Playroom Design Help Needed

last year

Mind the mess. We have pulled all the toys out to start purging to make room for new Christmas toys and sorted them into categories. We have a lot of lego sets, board games, dart guns, cars, books, and magnatiles.

This is the love hate relationship I have with Pinterest, and why I need to learn how to use a home design program to visually see how pieces will look. I brought in a brown box at the standard 24” depth to see where cabinets would look best because I think that would help with toys being out of sight.

This room is mostly utilized by my son who is 4.5. Sometimes when my son doesn’t want to nap, we’ll do quiet time and let him go in the playroom and play but he has to stay there until quiet time is over. I was envisioning the couch being there for that purpose. We were going for the design similar to what you see in the link, but I just worry after seeing what the addition of the IKEA Trofast did to the space, I can only imagine what adding a couch and coffee table will do. My husband refuses to get any kid furniture like the nugget couch. He likes the idea of a loveseat or a beanbag chair because my son has a sensory processing disorder and retained primitive reflexes and needs the movement to help him regulate.

When I measured, I factored in on Walls 3 and 4 having the closet and room door all the way open.

We also have a 53x53 walk in closet that I thought I could utilize for storage as well to preserve floor space, but then I worried what if we sell the house and new owners wished we kept it a walk in bedroom closet with ample hanging space and not drawers and shelving.

I’d like to hire someone to help me create a 3D model sketch up of this room to help me create the space.

The playroom in the Simply Every link is so cute & you could totally recreate it in your kiddo's room! What if you did built in shelves around the window with an attached, cushioned bench at the bottom - the narrow shelves would be great for books or action figures. I think shelves in the closet would be great toy storage, & if a buyer didn't care for the extra shelving it could easily be removed. A loveseat would make room to snuggle but not take up as much floor space as a sofa. The other thing your kiddo may enjoy is an indoor swing, my niece has sensory issues from autism & she loves it!!!

The Simply Every Playroom is very cute. Here's how the items would fit in your room. Note that I show the smaller version of the Lack coffee table. I would replace the horizontal blinds with roman shades, Ikea also has some but I don't know if the size fits your window but they are available in various sizes elsewhere. Similar rugs are available on Amazon and Wayfair.

The first order of operations is to mount that TV to the wall. My friend who is a pediatrician asks families about how their TV is mounted even before asking about whether anyone in the house smokes. Tipping TVs injure and kill so many kids a year!

I worried a desk wouldn’t work in front of my window bc it sits so low. Does that not matter?

You need seating, tables and art on the walls. You can do a large magnetic board and hang up your kids' art.

I have a really hard time understanding the need for a whole room devoted to toys. I had 3 kids we let them play in the LR during the day and at supper time the toys were put away and the room became the adult space . If I was to have a toy room it would need toys to have a home behind doors, a place to sit a table and chairs for art and probavly a TV wall mounted Our kids had their toys in a really cool bench my Dad made with 3 roll out boxes under the bench and the bench upholstered for extra seating in our LR. Any toys that did not fit were in the bedrooms . I love kids art and a good wall hung area for display is a great idea , ours was in the hall going to the bedrooms. Our kids also loved a chalk board so they had those in the bedroom

I can't relate to a closed room for children with a TV in it. Creative play spaces are KILLED by TV watching. Go for the swing, a tent, maybe a puppet stage sooo many better ideas than mind sucking TV. Love the idea of an over stuffed comfy love seat for reading!!

I appreciate those who gave me suggestions. As for why a room dedicated to toys is needed, we’re a family of 3 and live in a 4 bedroom house that was supposed to be 3 bedrooms with a loft. Builders didn’t comply with the floor plan and gave a HEAVY discount as the result. I also don’t like my son bringing his toys all around the house. I like defined spaces. I also would like a space that belongs just to him that if as he gets older he doesn’t want to be in the family room downstairs, he can go upstairs in his playroom and hang out. Of course we will rename the space to a game room/second living room.

Having a SPD requires him to have the ability to jump and crash into things. He plays more than he watches tv. Teacher mom. I know the damages of screen time.

    Considering you're eliminating the

unit for toy storage in the closet, here is another floor plan you can consider.

I think it's fine if you want to use the closet for storage, but know that unless you have a very clean and organized kid, he probably won't. Not sure why you don't like the storage unit you have - that's probably going to be used much more than closet storage (and is a lot less expensive).

I really don't think the pinterest playrooms are at all realistic. And for a 4.5 year old I wouldn't be putting in a couch and coffee table. I wouldn't put anything in the middle of the room if your son needs room to move around.

I would look at a big joe duo bean bag chair, and a pod hammock chair. I would consider getting an art table, and one of those small trampolines. I would skip the desk. What about a bookshelf? The IKEA kallax shelves fit the 3 sprouts cubes perfectly and are a great option for both toys & books.

Havenly or one of those online interior design companies can help you plan and design your playroom if you really want to have it picture perfect.

I wanted a hammock but my husband for some odd reason refuses to mount anything to the ceiling. He’s like these DR Horton cookie cutter house ceilings will probably collapse. He’s a thief of joy. I had a bean bag but it lost its shape and it was like $40 every time I had to fill it up with beans.
