Do you have deer?

last year

I almost forgot my occasionally-annual thank you to the member who suggested storing each strand of holiday lights in a one-gallon ziplok. It’s the best!

New storage dilemma: Santa came early via DS, with what I’ve always wanted: light-up deer for the lawn. I’m in love. But looking forward to after the holidays, how do I store this family of three? If you have holiday on the lawn, like deer, or a nativity, or Santa’s workshop, what keeps them safe the rest of the year?

b, I have one lighted grapevine buck I use for my wagon scene — he folds up and goes back in the box for storage, and the box is kept in the attic. We also store a trio of lighted presents, a small artificial tree, a snowman, and a santa with him. All except the tree go back in their boxes. The tree has lights and rustic decor — it goes in a tree bag with decor still on it.

Does yours disassemble? Do you have an attic, basement, or storage building?

One of our real deer visited the other night, he used to come with his mom and twin sister. He’s eating a carrot here:

At my old house, My herd lived in a corner of our basement. The 9 ft tall one had to be beheaded at the end of each season to fit. We have extremely limited storage space at our current house, so no lit up deer. We have lots of real deer though.

Jilly, I love the grqpevine ones, too!

These guys disassemble (body, head, four legs, and antlers for the buck) but because of their material and the little integrated pegs that hold them together, and how tricky it was pulling them, apart to assemble, I think it will be hard to put them back in exactly the same way.

They will go in the basement, no carrots.

We have deer that roam the neighborhood, although I haven’t seen them in a year or two. There was a ”gang” of four or five young bucks for a couple of years, we’d all report sightings on our neighborhood group, but ”the boys” have gone their separate ways now.

I really have a hard time assembling Grapevine Buck every year — I might do what you’re going to do … just keep him together and maybe loosely drape him in plastic or something.

That’s such a sweet gift from your son!

You could leave them in the yard and just decorate for the season. Hearts for Valentines, add bunnies for Easter, red-white- blue for the summer, and pumpkins for fall.

    He’s a beauty!

I’m so jealous of your snow!

  • last year

He looks right at home in the snow! Hmm, if we got a REAL snow, not a paltry coupla inches, I wonder how he would hold up. Or how I would get him indoors! I didn’t think of that. Little stakes hold him in the ground, the ground has frozen now. One year I didn’t get the lights off the bushes before a big snow, they were a sorry sight afterwards.

Mine disassembles and gets stored in its original box. Head, ears, antlers, legs come off the torso. It can be like a jig saw puzzle sometimes, but after a few choice words here and there it eventually fits. The most difficult is putting the head back inside the torso. You have to twist and turn just right.

Here he is inside last year after I decided to take outside decorations down a little early. I sat him in the library until I felt like fussing with putting him away. Liked him there so much I took a photo and used it as my Christmas card this year!

ETA: The box is small enough to handle easily, gets put in the cellar on a table.

We had some of the wire white deer. I say HAD. They were stored in the shed out back, and the mice chewed through the wires. That was the end of those..... I think they are lovely!

Schoolhouse, My hubs has a lot of decoys, (duck, geese, etc) but no full size deer. Wonder if I gave him one of those for Christmas, he'd let me decorate it?? LOL

I do have real deer. During the rut season late October & early November they scampered back and forth across the driveway at 3 AM. Set the cameras off and drove the dog nuts.

  • last year

Schoolhouse, that is a great card!

Everything I put in the basement is encased, in a clear Sterilite or a clear bag (ziplok, or recycling bag, or contractor bag, or the zipper ones that linens come in). Lest there be mice. Which, if I didn’t encase, there would be.

I have a family of deer. Four of them orginally. We brought them home cut off all the wires and painted them brown. They live just off the corner of my house in the garden just before the woods begin. A few years ago a large branch fell off one of the oaks and took out the adult female.

I also have a what once was was a light up moose in the front garden. He makes a fabulous trellis for my vines.

