nothing wrong with mixing wood and painted furniture.

if you plan to use it for an office, clear it out and place the desk, the rest should be minimal, don't need that little side table and knick knacks. move the china cabinet to a dining room

I'd put the desk in the center of the room with a chair facing the doors.

(or the window, depending on what way gives you more room for seating)

a couple of chairs on the other side of the desk. Keep it simple. You'll have nice light on your face for zoom conversations,

Make the wall interesting, but not too personal, a large framed map, or large canvas art.

Tall verticle storage behind the doors (if you need storage for paperwork, mess) or even a message board. as the first thing you see on entering the home, keep it attractive, and clean.

I would rip out all of that awful, stripey LVP flooring.

I would leave all your existing furniture just like it is, and would change those draperies to a color or to brown, since they do not go with anything in the room.

Paint ruins furniture. I can't tell you how many "upscale" pictures I've seen where someone took a nice piece of (old-fashioned) high-end mahogany furniture and slapped a coat of paint on it, turning it into something that looked like a badly painted DIY version of an IKEA piece.

I've never seen high end furniture improved with paint. There's enough cheap furniture in the world. Why create more? Bigger issue is the gray floor....that's an issue with natural wood tones.

Don't paint your furniture. That is what cheap crap is for. Figure out a layout for this room. Why do you need two chairs? Who are the two people that will sit in here and when?

1. If it is an office, figure out your desk and desk chair situation. Place them in the room.

2. Now what other furniture piece can you keep in here without it feeling like a second hand furniture store. Be intentional. It doesn't all belong in here.

3. Find a rug with some natural warm tones in it to mask the cold feel of the floor.

First real working office or home office ? I agree the floor is not great with all the real wood . No paint I agree painting god wood furniture never improves its value or looks. I think the china cabinet eith goes in a DR or a closet for accessories it looks silly in an office Not sure what you were planning with the black and white theme but why ? The drapes do not really work for me in the space at all . Waht is the plan for the giant palm fronds? That tiny table in the corner is kind of cute but not painted and for sure not there. I would agree remove everything then only add back what you need in the office and maybe anice chair where that little table could sit beside with a proper sized lamp those tiny ones do not belong at all. The plastic drawer thing gets the boot too. So what is it the office is for?

The chest seems to be in good condition, I wouldn't paint it...

You can place all the family pictures I see on the floor on the back wall. Without a floor plan it's difficult to be precise as to where each piece should be placed or relocated.

So i guess I wasn’t clear , the palms, luggage, plastic bins are not staying. It’s just been a drop all room. We just bought this house in may and i was a very traditional person, but these god awful floors which i didnt even realize when we bought it because the house was staged as a model home and these drapes were part of it. It’s been getting expensive changing everything. So i actually wanted it more as a sitting room but need a desk w a file drawer for some papers. We are both retired and other than having a desk for a laptop and a draw for papers i have no idea what to do with this room. I actually hate the floors and that is what is throwing me, but unfortunately have them thru the whole downstairs and it’s just an expense to replace them at this time. I can get rid of the curio but i dont have a dining room. I’ll post some of the downstairs pics. I kept the curio because my mil who passed gave it to me, i can move he little table i used it there to hold the statue that my younger brother gave me, who also passed at 41 yrs old. So i guess this room was a touch of the past with memories since the rest of the house which honestly i am sorry i bought is a more modern and not really my style home.

Hi Roseann, congratulations on your new home! I understand this will be your home office & that you want it to look great since this room is seen as you enter your home. Please describe the function of this office. Is it your work from home office or the place where your computer and business papers will be set up & stored in your home? There’s a really big difference in the functions of those two kinds of offices. You asked about painting the pieces of furniture - I agree with @lisedv & would absolutely not paint any of them. I also wouldn’t do a black & white chair theme with your floors. Your drapes are perfectly fine. I also agree with @ffpalms about looking for a rug & pulling colors from it. It would be great if the rug has a bit of black in the design to tie in with the drapes. with your 13’ x 10’ room I’d look for an 8’x 10’ rug & lay it with the 10’ length going the 13’ width of the room. You want to make sure the french doors will open / close over the rug so the rug + pad should be flat. Nice wool rugs will work. I note pieces on the walls the doors are on - be mindful that you’ll want to open those doors flat against the wall for optimum air flow & so the doors don’t block the room by standing open. That means no furniture on those short walls but art / pictures are ok. The desk - what do you need for your work to be done at desk? Back to the question about the function / type of office you need / want.

