Quartz Backsplash around window

Help! Doing quartz backsplash above electric range that will go wall to window with a shelf and then just 4” high on other walls. Contractor used counter slad 3CM (1 1/4 inch) for backsplash. Problem is he installed window trim first. Backsplash is jutting out from window trim (see photo) and stove wall slab depth will also extend beyond trim. Luckily i was home so asked them to hold off on install since i think it will not look good. What to do? I could have them do something with window trim which currently is 1”, or do some type of beveled edge so slab dies into trim. Fabricator can not mill down. Thoughts?

Yeah, 1 1/4” is thick. Ask him to uninstall the window trim and trim it out again after the entire backsplash has been completed. To me it looks like the window trim needs to be at least 3/4” deeper. The thing is, your wall is not going to be perfectly flat either, so he’s going to have to do what needs to be done to make the backsplash stone look flush, and that might make a difference too.

That does not look correct. Typically, extra material would be added behind the window trim in order to make its projection farther out than the slab. Regardless of whether a slab is used or if tile is installed, the window trim should be thicker (or look thicker by having something added behind it) than the backsplash material.

IMO never quartz behind any cooking appliance but maybe induction is that range induction ot just electric?

We have quartz installed behind the gas version of your range . I can put three pots on the back burners, turn the heat up to high, and still put my hand behind them on the quartz without feeling any significant warmth. I would not be concerned about this. I know there have been anecdotal stories about problems, but that has not been my experience in either kitchen of our two homes.

I would like to know if the contractor was able to flush the backsplash with the window trim. Our backsplash quartz will be 2 cm and we will try to find window trim of same thickness. Our countertop installer said the window trim is installed before they do the measurement.

"Fabricator can not mill down."

False. Fabricator doesn't want to mill down. I'd push a 4" splash through a table saw with a diamond blade. Done in 20 miutes. Take the appliance splash to a fabricator with a CNC machine. Milling may release internal stress in the slab which may manifest as warping.

We are doing our kitchen renovation. Our old backsplash was removed and the broken walls were replaced with new drywall. The new drywall on the left side below the window protrudes out a bit by about 1/8-1/4”, which will make the quartz backsplash protrude too! The picture shows what is behind the drywall after we took out the new piece.

The thickness of the window trim and quartz backsplash will both be ¾”. Can I use a 3/8” thick drywall on the left side and the normal ½” drywall for the right side so that the quartz backsplash does not protrude on the left side? The countertop installer said they do not plane the quartz.

Of course.
