If you're thinking about ordering from Palatine do it tonight because tariffs go into effect tomorrow.

Typically, tariffs are applied when goods enter the country, so if the goods are being shipped in March, they could be subject to the tariffs in effect at that time.

  • last year

Perhaps you should reach out to Palatine then and tell them they are wrong.

  • last year

I ordered the day their site opened. I was hoping to get my roses shipped before tariff went into effect. They are to ship Feb. 25 - so I thought the tariff would be added as an additional cost since they havent shipped yet. Is this correct or if I already purchased them.......am I safe from the tariff?

    Let the fun begin. Diane

@alameda/zone 8/East Texas Tariff costs get passed to the consumer . They are charged when the goods are imported, not purchased. The provider of the goods don’t just eat the costs themselves, it gets added to the cost of the imports. So if you spent $200 at Palatine on roses, you can now expect to pay an additional $50 at the time of shipping to cover those tariffs. Anybody who thinks this is good for the American people are misinformed.

  • last year

SD Shine, With all due respect, and playing devil’s advocate, in our case with roses—assuming Palatine is still selling—you are getting less expensive roses within the U.S., which also supports our economy.

  • last year

Thats what I was afraid of. Seems to me in fairness to US customers - the goods purchased before the tariff went into effect should be grandfathered and not charged. How is this helping the American consumer? Its not punishing Canada as they pass costs along to us. I bought quite a few roses.......so extra expense for me and others. But....I want the roses and Palatine wont be shipping anymore so will just haved to eat it and enjoy my roses.

I think this likely gets into a bit of a political debate and we may want to avoid that here, but yes @elenazone6 there are definitely cheaper options here so why do Americans buy from Palatine in the first place? Another example is crude oil, we get more than half from Canada. Now that will be taxes an extra 10%, more come mid-February. Is Canada going to eat that cost? Yeah, some of it, but the majority will result in increased prices for the rest of is, unless we increase our oil imports from the Saudis who will know we’re up poop creek and take full advantage of it. Where is the benefit to the American economy there? Wood products? The price of furniture will shoot up. Cars and machinery? Same. I agree that, for the good of our economy, we should buy American-made as much as possible but there are *many* things that we don’t make ourselves and to start doing that requires significant time and money and the import of parts/materials because we literally cannot produce everything ourselves. /rant.

  • last year

@alameda/zone 8/East Texas it punishes both the American customer AND Canada as the cost to us will increase and, as a result, the sales/export will decrease. Canada absolutely cannot afford to eat those costs. They are 1/10th our size and are yet in our top 3 trading partners.

Not just crude , but hydro also. Didn't wanna miss anything! LOL! I think we buy from peloton because they have roses that We're not formally available here. We now have many that are Offering Similar.

Why do people buy from Palatine?

For the same reason people are STILL buying roses from all the vendors proven to have stolen money by never providing roses they were paid for in 2023--i.e. a rare variety you can't get anywhere else in the United States.

At least Palatine is doing business honestly, and I don't blame them a bit for adding the 25% tariff directly onto the price in order to stay in business.

@sautesmom Sacramento Yep I agree, this is why I was *really* hoping April & Ashley via Frances would step into the game and save the day with cool new varieties. Some were great but sold out too quickly and the rest were a bit uninspiring, but at least their customer service is fantastic. Hopefully they’re able to obtain growing rights to more in-demand roses next year ie some of Palatine’s varieties.

In addition to the extra $50 I'm probably gonna be charged on my $200 order, I'm wondering if Palatine is going to delay shipments? For example, T. announced tariffs on Colombia one day, and the next day changed his mind because they caved. According to their latest newsletter, they're planning on starting shipments in early February, which would include me.

  • last year

Interesting! -He almost imposed Tariffs on Columbia, South America, which woukd have greatly impacted Aoril & Ashley imports from their Milagro farm in Columbia, South America. I am having am A&A O’Hara rose bouquet today was shipped from Milagro Farm in Columbia! It’s on it’s way to US & NY-my home. WOW!

Can you imagine how tariffs could effect rose bouquet prices & rose bushes, if inacted, many shipped from South America and foreign countries!

Guess I’ll have to pay $25 tariff in my order from Palatine! And tge money goes to “US treasure.” That’s an extraordinary high tax!

