Why doesn't your husband want a rug?

What would be the purpose of a wooden table in the middle of the room?

if you will be hosting 10-12 people, everyone needs a place to sit.

Why do you need an overhead light if you can get enough lighting throughout the room?

Are you prepared to do any electrical work, or is this merely decorative?

I will wait for the to scale plan of that space and a floor plan of the whole main living space. The plan for the room needs to show window, doorways where those leade and every measurement clearly marked post here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another pose but in another comment post pics of the space and so idea of the sizes of all the instruments and for sure what kind of piano.

I changed browsers and was able to upload some photos. And here is some additional information. I will also do a sketch as requested, but don't have the available yet. I will take pictures of other instruments as well.

Just a friendly reminder that rug/lamp/furniture is just a placeholder to help show how I am considering placing furniture. I do not plan on using those chairs/pillows/ottoman. Also, I plan to get an attractive stand for the keyboard, hopefully one that closes. Also, the curtains came with house and will be replaced. I am considering putting an accent table or cabinet to left of base where I could place a lamp, bass player could set a drink.

It could be nice to have a cabinet with some storage for music books, etc.

We play old time appalachia music -- fiddles, banjos, guitar -- , and are wanting to creative a warm and cozy space, with some rustic flavor mixed in if possible. But we do need furniture without arms for playin instruments, which has that modern feel, so I'm not sure how to create this mix.

Dimensions: The wall with the large window is 24 feet. The portion with keyboard is 4'8; the window is 8'7; the wall behind the bass is 7'9. The opposing wall, where the couch/loveseat would go (where ottoman currently is), is 13'4.

To answer Lyn's questions:

1. My husband does want a rug. He would like to have the one in the photo (ugh) -- some kind of sentimental attachment -- but I plan to replace it. Ideas are welcome.

2. When we have a music jam everyone will be sitting in a circle. That is the way old time music jams happen. We will bring folding/kitchen chairs into the room to supplement seating .

3. When we have a jam, it is helpful to move a coffee table in the center of the circle so people have a place to put drinks. We wouldn't keep it there, just move it to the center during a music jam.

4. I'm happy to light the room with all lamps. Just providing that info about no overhead lighting because I need to light with lamps and trying to figure out where they will be placed, and floor.

I know tons of people who play old timey music and have attended many jam sessions. Don't over design this room. You need an empty room that you can reconfigure depending on how the group organically converges. Make this space functional. Have a few jam sessions in it first then fine tune it.

1. You are not going to get a circle of 10-12 people in here. You are going to get an oblong oval shape. Not everyone is going to be able to reach a coffee table in the middle for drinks. You are going to need a few little drink tables here and there.

2. Space for playing, sitting, instruments, and drinks will eat up your floor space. No room for floor lamps. Get two of the same overhead lights in this room one centered on each end of the room. Put them on dimmers.

3. Hang instruments on the walls.

4. Have four stable nice chairs in this room -- like the red chairs. Then get some stacking stools to keep in the corner. Younger people can perch in the stools, older folks get the more comfortable chairs. Forget a love seat. You are not making a sitting room but rather a music room.

5. Take the bi-fold doors off, install shelves, and use it as a cabinet for music books.

I like the rug. Your husband wins.

Thanks so much for your really thoughtful and helpful comments, Kendrah! you’re spot on that i was trying to make this a sitting room and music room unnecessarily… we really would not hang out on love seat and four chairs is way more versatile. We actually have stools at our kitchen table we can bring in and chairs fromrdining table. originally i was thinking to just put the two chairs in, but then it felt so empty. anyway, thanks for helping me shift perspective and think toward function. and my husband will be happy that the rug gets your vote LOL!

I also like the rug. I agree about try to make this a multi use room. It may make it more difficult for music time. But I think it could still be decorative - great artwork showing instruments, places to " hang" or stand your instruments and then your seating. I think you could have a love seat in there, but make sure it is one that someone could sit on with their instrument ( maybe no arms on the sides? ) .

I would get some fabulous musicians chairs

and then some of the convertible ottomans ( they store extra seating ) but only if they are tall enough to comfortably sit on and play.

Sometimes they can be used as tables as well. Or get some great nesting tables - pullout what you need and then they can be put away when done

Agree with Kendra mostly except I’d add that while it won’t be a sitting room you might want to include places for your groupies to sit! :) people who come along just to listen. (I’m one when my husband plays) that’s where the love seat would be nice.
