Tree + zeroscape

I've taken on a project. I'm in san diego and was tired of the grass. It was high maintenance and we had gophers make them themselves at home. My plan is to even out the dirt, lay down gopher wire and weed barrier, and fill with mulch, pebbles, and rocks. My question is regarding this magnolia tree. It's been there since we moved in 5 years ago. I can't decide if i should have it removed. I don't mind watering once in a while , since I will keep some other low maintenance plants along the perimeter. Just not sure how well it would do. Also am open to any design ideas. Thanks!
