Seeking Advice for Dated Living Room

Would love any advice about what to do with this room. We’ll most likely paint the brick fireplace, but any other insight or ideas are welcome. Thank you!

You need to post pics of the entire space all 4 walls here in comments DO NOT start another post or we will lose this one . We also need more info as to what it is you for the space . If the question is so vague you will end up with a 100 ideas and no closer to an answer/ The LR in your idea book is the total opposite of what I see of your space so maybe strat there and tell us what else you like in the pic besides the drapes .

I see brown everywhere is thta a fave for color ? Do oyu love all the wood trim?

This is not how we designed the space, this is what we get- the brown has got to go. I’m mostly curious about people’s ideas about a fireplace that goes all the way up to a sloped ceiling.

The thing is the brick fireplace might look great if you did not have all the other brown in the room overwhelming it. I do not know what your personal style is, but if it was my house I would change out all the wood bannisters for steel cables. You do not have to change the railings if you do not want to but it would really lighten the room and make the brick fireplace look less heavy.

The fireplace is beautiful. It’s not the problem in the home. It’s the dated banisters sand railings, carpet etc.

This photo is from Zillow, so nothing anyone says will be offensive 😁

The Zillow listing is not showing the accurate color of the wood. Nor is it showing the accurate color of the brick. The brick and woodwork can totally be worked with. However, it is clear that you do not want it - so this is a gross waste of time.

The fireplace brick is one of the best parts of the room. Great that the TV area and all the brown furniture is not yours. the beige walls and brown trim are where i would focus first.

The wood is rich and attractive. The brick is nice. Everything else is beige and bland. Replace the carpet, at a minimum. Add some color. Blue looks good with woods. You could keep the beige walls and carpet and add some blue furniture and have a beachy vibe.

Classic Color Duo: Blue and White

With new furniture and better paint, the room will look great and all that natural wood and brick will look great, rather than dated.

Endless possibilities for the wood and brick. I just put the above few together with AI and I have a ton more. I could post pics all night.

OP doesn’t have the wood ceiling (at least I don’t see one in the pics posted) but you can get the general idea, and it all applies. The scribble on the room pic is me covering the existing furniture, etc.

These AI images are really helpful, I appreciate your time and input so much! Clearing out the furniture is great too, thank you!

Beverly, we haven’t fully decided yet, most likely white

Just a friendly note to say that the above are not AI images but renderings created by a human designer :)

To give any suggestions I need more information such as what style to you plan on furnishing the room? keeping all the wood? or do you intend on painting all or parts of it?

Thanks, Freedomplace1 mentioned their images were generated by AI, so I was referring to those 😄

Love love love this room. I would update all the furniture, lamps, window treatments and decor. I would not change any of that beautiful warm wood and brick. Just get a decorator and go shopping.

I agree that the fireplace isn't the problem. The railings really date the space. They are what builders did in the '80's and '90's to build railings as cheaply as possible. There are a lot of them, so it would be expensive to replace all of them, but IMO that would be the biggest improvement besides replacing the carpeting and painting.

Not sure I would describe stained cheap wood railings, stained paint grade trim, and stained slab doors as beautiful wood. Although replacing railings would be first choice, even painting them would be an improvement. I would figure out my wall and trim colors and paint first. Decide on rugs and furniture placement and then see how you feel about brick fireplace wall. Agree it’s a lot and not a feature that must be kept as is rspecially because of the odd placement in the room.

I’d wait until you move in/complete your intended changes and then make the fireplace decision. Not sure why the slant in ceiling will affect choices, but I think a more substantial mantle, the right accessories and how the space on the left is decorated/balanced are key.

The wood trim, stair rails cabinetry make everything look heavy. Remove the wood headers over windows and slider. Replace window coverings with lighter solar shades that allow privacy, but also a view to the outside. New flooring (or carpet), furnishings that are not wood trimmed, side tables in glass / metals. Upholstered furnishings in lighter tones, bolder prints that complement wood tones without matching or blending. New pendants in kitchen would also lighten up the look. Replacing the all the railings is expensive and may be better to wait for a complete renovation if that is what you desire. THEN, look at the fireplace brick and see if it still does not meet your aesthetic.

Replace ceiling fan fixture as well.
