My suggestion is to replace the console for a longer one because the one you have is not long enough for the size of your TV. then you can style the console by adding a lamp since you don't seem to have any in the room for multilevel lighting other than the ceiling fan. I would also place another lamp next to the chair on the right and bring the chair forward more into the conversation area. Here's the idea...

As lisedv suggests, the console is too small for the space. Before you buy anything, try using the console behind the sofa. It doesn't look right there, anyway, and replace it with the now tv console. For this idea:

Now try the dining room plant in the corner and see how that looks.

I think your husband's idea for a plant is great. If it has enough volume it will take care of the empty wall space. And, it doesn't matter if the bottom is not visible because of the sofa. In fact, that helps create a more layered look to your room.

If it still feels empty after that, try adding two small piece of artwork hung vertically one above the other to the right of the TV possibly half way between the TV and the corner.

Thanks. As stated we are not replacing the furniture- just not an option. Also, the height of the tv is extremely comfortable for us (and it is our house!) thanks for the picture though. The two verticals look nice.

Beverly, I love the staggered items you placed above the blue chair. Sarah, I too was going to suggest lowering the TV, but you've scared me away from that suggestion. I do love how minimal yet inviting your space is.

But for us, this part works and plenty of people have posted some really lovely in inspiration photos to help fill the space without totally breaking the budget ♥️ lots of realistic ideas about switching thi ngs ar ound instead of just replacing which are really appreciated!

Would it be in the budget to get a different chair to replace the blue one? That would help fill that corner-the blue chair seems almost like a dining room chair. What about a floor lamp to the left of the TV-what do you use for lighting in the room? Or, a large plant in the corner (if you can do real) and lamps on the console?

You said you wanted to warm up the room? I agree that it seems cold and lifeless.

Number one: if the walls are gray or blue, repaint a warm color. Some hue of warm white, not bright white.

Number two: add warm colors in art, window dressings, rugs, pillows, throws, furniture. Red, rust, gold, orange, tan, brown, green. A tall (at least 4’ tall, 5’-6’ is better) green plant in the corner would be a start.

There’s no reason why you should replace any of your furniture if it’s working for you! Which, obviously it is!

I like the idea of some wall shelving on either side, possibly moving some of the objects you have placed around the room onto the shelves. It depends on what kind of things you tend to keep on display around your home. You can rotate some of the contents of the shelves, seasonally for example at Christmas time, or if you have family photos you would like to display, etc. Books… 3-D sculptures… It’s hard to know based on this photograph, as to what your tastes are. Shelving would warm up the room more than flat artwork alone.

Floating shelves are an inexpensive option and fairly easy to install plus being very flexible. Lots of ideas out there.

I love art, so would definitely want to add pieces in this room. I have our TV on a vintage sideboard and art all around it.

Art is very subjective, so I’d take the time to search out what appeals to you. You could use cut out paper or cardboard hung with painters tape to see what sizes and arrangements you’d like.

These are just an examples — not suggesting you do the sizes, subjects, arrangements exactly. Just showing how adding art really elevates the room and makes it more personal. Art can be a great way to bring in color and verve, but if you prefer more muted and neutral colors, that can certainly look great, too.

I’d possibly want something on the wall right of the curtains, too.

What is behind this room? Can you show the fourth side?

ETA: I think lamps would add a lot to this room, too.

If everything stays at least lower the TV over the cabinet. Otherwise you keep spending money for objects you don't need.

TVs get positioned in the same manner art gets positioned over cabinets and seating. A few inches above so there's no need to place anything on top of the cabinet.

Next year one of the big box stores will offer an 80" TV for $300 someone will decide they cannot live without a large screen to view sporting events and the change will happen.

I do think you media cabinet needs to be wider…could you purchase another so they can be pushed together to really make an impact on that wall?

OP has stated at least twice that buying another cabinet is not an option. Neither is lowering the TV. 😉

I agree that Art is very personal, and should be something that you enjoy looking at… My suggestion of the botanicals was more from looking at your room, which is somewhat mono chrome to begin with…. and picking something that would fit with that. But in general, I’m a big fan of putting things on your walls that are personally meaningful, and that you enjoy in terms of art choices.

And I also like the idea of two on the left, and one on the right, as being more interesting and less symmetrical.

liasch, I didn’t see your post before mine (board has been wonky for me) …. I really like those botanicals you posted, and the arrangement idea! Really fits the serene and cozy (and balanced) feel of the room.

I’m not very good at mock-ups; my examples came out with a bit larger pieces than I intended. Had I seen your post, I probably would’ve just said, “l agree with liasch” and saved room on this thread. :D

Wider cabinet..add stacked art on right side above the chair..add a large floor lamp on the left…beautiful!

Did not suggest to replace any furniture..that was what I heard from the OP….not that a additional piece or pieces was a no…even if another of the same cabinet can not be added..the addition of stacked art above chair and floor lamp will really impact the space. lovely room keep it simple .
