Do you LOVE the image? or is it merely a placeholder?

If it is a feature in your space, leave it black.

I like the image very much. But it's the frame that's bothering me.

My vote is to leave it black. White wouldn’t enhance the strong image. The white frame on the art to the right in LR is good for that image. Art should be framed & matted to enhance it.

If I leave it black, should I replace it with a thinner black frame?

no, it is framed in porportion to the mat. as said above, the image is framed to compliment the image, not your decor.

I would try flipping the take lighter art from LR and hang on that small wall and put the picasso on the LR wall..worth a try before changing it up.

That’s a great idea from Home Interiors to simply swap the art around! I often do that with other things in my home - it really changes the look & perspective of the item. The black frame should be less ’dominant’ hung in a spot with other things to look at.

Unfortunately I can't switch them since thr LR artwork is 32" wide and the wall measures 34". The artwork is proportionately too big for that wall.

If that specific swap won’t work think about other art in your home that could be swapped out. The idea of swapping is so much better that original thought of changing the black frame!

I think for that wall it looks great..makes a statement…the size works nicely..live with it for a few days…Go big or go home

I would try to find something else you love that makes a statement where you have it now, in BLACK frame to highlight the space... the white is too washed out for either space.

If the frame is white it's going to blend into the wall. The black makes it pop. It's perfect the way it is.

So… I have a lot of art on many walls in my home. The problem you have here is not just the relationship of the frame to the artwork but the relationship of the two pieces of art to each other and the flow between them in the space. The high contrast image and framing in the Picasso doesn’t flow very well visually with the very light framed piece. And they’re in the same view plane in the photographs although that may not really be that noticeable when you’re actually in the space.

So the question is a little bit more complicated than does the frame suit the art. I would find another location for the Picasso. I don’t think it works in the space with the light framed piece. Or I would move the light framed piece.

You could put a different frame on the Picasso and still have it work. It might not work quite as well as the black frame but it could be more compatible with the entire environment.

If you do a Google photo search online for this image, which I did, you can see there are other framing options. If you did not pay a lot for that framing I would consider reframing it and see how you like it. Frames are relatively inexpensive.

I do not think a balck frame is a bad look for thta piece you could I gess go metal and relly thin but I usually frame art to go with the art not any other way.

Agree, it would be nice to see photos of the rest of the space. I also make frame decisions to go with the art, and not in any other way. But I do arrange the art, subsequently, for compatibility in the space. In this case, I think there are several options as to what could work with this Picasso. I don’t think white is out of the question. However, just moving the piece to a better location and playing with the arrangement of the art in the space might be an easier solution.

The OP commented initially that the Picasso art piece felt heavy… It’s a colour rich, dense piece, and it may still feel that way even with a lighter frame.

There are so many more options than black or white. I would take the piece to a local independent framing shop and look around to see if there is a better frame color/design.

I like to add a fillet inside of the frame for additional interest. Some of the frames I re-did recently.
