Help with ideas for correcting shower fixture placement!!

last modified: last year

I don't know quite what our contractor was thinking when he installed the plumbing fixtures for our shower. We provided the kit shown (marble shower), and they installed it like this (green shower).

EDIT: Not all pictures/text made it to the original post. We can fix the shower head to be as intended, I think they just misplaced the part and used something else.

The dilemma is with the hand shower. This particular hand shower has a mount that is goes directly over the valve. I admit I did not realize that but I would have expected my contractor to advise me of this since we had the kit before the plumbing was roughed in. He said this is how they "always do it" but I think if he would have actually looked at the kit he would have figured this out before. So yes, we are stuck with the location for the rough in unless we want to tear up the tile, which we don't.

I am looking for some of your ideas on what options may work for this configuration. I don't know if I can make a bar work somehow? Or maybe find a coordinating hand shower that where I can mount the handheld part higher and the attach hose to the valve below.

For reference, the kit I purchased was: Delta Modern Champagne Bronze 2-handle Single Function 10-in Square Shower Faucet Valve Included Model #342701-CZ

What's wrong? Is the square fixture supposed to be on the ceiling? I have to say I have never seen such a strange handheld spray. Or is it the tile that is recessed on the wall? Do you have a photo of the box showing how the kit should be installed? Plumbing was done first before fixtures were connected. So you can't change anything now unless you want to take the wall/tile down.

Alice in Wonderland..."this is getting curiouser and curiouser"

Get a longer shower arm and have it installed. The rough in for the handheld is in an unusual place but if you didn’t exactly spell it out it’s kind of in you- plumbers always go rogue

Your contractor's odd choices makes you wonder what else he does wrong that you can't see, but he thinks is fine, because this is how "they always do it".

You learned your lesson for your next remodel ... leave nothing for the contractor to decide on his own. They can't read your mind and sometimes the ideas in their minds are really weird! Specify everything in a face to face meeting and then confirm in writing.

You can probably fit a Jaclo grab/handheld bar and get a longer hose.

I like the Jaclo bar with articulating joint, which lets you angle the handheld away from the wall, allowing for actual use. It comes in several "gold" tones and with square ends ... mine has the round ends.

Hallett is right now add a longer shower arm and live and learn you ned to be specific about everything when dealing with any contractor . I do hate "this is how we always do it" since usually its wrong.

I like Chispa's idea for the handheld. You can change out the water supply you have for a water supply elbow and then add a slide bar with the handheld. There are lots of manufacturers.

Delta has some that would match.

Yes, you can purchase a handheld that has two parts that attach to the wall - one is the valve and the other is a holder. You could place the valve where your current valve is located and the holder wherever you wish. Here is one from Brizo as an example. I'm sure there are other brands that make them like this too.

Purchase it first and play around with placement to see how the hose loops, flops, lays well. Then write down instructions with measurements, draw a sketch of those same placement instructions, and also draw or tape them in the shower.

File under live and learn. Always provide exact placement instructions. (I think the marble image is jacked up too - controls are too high, hand held is too high.) I bet your plumber either does lower end bathrooms that don't have separate hand helds and didn't know what to do, or just wanted to make it less work and easier for himself.

Bottom line - freaking beautiful tile and fixture finishes. I hope you'll post a pic of your entire bathroom!