Hi KW it is just a place to open a laptop and hold some papers. I do not need a full fledge office. I didnt know what to do with this room. I was considering a craft room but i have an enormous room upstairs that can be used for crafts and you wont see the project im working on, then possibly a dining room. So i just thought just a sitting room with maybe 2 chairs and small table so i can read or talk on the phone, but would like to have a small printer and need a place for a laptop so my husband has a place to keep it.

My kitchen if you look at the pics i posted is open to an eating area, i already purchased a white table with black chairs and black bar stools and i believe gray seats. I ordered the set in sept. So it’s coming on saturday finally. So the drapes in that room and eating living room area are all black and white along with a powder room that also has charcoal /white egrets on it. I am located 5 min from Bethany beach Delaware. I can part with the curio, and the accent table which was a project of mine i can relocate to upstairs which has mostly warm woods bahama feel.
I happen to see a black painted and a blue painted piece and thought that it might work with painting that piece, doing a black wall or an all white room with feature wall. That’s where the idea of black and white chairs came from, i would like to keep that 1 piece and have my family pictures in there, so i can also paint the frames different colors . As you can tell im at a lost. I came from a home built in 1903 with timeless warm color furniture. So it’s been hard to transition to a more modern look at my age of 70. I wanted the room to have a pop of style as you come in. So im open to suggestions of any kind. I appreciate your input. Thank you. Here is what i saw . I realized i like lite floors and blues but have a hard time bringing in color with all the black and white.

No to the chair, although the chair is beautiful. You need to work with things you already have. You dont have any black that I can see. Stay with the brown tones. I would definitely change those draperies. Maybe you can reuse them elsewhere, but, I would look for new inexpensive ones that actually go with your furnishings. I dont mind the floors at all. I would put a rug in there, though, and I do like the rug pictured in one of the posts above.

Hi Roseann - Thanks for providing some background info on your new home move in status. I get it now! The first thing I’d do is wait until your new kitchen / dining furniture arrives & you have it all set up. I think seeing more than bare cold space will make you feel much more at home & then you can focus on creating a home study / sitting room that you’ll love & fits with the rest of your new pieces. Creating a study/ reading room sounds perfect for the space. Because the room looks out to front of house I think you might use the room a lot if it has comfortable chairs & is a pretty space. IMO you should keep the pieces you love in that room because they’re dear to you. You said your dining set & counter stools are black & grey colors. I see only one window with drape panels in the kitchen area - are there more windows with matching drapes in that space? I’m asking because I wondered if the study drapes could be swapped with the dining area drapes - sounds like the darker drapes would work in that space too. You said the study is the first room you see as you enter home. My question is now about what pieces you have in the entry? What art / rug / tables? If nothing yet then I think you should plan these two spaces together so they’re connected furnishings wise. I’m also trying to get a better look at the style of the chandelier in the study. I’d consider it when selecting furnishings - it’ll be a pretty accent in the room. For your desk - take a look at this site for ideas of nice furniture desk styles. It’s Ballarddesigns.com - I think this room might be a great space for you to use the colors of blue that you love. It would mean changing out the drapes but as @cat_ky said, you might be able to use them in another room. So, take a deep breath, get your new furniture in place then work on this room & entry! You’ve made the first & most important decision - what this space will be - a study & reading/sitting room. Find the desk & a piece the printer will sit on first. Can the pretty 3 drawer cabinet hold a printer on its top? Not sure it’s large enough but check. . Next, look for 2 comfy chairs - maybe small swivel chairs to sit in front of window? That pretty small demilune table - can it be the table between the 2 chairs? Think about a rug while you’re looking for the chairs. Does your entry need a rug? Look for the same colors & maybe even use the same rug in both spaces if sizing available. You have lots to think about but you’re on the right track!

Rugs, rugs, rugs… and don’t paint the furniture.

It’s easier (and cheaper) to replace the drapes than paint wood furniture. And rugs will solve the problem of the floors you are not happy with.
