P and Q daylilies 2025

We are starting the week with P and Q daylilies.

Peach Pizazz was slow to establish, a recent move has helped. It is hard for me to capture the color….this is close but a bit pale

Pizza Crust has been a great addition and has been the bud queen. It rebloomed. for me once.

Primal Scream benefitted greatly from a move. It had a great last season when others languished.

Purple Paw Print is a good small daylily. It has been the bud queen and has rebloomed.

Quasar Cutie has been another great addition. The pattern has been consistant on every bloom since it got planted. scapes are tall, blooms are smallish but well budded.

Sherry, I really like QUASAR CUTIE.

POLY ESTHER: Love the name. It polys for me about 25% of the time. Large yellow blooms in the early garden.

PURE AND SIMPLE: A great classic. Will rebloom for me when it has ample water.

    PINK TARANTULA: A favorite

PEGGY JEFFCOAT: One of the few doubles in the garden and it is superb.

    PINEAPPLE BITES

PRAIRIE PINK LACE: Love this dusty ruffled diploid.

PRINCE POPPYCOCK: New to the garden. I like it.

    PINK STRIPES: Different

PICOTEE DREAM: A nice John Benz intro.

    PINEWOOD HOLY KISS: Great bicolor.

    To be continued...

    Another PRINCE POPPYCOCK

PLANET MAX: Has connection with Bud Bennett's hybridizing program.

PARADISE BAR AND GRILL: Outstanding color

PURPLE CHEETAH: Mornig photo, before it becomes more like the sepals.

    QUEEN OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS

The following photos were taken at COTTAGE GARDENS:

PIGMENT OF IMAGINATION: Interesting, but will not take a space in my garden.

    PHAROAH'S ARROWS

    PATTERN A LA CARTE

    Have a great day!

Sherry, Peach Pizazz is very pretty! A few years ago I just dug up my Primal Scream and replanted in the same place and it has bloomed wonderfully ever since. Odd.

David, Prairie Pink Lace and Pink Tarantula are my favorites.

    Paige's Pinata

Pastures of Pleasure is a very pretty small and short daylily. Good for front row.

    Peacock Maiden

    Pinhill Claret Symphony

    Prairie Blue Eye

    Priscilla's Rainbow

    Purple Riot

    Primal Scream

    Prismatic

    Quasi Quasar, unregistered seedling

Purple Riot, one I am not familiar with, has such rich intense color. I also like Pink Tarantula, Pineapple Bites, and Quasar Cutie.

    This is Papa Goose.

Pastor Z has pretty flowers, but it's not a vigorous grower in our garden.

Peter Pan's Kiss has turned out to be a good rebloomer. It's a mini with flowers at 2.25 inches.

Phill Warbasse has a scape with a nice height. It is registered at 34 inches, but it is taller in our garden.

I agree with David about Pigment of Imagination. It will leave the garden when we clean out the bed it's in.

Professor Ninglecut has some purple teeth.

Pink Viper is a really strong grower in our garden.

Pinkie Dinky Doo is new in the garden. It is registered as a bud builder, but we have not observed that yet.

Possum Que Shane is a small flower on a robust plant.

Prickled Fingers is new to the garden so this photo is probably not how it will look when it is established. It is quite toothy though.

    A few more to come . . .

Princess Sonja has really pretty flowers, but it has not shown that it will be a good grower.

Purify My Heart is one of the whitest eyed daylilies I know.

That's all for me. We have only a couple of Q's and I haven't gotten any recent photos of them.

Sherry - I love the color combo of Peach Pizazz! Quasar Cutie always delights with its pattern and colors.

David - You have a lot of nice ones in this category, expecially Paradise Bar and Grill with its deep, rich color.

Brad - The lavender color on Pastures of Pleasure is wonderful! It looks like Primal Scream did well for both you and Sherry last year.

I left most of my registered P's behind.

I did bring Porterhouse though. It always did pretty well and sometimes rebloomed in Nashville. A semi-evergreen, It has a big flower on a short scape.

Lots of P seedlings made the trip, although most are evergreen and may be too tender for this climate.

Perseus's Sandals X Jumping Jack Flash is a semi-evergreen that I hope will flourish here.

Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #3 is one of my prettiest pink seedlings. Evergreen.

Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #4 is also evergreen.

Both of my seedlings from Pink Aloha X Bubblequeen are evergreen. #1 has the larger flower, multiplies faster, and reblooms well.

Pink Aloha X Bubblegum Queen #2

Lost my pictures twice so let me just try comments,

Quasar Cutie is indeed a cutie! Brad, love the lavender color of Pastures of Pleasure.

David, Pattern a la Carte has the big flat form I like.

Nancy, Pinkie Dinky Do has a great name and love the color.

Debra, the seedlings look great-hope they flourish!

Debra: In these pictures I like the Pink Aloha x Bubblegum queen the best. Looks more pink and less "rose pink" (rose pink can turn an ugly color in high temperatures so I shy away from it). Is it in ground or a pot?..........Nan: So many I like. The name of Pinky Dinky Do makes me chuckle. If I could get over the UF part, I'd seriously think about it as I like the color in your picture. It does appear a lighter shade of pink then in the database. Purify My Heart is another pretty one...........Brad: I'm so tickled with Paige's Pinata. I think of everyone's daylilies here as an extension of my own limited collection, and so was glad when you kept Paige's Pinata.........David: You have several that jump out at me. Korth's Pinewood Holy Kiss is appealing. Your shot of Purple Cheetah's unique coloring in the AM grabs my attention. Do you have a PM shot? And I've always liked the color on Pure and Simple. Alas it doesn't hold well in my heat.........Sherry: Quasar Cutie was much sought after when it came out. I had a chance to have a division of it, but no room in the inn at the time. Yours looks marvelous and so I'll enjoy it by extension........I only have a couple to add, but will have to wait until later. Supper calls...........Maryl

Debra, You've got a lot of nice seedlings. Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #4 and Perseus's Sandals X Jumping Jack Flash are my favorite two but they are all great.

Kate, Pistachio Showpiece is very pretty. I hope houzz works better for you tomorrow and for you too Maryl. And Maryl, you are the one who conviced me to keep Paige's Pinata, and I'm glad you did!

    Thanks for the seedling comments!

Maryl - Both Pink Aloha X Bubblegum Queen seedlings are what I would call rose pink. Both of them fade a bit in hundred degree temps but still have very pleasing color. They keep their color much better than Pink Aloha because both have heavy substance. All my seedlings are in the ground and dealing with below zero temps this winter.

Maryl and Kate - So sorry you are having trouble posting. I guess I got lucky yesterday. Maryl, Pleasant View Sunset is a beauty. I don't remember seeing it before.

Kate - I like the looks of the Pink Panther Paws clump. I had some seedlings from that one from Laura's seeds that were very good, but they got left behind. Maybe I can get some of that one from you in future years.

Nancy - Thanks for the comments on the Pink Extraordinaire seedlings! I do like Purify My Heart. Unfortunately the grubs did too, so I could not get it to multiply or grow very tall in Nashville.

It would certainly be nice if the Jumping Jack Flash seedling is hardy. I see several northern gardens offering JJF. Purify My Heart is nice, but didn't flourish here. Passing Fancy is quite short here and certainly hasn't grown like Kate's.

Quasi Quasar is an appealing color. Plastic Pink Flamingos seems to be a good grower.

Pearly Maae is a fairly tall Norris. Blooms ML.

Please Say Yes is a reliable Carpenter. I think it's quite attractive, but many people are averse to orange.

Paradise Bar and Grill. Out of Jerry Hyatt and Joan Derifield. Not as floriferous as Joan.

Party Pants. A tall Davisson that attracts attention.

Philistine Champion, a very large Korth, really showed off this past season.

Pink Aloha had some nice blooms.

Punxsutawney Phil had a great year, its clump of richly colored, large flowers demanding attention. I like this color combo, even if it is fairly common (like Desperado Love).

Pewter Lake, a Moldovan, has a unique pastel coloration.

Pray Without Ceasing had some nice blooms. More recurved than I usually like.

Playing with Crayons. Not one of Judy's taller ones, but flowers are well displayed.

    Purple Tarantula had thrips.

Purple Lives Matter. Blooms about the same time as parent White Eyes.

