Hosta ID. Give me a guess.

Not too far away from my home is a house with a row of hosta. Well, I couldn't help but notice it. Every time I went by I wondered what hosta it was. It was driving me crazy! So wouldn't you know it, one day someone was outside at that house so I went up to them and asked them about the hosta. Unfortunately, the owners were away and their parents were there to check on things so I couldn't get much information.

So I mustered up the courage later on and left a message in their mailbox. (Aren't I a crazy hosta girl!) "I really love your hosta and wondered what the name of it is. One day if you are splitting them, I would love to purchase a piece from you."

She said yes! She was going to split in the spring! Hurray!

This hosta gets a lot of sun. I am hoping its Coast to Coast which I don't have. What do you think?

I was wondering why the hosta in the first picture isn't a hedge like I remember. I figured it out. The pictures above are from the end of September 2023. In 2024 they moved some to make a whole row of them!

Golden Waffles was introduced in 1976 so it could have been put in years ago by the people who live there now or the previous owner(s). So many new introductions are made every year that often older ones are not often offered for sale.

I would certainly expect to see rippled edges if they were mature Coast to Coast. C to C was introduced in 2014. I do not believe they are C to C.

GW would have white flowers.

I am not stuck on them being GW but it seems reasonable. Others may chime in with alternate ideas.

Do you recall roughly the size of the leaves? Maybe Golden Waffles?

I thought the leaves were pretty big. Hard to say. I also thought I had better pictures but can't find them.

Golden Waffles seems like a good guess. I see the similarity. Only thing is that I have never seen Golden Waffles for sale in the general garden centers here. I am assuming that the hosta would have been purchased locally. I don't have it so Golden Waffles didn't come to mind. Are you saying you don't think they could be Coast to Coast?

These hosta are located on the west side of the house so they get sun all afternoon. That was also something that made me notice them. I wanted to see how well they did in that location.

I will gladly take better pictures and try to find out the name of the hosta---for me and for them.

The house is not that old. It was a new development built around 2016. Whatever was there was torn down. I cropped a couple of pictures of the house from google maps.

There were no hosta in the front yard until 2020. This picture is taken in October.

Here is a photo from May 2024.

I do hope I get to meet the people who live there. I am very curious about the identify of these hosta and will need closeup photos of the leaves and size of the hosta in order to try to get an ID. Hosta flowers would help too.

I see the photos are pretty small so I took another clipping but it is a bit blurry.

Look like Sum and Substance to me? But they turn yellow later on. Does S&S do that? The first hosta looks like it is a bit damaged. I thought it may be from the salt spread on the sidewalks by the city. The owner said she thought it was from the dogs in the neighborhood peeing on it!

I don’t think it’s C to C either. I think the leaves would be more wavy and have a better pointed tip. The flower would be lavender and white. As far as Sum and Substance, I don’t think it’s that either. S&S leaves are not that upright and crinkled. My one S&S is over 4 1/2 feet. Leaves are smoother. This plant is years old now.

Check out Aspen Gold, Vivian Grapes 1986. “Van Wade regards it as having some of the most puckering between veins of any hosta he knows. It is known for its bloom and long lasting color.” check it out.

Thanks Debra. I'm thinking that since they just planted them in 2020, it has to be something newer? I have never seen Aspen Gold sold around here. Maybe all the sun it's getting is making it look unfamiliar? And how did they get to buy so many at one time?

Perhaps they started with a few and then were split once those became bigger?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is possible Debra. Maybe they brought them from a previous home, or from their parent's home etc. I am dying to text them and ask, but it will have to wait!