Congressmen trying to pass US bill to stop tariffs. Hope it goes through.

Guess I will cancel any of my ideas to . buy from Rose Explosion-would it be a 10% tariff on China good? !

I think a lot of people will end up bitterly regretting the way they voted in November.

    Brexit has failed miserably...

  • last year

Someone on Facebook reported they got an email from Palatine with a new invoice that priced in the tariffs.

Ben, also posted and deleted same info, did not want to be a bad news messenger.

PS. This is a mechanism, clarified by Palatine:

As the pop-up on our website has specified, if tariffs are needed to be paid when the order crosses the border, the customer will be responsible for covering that cost. This includes any roses purchased for shipping this season.

    If needed??

Lust for what I don't have is difficult for me to fight, even still, in my old age. I've paid the price many a time, both in dollars and in spiritual credibility. Oh, how frail my greed makes me be. What I lusted after if acquired, has turned into a 'nothing burger,' every time. I am the last person on earth to give advice on how to resist lust and greed, and covetousness, too. I will say, go easy so that you won't get burned too much, nor make a spectacle out of yourself as I have done so many times.

Since tariffs start Tuesday, I see Canada, Mexico, & China retaliating. Hope all tariffs ends soon. Sounds futile.

Well, Palatine beautiful roses will be shipping soon anyway! So much to look forward to!

My 3 roses coming from Palatine…

I got quite a few since its their last year and they are such good roses......so my tariff is going to be pricey. But......my property taxes surprisingly went down quite a bit........alot more than what my tariff will be, so as far as I am concerned.......things worked out and I feel better. [Not that I wouldnt have been ok otherwise - the beauty of the roses that are coming will more than compensate!] I still dont see why goods purchased before the tariff couldnt be grandfathered.....

Kitty, I got Poseidon - that is a gorgeous photo! And you will love Crazy Love! Colors are wonderful!! Sheila, that utube was hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

Beautiful, rosecanadian - thank you for posting this. My lovely much loved daughter in law is from Canada and I am now a Canadian-by-marriage. I have wonderful friends in Mexico. I hope we can all stand together.

Moses; I agree with peachtree that you have given the BEST gardening advice EVER. I can definitely relate to your sentiments.

Thank you, too, rosecanadian, for posting Kennedy's words. I can't put into words how horrified I am at what is now happening in the USA. These bozos are like classic Supervillians, wanting to take over the world. When is Batman or Spiderman going to arrive to save the day???

I am NOT being sarcastic; I really wish some superhero/ine could just save us, but it won't happen. We have to stand together to defeat this carp.

As far as I've read, tariff's on Chinese goods are going into effect today, and they are retaliating. Roses imported from China will have a 10% tariff. Diane

    From Palatine FB:

    To our U.S. Customers,

Since the beginning of our mail-order journey, you have been with us every step of the way. Your support means the world to us, and we are truly grateful.

As many of you know, there has been ongoing uncertainty regarding the potential implementation of tariffs on imported roses. Since this announcement in November, we have been transparent that any applicable tariffs will be the responsibility of the customer.

What Does This Mean for Your Order?

If tariffs go into effect at the time of shipping, applicable tariffs will be applied to the total cost of the roses in your order (excluding shipping, as it is considered a service). This charge will appear as a separate shipping line and will be processed automatically.

We will only apply this charge if we are required to pay tariffs during the export process. If tariffs are applied, you will see this charge one week or less before your order ships.

    Order Cancellation Policy

If you wish to cancel your order for any reason, you may do so until March 15, 2025. Please note that a 10% cancellation fee will apply.

After March 15, 2025—our pre-order deadline—cancellations will be non-refundable. This policy has been in place for several years and remains unchanged. You can review the full details in our FAQ section.

    Why Can't We Ship Earlier?

Unlike non-living products, our roses require the right timing and conditions for planting. If they arrive too early, you may not be able to plant them right away, which can compromise their quality. Additionally, shipping them too soon increases the risk of damage in transit.
To ensure the health of our roses, our processing schedule is carefully structured so that each order is handled with care. During peak weeks, we operate at full capacity, meaning we cannot accelerate shipments beyond our planned schedule.

We understand that these circumstances may bring questions, and we are here to help. If you need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued trust and support—we are honored to bring our roses to your gardens.
