, right?

Austin has a Four Seasons. I've not been there in well over 10 years but it was not memorable. You may need to try a 4S resort!

I love my down pillow from Boll & Branch. I like that my head sinks in just enough.

DH has one of those buckwheat pillows. To me it's as hard as a rock. I really have no idea how he sleeps on that but he loves it.

I'm a back sleeper, so my choice of down pillow might not be ideal for you. I bought my latest one from Brooklinen. Next I might try Boll & Branch as I've been happier with their sheets than Brooklinen.

I am appreciating the slide sleeper pillow suggestions for my husband. He's a side and stomach sleeper and I think it's time for his pillows to be replaced.

As flat as possible……when we were at motels years ago I folded a coupla of towels to use as a pillow. Regular pillows hurt my neck no matter how I layed.

My mother took carpet foam and cut it into 3/4" chunks, put it in a fake fur pillow cover....and sold them at church garage sales, donating the money to her church. She kept getting asked when she'd have more made. We thought that was odd. How many fake fur pillows can a person own...they were sleeping on them. Hence a pillow with removeable stuffing.

I just ordered two Hotel Suite White Goose Down pillows. The size is "jumbo" 20" X 28". Over sized. But if you don't like down... @pricklypearcactus or @jsk might like these....Link
