E daylilies 2025

last modified: 10 months ago

E daylilies are on the agenda today. Just a few Es for me .

Brad, most of mine are yellow😳

Easter Pastel is fairly new to the garden. An older reverse bitone that has done well so far.

Easter Egg got miss placed by me. It took two seasons to bloom and my so called id system broke down.

El Desperado got relocated….seems to like the new spot. It had languished for a few years.

Entwined in the vine had its third season here and has done well. Increased bud count last season.

Eenie weenie, a great tiny daylily. The only photo I took of it last season. If you look close you can see it is at the edge of my new walkway. I have two divisions of this one.

Sherry - Entwined in the Vine and El Desperado always did well in my Nashville garden. I left El Desperado behind, but I still have Entwined in the Vine.

Here's my last photo of El Desperado:

Sherry and Debra, Entwined in the Vine is very pretty. And I do have a few yellows; even a yellow seedling I probably will keep!!!

Easter Pastel is my favorite of these. We have taken a liking to reverse bicolors.

I like the ddep color and watermark of Edward Abbey.

Elderberry Wine is a good grower.

I wish Greatful Red were a little taller. It's a large flower on a fairly short scape.

I like the eye on Exotic Starfish.

    Extreme Tangerine

    That's all of my E's.

Don't have any E's, but every time I see your Eenie Weenie Sherry I remember mine fondly. Such a cute little tabletop daylily. Good picture of El Desperado too......Debra: Always liked your Empire of Desire . Good one to take with you........Brad: I like your Emperor Butterfly. The pattern and color are pretty..........Nan: Exotic Starfish has an eye catching pattern to it.....Maryl

    Some of my Es:

No bells or whistles-just a fantastic bloomer and grower: Enter Laughing

Emerald Bay-very slow increaser for me

Explosion in the Paint Factory-still not sure I like these

Electric Ballet was a new addition

Ellie’s Late Show-poor Ellie does bloom late and long after others are gone. She just sits alone among sun burned and dry leaves

These next three grow in the large bed that was totally decimated by the red bugs-not one scape survived the onslaught to bloom. These are some favorites with previous photos

Elegant Candy-an oldie that ”flash blooms” for several days and then is gone

    El Desperado

And of course, one of my original suitcase plants-Entwined in the Vine

Nancy, I really like both Edward Abby and Elderberry Wine. Great color!

Kate, Ellie's Late Show is very pretty. Too bad she doesn't have company like my VTs. Too bad you had those horrible bugs. Did you find a way to get rid of them or what they are?

Yes, Brad, I have known for years the red bugs are lopidea. And yes, an entomologist at a state university has been helping me with plans to control them this season. It is pretty intensive and I hope I can do it!! Although I have posted many photos on here of the dratted bugs, you really cannot imagine the complete devastation they can cause. Between the bugs and the deer, growing daylilies can become quite challenging!!!

I looked up the bugs. Yuk.

Mantis - You have some pretty Hansons and Emmerichs there. I think Elizabeth Peacock is my favorite of those! Such beautiful colors on that one. If you ever have any to sell or trade, let me know.

Kay - The Enter Laughing clump looks fantastic!

Nan - Where is your Empire of Dawn and Dusk? I accidentally left mine behind, but Mike Derrow is sending it as one of four replacement bonuses on an order I placed on some of his newer intros.

Empire of Dawn and Dusk on rebloom

For those of you who don't grow any Derrows in your garden, you should. Mike is so generous with fans and bonuses. And most of them grew great in my Nashville garden. I'm getting Diva Don Don, Diviner's Desire and Part of the Game this Spring, and he's sending Empire of Dawn and Dusk, Lunar Empire, Betwixt and Between and Steven Scott Derrow as bonuses. Yay! I brought Star Lord, Lonesome Jaguar, and Rosie With a Ring with me.

Debra, as I recall, you had a couple of newer Derrow purples that you weren't excited about. Did you leave them? It will be interesting to hear about your new arrivals.

Mantis - I gave the toothy Derrow purples to a daylily friend. I may eventually get a piece of one of them - Hawking Radiation - back since that one had such good plant habits. I do have some seeds from Hawking. The colors of those two didn't impress me much in their first season, but that might improve in subsequent years after they had a chance to settle in.

Mantis: You have some eyecatching E's. My favorite is Existential Avitar. The color looks on the medium mauve side which I favor. Good stats just as you said.....Maryl

Mantis, I usually am not a fan of the color of Existential Avatar, but I like its look. I almost almost bought it at a club auction but decided to pass in our ongoing effort to downsize.

Debra, we still grow Empire of Dawn and Dusk and plan to have another intro out of it next year. I just didn't get a new photo of it this past season.

A little late to the party. I love all of the ENTWINED IN THE VINE photos. EDWARD ABBEY and ELIZABETH PEACOCK look great and I think they are being added to my collection late summer from a friend. EXOTIC STARFISH looks fantastic.

Here are my additions to this letter:

EXPLOSION IN THE PAINT FACTORY: First year for me. The verdict is still out. It is different.

ELECTRIC MIST: I liked it, but I don't think it liked my climate. Extremely slow increaser. So it left the garden this past summer.

EYE ON AMERICA: Nice plant, but another one that did not like Zone 5. It also left the garden.

    EXOTIC STARFISH

EVENING EYESGADOW: This is an attractive bloom. Bud count is moderate.

    EXTRA BOLD: Bud Bennett intro

EMMA TOMLINSON MCHUGH: This is a wonderful daylily. Blooms well for me.

EVERYBODY WANTS SOME: So do I. I took this photo at Cottage Gardens. One day I will have it in my garden.

    That is all from me.

David - Nice photo of Exotic Starfish! Your photo of Everyone Wants Some makes me want it!

Mantis - I'm considering adding Electric Ladyland as a hybridizing plant. You say it was not as good in heat and drought. Did it have faded color and few buds for you last year?

    Debra

sherrygirl zone5 N il thanked shive

EL was smaller in bloom size last year. I don't remember it as dramatically different. Many things were washed out from the heat. But I don't remember clearly. David, Emma looks nice, but I do see it is a Smith intro, and they tend to be short and often a bit tender here. Will look forward to future reports.

A few cultivars last year did better than previously. Most did not. It amazes me how one year's performance can vary from another's. On the other hand, some plants are very consistent performers. Elizabeth Peacock has been in that category. Knock on wood.

MANTIS: I've grown ETM for many years and it does well. It's height is variable though.