Storage issues are why the orginal owners gave them up. I prefer the way they hint at being in my garden to full on statues. As for the Christmas nativity, we have a crawl space in the garage they sit up in. Hard plastic is easier to stack and store than wire framed characters. Sorry ,this post is no help to your storage issues.

We had horses back in TX, but had a barn to store them. They lost their appeal when the lights started going out. It was a nightmare (see what I did there?).

We have a running family joke about all the people who live in single-wide mobile homes who bought those 10 foot skeletons for Halloween. WTH are you gonna store that??

pudgeder, I bought him from Pro-Bass online in the Fall of 2022 as an early Xmas gift to myself. It was on sale, but with shipping it still ended up being kind of expensive. Well, I couldn't figure out how to put it together that Christmas so didn't put him out. Then last year I finally did it. I use tent stakes and zip ties to anchor him to the ground. This year I have him looking INTO the window from OUTside. lol.

One day I walked into a Marcs grocery store and what do I see? Two of these same decoys standing up on the very top of two shelves. I asked the clerk if they were for sale (mostly to see what price they were charging). She said, "No, they are just for show". They also have a big horse. All three are still in the store.

We have 2 deer. Ours are a rattan type material and are all one piece, so nothing to put together. They are stored in our attic or basement. Not sure as that is my husbands department 😊.

    I wish!

I gave up looking a few years now, but I've always wanted the vintage blow mold Santa and Reindeer that people put on their rooftops. I think you can find them but they are rare and VERY expensive if in good shape-I should look again.

I have always just thought it would look so cute if I had the Santa and Reindeer on my roof-which would look perfect on our low pitch hip roof on our house along with the matching vintage blow mold Santa head to hang on my courtyard wall and the snowman at my front door on porch-of course with outdoor lights (colored or white-can't make up my mind which LOL).

Nothing else-just those three items, plus the lights would look so classic but kind of chic for the vintage Christmasy look. I have had the Santa head and the snowman for years and used did them a couple of years-but just need that darn Santa and Reindeer.

  • last year

I store ours in the original boxes.

We had a molded Santa when I was little. Dad put it on the garage roof. Hmmm, all the things we did not keep. Who knew those would be valuable?

  • last year

There is someone locally who has the blow mold deer on their roof! Pretty cool.

We just get the real deer. We enjoy their visits though we have to deal with their 💩.

Had a beautiful buck the other day looking for the ladies, and then a piebald doe a couple weeks back. I’m not sure if this is the same one or an offspring.

OllieJane, Etsy has lots! Not sure if the link will work but here:https://www.etsy.com/search/vintage?q=blow+mold+Santa+and+Reindeer&ref=search_bar&vin

Reunited! Our other DS came the day before Christmas and set up the doe and fawn! They look so nice together.

When I went out last night to turn the lights off, my little flashlight picked up the trail of Santa’s glitter fairy dust along the path around the side of the house. So magical!

  • last year

I don’t have any deer lawn decor, but I have nine 6’ tall angels on my lawn, and still have three angels in boxes, I bought ten of them this season. didn’t have enough time to put the last three out before Christmas. I will store them in sheds above the cross beams.

  • last year

I have two w/o lights that make get beautiful vine skirts each summer.

  • last year

    Thanks schoolhouse! I will look!

  • last year

Oh, summer, a host of angels!

  • last year

My poor deers! Something chewed the wire of the fawn and he now has an early lights-out curfew. I haven’t looked closely, but I’m guessing that trying to find matching lights and rewiring little Bambi isn’t for the likes of me. Or is it? Is it doable?

  • last year

I bet your son could do it. There's probably a DIY youtube somewhere. Are the deer electric or battery operated?

  • last year
    last modified: last year

Electric. The wire stretched above the ground a few inches on the way to the outlet.

Hey, it turns out plenty of people have tried to do it, and some have succeeded. One good tip: use clothespins to hold the wires in place while you try out the configuration.

Another tip I wish I’d known about: when setting them up outside, feed the wire through something. The article suggested PVC pipe but I’m thinking pool noodles or foam pipe insulation will be easier.
