need help deciding wall and trim color for den.

I’m trying to decide on neutral lighter color to repaint from gold walls in foyer, LR, and Den. Keeping Hampshire gray (green) in kitchen, DR and BR. Was thinking white dove for the trim but can’t decide on wall color. Room does not get much light so afraid of undertones.

Are you wanting to go white, or do you want more tooth than that?

SW Steamed Milk doesn't have yellow or grey undertones, and will still have some contrast with White Dove for the trim.

There is also SW Creamy and SW Alabaster, but I would get samples of those to see how they work in the light in your space. Also, Alabaster may be pretty similar to White Dove. All three of these would look pretty with Hampshire grey, but always check how they work in your light with your flooring/etc.

Thank you. Been looking at Creamy. Will check out Steamed Milk. !!

Thank you!! You are right about the trim. I just thought it was a good trim color but makes total sense to decide that last!!!! Will check out these other colors. Thanks!!!

Going with Manchester tan in foyer, LR and Den with white dove trim. Here’s hoping!!

Should I paint the wainscoting wall color maybe with a different sheen or trim color?

  • last year

Guessing the dining room is the room with the wainscoting.

It really depends on what look you want. You can use the same color as the walls, same color as the trim or add an accent color. You can also choose to flip flop trim and wall color in one room.

I love this example of trim and wall color being flip flopped.

    Wainscoting choices:

Same as walls - I would use a stronger sheen on the wainscoting:

    Trim color

    1 shade darker than walls

    accent color

Wall color on wainscoting - accent color on walls

Find the white you love...let's say White Dove. Paint the entire room in it. Ceilings in flat finish, walls in eggshell and trim in semi gloss, It won't be boring because the different finishes will make the White Dove applications so lovely.

Many have suggested that. Will it look good with the dark brown sofa??

How much natural daylight do you get. I know the current trend is to paint everything white and white is beautiful when there is enough light to reflect. When there is not great natural lighting it can fall flat. Looking at what you have now, I think you are better off using the Manchester Tan and Dove White Trim. It will be much lighter than what you have, but enough color to stand on it's own without gleaming sunlight pouring onto the walls.

Too many pictures on the internet are photoshopped or shot with all kinds of studio lighting that doesn't represent the light in most homes.

If you have large south facing windows

What happens when you are envisioning this

And your results are more like these . . .

Exactly!!! We only have one window facing east and half door window so not much natural light. Only thing about Manchester Tan is it looks much like the contractors beige we had when we moved in 30 years ago. But it will stand the test of time!!!

Manchester tan also tends look pale yellow in my den!?🥴. I’m so confused. I do like some color just not yellow or pink tones from Manchester tan or pale oak respectively. Thoughts??

Edgecomb Gray. Not gray, but less yellow than Manchester Tan and not pink like Pale Oak.

Can you describe in words (not paint names) the color you picture in your head you want this room to be? Warm? Cool? I know you want lighter and less gold.

I’m thinking warn as I have Hampshire gray in the kitchen Dining and bedroom. So something to go with that but updated from the gold. This color will also go in the foyer and LR and upstairs and upstairs hallway. So it will be a lot hence why I’m struggling to get it right. I did not want to jump in the all white or gray bandwagon but just a pretty neutral color. I really have no idea! In person Decorators have said all Write Dove or Manchester Tan.which to me appears yellow in afternoon and evening. I do have the dark brown sofa and recently changed frames and accessories from large heavy brown to gold metal (picture, mirror, lamps etc. so hoping that will still look good with new color. If I have to get new sofa I will but I do have 7 grandkids😊. Thank you all for your advice and counsel!!

Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get to your vision.

When you shared that Manchester Tan was too yellow and Pale Oak to pink I suggested Edgecomb gray.

Revere Pewter is another option that could possibly work for you and has been one of the top selling neutrals for more than a decade. It has a bit more green than Edgecomb Gray. Rodeo is both lighter and a bit grayer than Revere Pewter.

November rain is a neutral green, but is more noticably green.

I don't think you have enough light to pull off White Dove walls and not have it go flat.

I have several family members who have used Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray and SW Accessible Beige in the past 2 years. All very flexible neutrals.

Thanks again. I’m ordering all the samples stick on to test and will see what looks best! It is a process!! Thanks again!!!

Remember to look at your samples against the colors that will stay and not the gold wall color that is going away

I would throw into the mix Benjamin Moore Navajo white. It’s a classic warm white. Not the Sherwin Williams version which is butter yellow…

  • last year

So what about BM Natural cream. A shade darker than Navajo white and lighter or almost the same as edgecomb gray (another one I like). I know I’ve gone full circle originally wanting more color and settling on lighter neutral but it is pretty and still has some contrast with the trim. What think?? Natural cream or edge one gray. Note this color will also be in foyer and stairwells and long halls. .

By quarts of them both and roll BIG. Areas of the wall, not tiny postage stamp sized area. Make sure it’s next to trim in good light.
