And any changes to top decor would be welcome as well. I probably need to change the overhead light. I really liked it when I picked it out, just not crazy about it when I turn it on! Lol

The overhead does cast harsh light on the space . If not a lot of light is generally needed then using the picture light is a good idea, provided it gives enough to light the stairs for safety. Hardwiring is best but if it needs to be corded hide the cords as best as you can.

For the decor I’d get some taller pieces that pull the print and cabinet together.

If 26 1/2 inches is the frame’s width, a 16-inch light sounds visually reasonable to me—it’s about three-fifths of that width. I’d check the spread of light as well as the fixture’s length, though: with a tall picture, you don’t want a bright strip across the top and a dark lower half. An adjustable head/arm would be useful, and I’d check for glare from the bottom of the stairs before fixing its position.

For a rechargeable one, think about how easily you can remove it for charging and check runtime at the brightness you’d actually use. I’d keep the stair lighting separate rather than rely on the picture light for that.

The overhead fixture’s open framework seems to be creating much of the shadow pattern you dislike. If you replace it, I’d look at a diffused shade rather than another exposed-bulb cage. Your painting could stay the focal point without adding much more on the cabinet.

Thank you so much Emily! The stair lights automatically come on when you come close to the stairs, so no problem there. I only use that ceiling light if I need to get in the closet on the right. I agree with your decor selection. Will look for something similar

Thanks Roomxlab. Good catch on the glare from the bottom of the stairs! I don’t want that. So for sure need an adjustable arm. Thanks for that! The stair lights are separate and come on when approached, so that’s fine.

Maybe just the new light at the top of stairs with 3 heads one of which lights the art.
