Blind Shock $$$$$$$$

last modified: 5 months ago

Just received our first window coverings quote. 39 roller blinds: C$75,247.83 (US$52,673.48) including tx. from Costco. Pick me off the floor. Or are we out to lunch?

Several windows are rather large, but not that outrageous.

Over $1000 per window? Of course window treatments for 39 windows will add up, but that's insane. For roller blinds? No way.

Wow, are they motorized? Does it include installation? That does seem high. If you're up for measuring yourself, look at blinds.com. You could probably buy there and hire a handyman to hang them for less than your quote. Window treatments are shockingly expensive but your quote still seems off to me.

Just looked up our roller shade quote from 3 years ago. Hunter Douglas with fabric cassette headrail. Our largest motorized window was $842. Our largest non motorized window (patio door slider) was $889.

The smallest motorized was $592 (still not a small window).

Your quote seems excessive unless you have multiple shades in one.

2022 - I paid around $35K for Hunter Douglas Duettes shades, with bottom-up/top-down feature, motorized and automated. Included installation. The low voltage wiring was not included in that quote as that was done during construction. The quote was for 29 blinds, 3 Vertiglide shades for sliders (each 12' W x 10' H), and power/wifi modules.

I got quotes from 2 Hunter Douglas dealers in my area and the one with "budget" in their name was around $8K more expensive for the same quote, so shop around as individual dealers have flexibility in their pricing.

Multiple shades in three windows, but those are part of the 39 total count.

Ten motorized. Three of those are via low voltage; two with batteries. Installation included, except for low voltage wiring.

Waiting for our quote from Blinds.ca Not sure if it's related to the US Blinds.com.

We were guesstimating in the low $30s. Bad enough!

At this rate, we may just window tint the common area rooms and keep the lights low in the evening.

@worthy FWIW the motorized shades in my living space are almost my favorite feature of my house. We paid for the hub so we have them programmed to raise/lower. They are all battery powered, and batteries have maintained charge for about a year before needing recharging.

We went less expensive in other rooms - namely bedrooms & basement, where we used a different brand of blind and used cellular shades instead, which saved a bundle (didn't think motorization or scheduling the raising/lowering of bedroom blinds would be necessary or even wanted). So, none of those are motorized, and most of them for a single standard-sized window were around $300 apiece (virtually all of them are blackout). Maybe there are concessions you can make (do ALL of them need motorization?) that can alleviate some of the pain.

I did go back and see if I could get motorized top down/bottom up shade for the window over our bathtub (we used window film on that one), and it came back around $1200. So...depending on what you're choosing it can get pricey.

@worthy on our LR windows, we used 3 separate shades. Our blind salesman told us that the larger shades don't work as well with automation (they're too heavy/the motor wears out - so he said), which is why our slider shade is not automated. We have 3 windows with a total width of 10' (two 3' and one 4'), each having their own blinds. Maybe you could price out separating the blinds based on the stiles and see if that makes a difference?

Three larger windows on the main floor have three blinds each. Upstairs, no motorization. However, we're wiring a central stack of three windows for motors. (No batteries.)

Received another quote this afternoon for approx. C$30K. The quality is not as good. As mentioned above, we're tempted to tint the first floor and spend blind $$ on a wall of evergreens to shield us from neighbours.

Further competitive quotes received, including tax and installation

Blinds to Go C$32,164 lower quality

    NYC Blinds C$37, 401

    One more to go.

Now understanding how this home near us finished 15 years ago still lingers with newspapers in lieu of shades.

The windows do not need the same treatments. Concentrate on the front of the house first; from the curb, try for a matching look.

Large front windows would be happy with draperies which you could draw at night.

Check out amazon.com for privacy treatments that you can install yourself with out tools.

    https://www.amazon.com/no-drill-blinds/s?k=no+drill+blinds

Etsy.com has a plethora of window treatments. Half-price draperies is another source.

And, there may be a few windows that can go without any treatment. When it is daylight, no one can see in anyway, unless the nose is pressed up against the glass and hands are cupped around eyes.

Look at your photo post...windows look black? Because "strong reflective effect caused by the difference in light levels between the inside and outside of their home, essentially acting like a mirror and reflecting the bright outdoor light back at you, making the window appear dark."

At last, going with Sunglow roller blinds. Large windows motorized, smaller ones mechanical. C$27K vs. Hunter Douglas at C$34K, all plus 13% sales tax. Just have to remember to do nothing embarrassing when they're open!

Worthy, are you happy with your Sunglow? How is Blinds To Go lower quality - fabrics and/or motors? I am deciding on new shades RN . I want to do blackout shades with solar shades in 5% or 10% behind them, all motorized.

And this is why I sewed many a curtain panel in my day. The hardest part is leaving them behind when you move!!