Purple Cheetah had a great year. Its large blooms stand out in the garden. Not many cool mornings, so no chance to display any spotting (which I seldom see).

Party Girl Panties is large, tall, and loosely casual in its form.

Passion for Red still turns heads, though bud count is that of many older Stamiles.

Initially, I labeled this as Psyche, but it is Cupid. Sorry. Not sure yet how this Hanson will perform. Grows well at Crintonic, but may be not as tall here.

Papaya Gumdrop. Alluring color, but not as good in 2024.

I added this one to the group by mistake, thinking it was Pancho Villa, but it's Crintonic Pancho Villa. Pancho Villa is a much better-fitting name for this flower rather than the HansEn lavender that bears Pancho's name (without the Crintonic).

Pineapple Bites was in a scorched part of the garden.

Professor Knows a Little --a shorter Davisson

Again with the Purple Cheetah. It's growing on me. In our heat I doubt I'd ever see spots.......... Philistine Champion always catches my eye. I think from what I've seen and heard though that the base yellow color might fade for me in my climate....Pray Without Ceasing is always an attention grabber. I'm not sure about the mulberry base color. Would have to see how it changes in the heat.....My favorites are Pink Aloha (always in my heart if not in my garden) and the Carpenter red/orange Please Say Yes. I would in fact say "YES" if I had room...........Maryl

Mantis - It's good to know Jumping Jack Flash grows in the north. Perseus' Sandals does have a dormant Gossard in its parentage, so maybe the seedling will do OK. I have two large clumps of it. I like seeing your Pray Without Ceasing photo with accurate color. So many photos in the NGA database show it being a dark blue purple. How would you rate Purple Lives Matter against Judy's other purple UFs? Which Davisson purple is your favorite?

    Debra

    last modified: last year

Some of the database pics of Pray W Ceasing are obviously taken in low light, which creates the blue-purple effect. I have not grown it long enough to get different hues, nor have the summers been cool.

Favorite Davisson purple? Well, Make It Snappy looked very saturated this past year, but this was the first year (after several) that it showed off. In contrast, Natty Man has had years with good height, appealing flower placement (Make It is rather upfacing, as I recall), and a nice watermark eye--except that I am not sure it even bloomed last summer (after a crazy winter/spring). Deep Dark Secret is shorter, a big gorgeous flat flower, but sometimes can be imperfect. Mister Mayor has more raspberry tones and narrower segments, as I recall; it's very vigorous. Purple Lives I still have not seen at full clump strength. Its plant habit is much like White Eyes. I think that at time of introduction it did not get a lot of attention because of concerns that the name was not PC. Spunky Girls is wonderfully saturated with flowers nicely spaced and good height. Webster Girls has a nice flower, but is a big plant. And there's Still the One, an older cultivar that also has sturdy scapes with well-branched and abundantly spaced blooms. (I like it a lot.) So they all have attributes, but I think that people aren't that interested in purples anymore--at least, those that don't have fancy edges.

Mantis - Excellent report on your Davisson purples. Where does Sultry Girls fall in the mix? I liked what I saw of Make It Snappy last year, but it was the first bloom year. Do you have Royal Girls? I think people who like UFs very much still like purples. Mister Mayor was vigorous for me, but I never got a high bud count or the rebloom that others do.

Yes, Sultry Girls is a deep rather eggplant purple. It is not as tall as Make It or Webster or Spunky or Still. Blooms are a bit smaller than some of the others too. Royal Girls is vigorous and floriferous. I consider it more of a lavender, although it certainly is a royal purple earlier in the morning. It fades more than some on this list. Also Reckless Girls and Heroes on Horseback (a tall one that shades towards burgundy and has a different form that doesn't lie flat).

Yes, Brad, I like Party Pants a lot too, but I suppose it is considered plain by some. Color is still my first reaction to a bloom.

    sherrygirl zone5 N il thanked mantis__oh

Mantis - Most of the pictures I've seen of Royal Girls do show it as lavender. I'm surprised Judy registered it as royal purple. I saw a huge clump of Sultry Girls growing in KY last summer, and it had true purple color - even on a hot afternoon. I was impressed with the seedlings I had from Laura's seeds with it as a parent. Unfortunately I ran out of time to bring them with me.
