My daughter is looking for design advice for her fist house living room. It is outside San Diego. is it just that the couch is too big? Rug too small? tv too big for the stand? she wants it to look more cozy! i know this isn’t high end home design, but i want to help her love her new space! really appreciate your help!

Congratulations to your daughter on the purchase of her first house. Homeownership is a big step and it costs a lot of money to decorate. I think she has a good base. The couch might be a bit big for the space, but it fits and looks nice and neat. I don't mind smaller rugs - most come in 5x7 size and I think it looks fine. I think the white blinds look a little stark for the space and would suggest to get brown ones or woven shades. Then she can start adding art as she finds things that speak to her.

To me the sectional appears too large for the space. Hard to tell about the TV but it seems a little large as well. Agree that blinds are harsh and some drapery panels would go a long way to softening the space. Wall color seems a little blah. Finally art on the walls. Pull a color from the rug for drapes/pillows to provide some much needed color in the room.

    HI

Please post pictures of the other 2 walls of the room. (in the comments). Is that door the front door used regularly?

I would say the sectional is too big, but I do understand having to use what you have especially after just purchasing a home. Pull it a little off the wall so it doesn't look pushed into the corner.

The rug looks gray & the sectional looks beige on my monitor so probably not the best together. What size is the rug? As for best size, use painters tape to tape out the different sizes to see which is best. 5x7 & 8x10

Get rid of all the pillows and get one with color.

Hang the TV on the wall with a wall hung console below it. Console should be 25% wider than the TV.

Add faux roman shades to the windows for color.

FAUX ROMAN SHADE TO SHOW STYLE NOT COLOR

More pictures and dimensions would be very helpful, along with a sketch of the floorplan.

Based on that picture, yes the sectional is too big.

Love the pillows jck910 posted. I agree color will help a lot.

Congratulations to your daughter on her 1st home! Yes the sectional might be a bit large for the space but it can work. I'm presuming your daughter is young and this space doesn't look like there's a young adult living there, she needs to work on the decor.

All of the items I show below are inexpensive and available on Amazon.

Natural fibre or bamboo slat blinds, rattan armchair and coffee table, jute rug. She needs to find contrasting accent pillows something in the style shown below, and paint her rattan end table black for contrast. Then find a large canvas she likes in colours to coordinate with the decor. For the area rug, it should fit under all legs of the sectional and if budget allows can extend to have the front of the end table also sit on the rug. If she has room by the front door, a wall tree can be practical and staged nicely.

Could you post more pics of the room and area? If she wants to keep the sectional, could it possibly fit on the wall where the TV is and switch the tv to the area to the right of the window? Can't tell if that would work, but it would eliminate the sectional looking squished up against the door.

Our advice often is to live there for a bit before making changes . We need mor einfo as to her life . Is she alone ? How mant seats does she need all the time. Is this the only space for a TV or could she use a bedroom for TV . Yes the sectional is too big but what to replace it with depends on a lot more info here. The other item needed is a to scale sclae floor plan ideally of the whole house so we can help understand the whole place and how to make it function That plan done on graph paper for ease evey window , doorway and measurement clearly marked every room name too Posted here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post. IMO window coverings down the list right now so is wall color , becuase until thhose other things are done you cannot choose wall color and window coverings.

Here is narrow living room design. What I like about it is extra storage with shelving.

You can go with shelving above the sectional as well. Plus nice draperies and wall art.

She’s doing a great job with a small space.🙂. Adding to the advice already given, I would mount the tv on the wall, and replace the tv stand with a slightly taller and less deep console table that is a lighter color.

I have 5 nieces and nephews who have bought their first home in the last 6 years (big family).

None of them had the perfect furniture for their new space and, as with most first time home buyers, they spent most of their money on the down payment and have a large mortgage, so they simply cannot go out and replace everything.

I remind them all that their parents, aunts and uncles didn't start out with a house full of nice furniture and perfectly coordinated color palettes. That is the end of a 40 year journey and they are just starting their journey.

It wasn't until we were older that I recognized that the decisions we made when we picked furniture for our first home set the path for the rest of our journey. My sister's first home was a small craftsman that was 100 years old. She sought out and replaced the mish mosh of hand me down furniture with antique pieces that she still owns today. My journey started in a tiny bungalow in La Mesa CA. I happened to move when my brother got re-married. His ex wife loved mid century modern furniture and his new wife had her own furniture, so I got all MCM hand me downs that were well made and fit the tiny bungalow. I still own the bedroom set and several other pieces and often wish I would have kept the sofa and had it re-upholstered rather than replacing it. I now have all MCM furniture and live in a 1960s rambling ranch MCM home. My sister in law picked country style furnishings and finishes, lots of oak. She has gotten away from some of the country feel - no longer has a plaid skirted sofa with big rolled arms, but the oak bedroom furniture and coffee tables and dining table are still driving her design choices.

Colors are very personal and she has to know what brings her joy. My sister, sister in law and I again have very different likes when it comes to color. My colors are on top, my sisters in the middle and my sister-in-laws at the bottom. We often pick similar things for our homes, but rarely in the same color. Years ago all three of us picked the same vinyl flooring for mud rooms/laundry areas. Same manufacturer and pattern, but we each picked a different color. The taupe looked good with my colors, the greener beige looked good in my sister's home and the cream looked good in my sister in laws home.

Your daughter's living room isn't furnished with the best choices, but she can replace things one at a time once she has decided on a style and a color palette.

A smaller sofa would probably be my selection. Personally, I like her area rug and it doesn't have to be bigger.

I pulled the picture of her room and played with a few things just using excel - so please do not expect perfection - this is just a way to let you and your daughter visualize what a smaller sofa may look like and I threw in some texture on the windows and a coffee table that felt less heavy.

This website has a lot of smaller space living rooms (design firm based in India).

The styles tend to be more modern, but it may give her some ideas and see how furniture should fit in smaller spaces.

The sofa and coffee table have that lighter weight feel that makes a small room feel less full.
