Size and Shape Art

I have a wall that is 8 feet tall and 50 inches wide.

Can I hang a square piece of art, or does it need to be portrait shape?

What size would you recommend?

I don’t know if it makes a difference but it will be canvas.

Also, there is nothing else on the wall. I can’t put any furniture there because I will run right into it when I turn left coming out of the kitchen.
