Bathroom Backsplash and Floor Help!

last modified: 29 days ago

My husband built gorgeous birch cabinets for our MB, ( all pics in comments) and in the meantime I had bought Crema Dotty marble floors that I thought would go great. We had leftover countertops from our kitchen that I thought were not so busy because what we put in the kitchen wasn't. Turns out when they put it in I was a little upset with how busy it is. Although it looks beautiful it's too busy. My husband said I could change it but I don't want to waste the money. Now I believe that the floor is much too busy and does not go with the countertop. Do you think once the grout is in the floor it won't be as busy? And secondly, if I use subway tile for the backsplash either all going up the wall not staggered at all or even horizontally up the wall but not staggered is that still going to be too busy? Would it be less busy with glass White Tile? I've never had so much hard time with doing a room I've done every other room in the house that do not have a hard time this one is just not coming together well. Thank you!

Seems like a busy look from the photos. Maybe finding a color you like to round out all the brown in a rug to inspire an answer to your questions. We are struggling with master bath as well, just tore out the new tile job as it wasn’t the vision.

Thanks so much! I decided to sell the floor and if we can't sell it then we'll just do all the closet floors with it. We had leftover wood flooring from the kitchen that obviously goes perfect with this particular countertop and when my husband brought down some of it for me to look at I instantly got goosebumps and new I actually love what floors even in the bathroom so as much as some people don't like that I just have to make sure I keep the water off the floor and everything will be fine. I was kind of going for that wood Zen look, just very relaxed and warm so kind of excited now that I know how great the floor looks. How could I forget I see my kitchen everyday?

Reply. Laurie...oh no! That's so aweful! I agree on the floor so we're going with the hardwood we had in the kitchen. Im so sorry you had to rip it out! This is why I have a hard time making a decision I don't normally on other rooms but this room is just killing me I don't know what the issue is. My husband doesn't understand why it's taking me so long it's because well once you get it up it's a lot of work and money to undo it. Now that I've got my floor set I think I'm just going to go with very unbusy white zellige subway tile. Now it's like the decision of should I go bigger so it doesn't look as cluttered or will it look more cluttered should I use this pattern or that pattern? It's just ridiculous. LOL good luck with your new tile!

Reply Laurie, thank you! It looks much better in person. But this is pretty much what our kitchen looks like only the part of the we used in the kitchen was the better part it wasn't so busy.

That’s a terrific kitchen. Interesting ceiling and light. Hope this bathroom problem solved puts the end in sight and you can enjoy your home. We have a structural problem as we removed a dropped in bath tub with plan to enlarge shower but after tub was out, we realized existing windows made that impossible. We have to resolve the dead space left under the windows and the pony wall that attached the shower to the tub. My husband tiled the shower but it looked like a fireplace when he was done due to alcove space. It’s always something…

    The wood floor is beautiful.

Laurie, we have a window in our shower. It is sealed, does not open though. Design your shower with the window included.

Hatdwood in a bathroom??!! what about a wood look tile?

Tracefloyd there are 3 windows and the limited space between two windows doesn’t match up to extending the glass for a shower. We had planned on doing that but once the bathtub was out it was clear it wasn’t an option without remodeling the exterior wall which isn’t an option. So leaves us with 36 inches of dead space from shower side to windows. Walk-in shower using the dead space for entry was next thought but it would be too cold for me to not have a door. Didn’t get much help from talking with two designers but thinking of doing that again before we go forward

Reply Dee.. yes we thought about the wood look tile. But we had enough left over from the kitchen we just want to use it, Plus in the olden days they used wood and if it goes bad eventually we'll either replace it or considering our age it will be somebody else's problem. I'm pretty good about keeping the floor clean and not wet so with rugs and stuff it shouldn't be a problem. I got your trepidation on that but I don't have an issue with it.

    Reply Tracefloyd...thank you.
I know it's not most people's cup of tea to have a real hardwood floor in the bathroom but I don't like the tile because most of the tile is too short and it doesn't look like wood and I absolutely abhor vinyl. I know I'm a weirdo but thanks for saying it looks nice!

Reply Tracefloyd... I don't know about the glass tile either I don't have any in-house to see what it would look like I just thought I would order some samples. What is your trepidation about the glass tiles with this particular countertop? I'm talking straight up one color. This countertop is actual natural quartzite and it's quite shiny so I thought it might go but then again it might be too much. I also have some matte tiles coming in as well. I could use all the help I could get.

I don't know but to me the statement is the marble. The glass would be a distraction to my eye-- another focal point not needed.

Reply Tracefloyd... okay thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind. I'm actually really looking forward to the mat tiles coming in. Probably will post pics with different tiles to get your opinion because my husband just says I don't care one way or the other but I need at least somebody else's opinion on this. There's no natural light in this room so I thought it might not hurt to have more shiny but next year when we do the opposite side of the room cuz we only do half of the room at a time monetarily wise it just makes more sense for us, we are putting in a window opposite that area it's hard to picture what that's really going to do for the look of that area but you may be right on that. I'd appreciate you checking back once in awhile to see if I put any more up because I could use an opinion other than my own!

Reply Tracefloyd... this is one of the matte tiles that I'm considering. White on white. Because the countertop has round soft flowy Parts more than straight edges in the pattern, I thought this might go and give the wall some texture but using white tile with white grout would not be super busy. I'm not sure if I'll feel the same when I seen in person but I'm absolutely in love with it online. Thoughts?

I like this vertical white hex with white grout a lot.

I wonder, too, whether shiny tile or matte with the shiny marble. I think shiny glazed tile will tie in with the marble better...same surface texture.

Reply Tracefloyd... thanks! It's not actually hex it's like an elongated fish scale, they remind me of like aspirin like the oval kind of aspirin. LOL anyway, it comes in matte or shiny and I'm leaning toward the mat. I was reading online and I think it's just a matter of opinion probably either will look good. They say shiny with Chinese fine so long as you don't have a ton of light in the room which we don't it's a bathroom that it has no natural light yet but will have next year. So they said to just balance out but either one will go so I guess it's a matter of I have to make up my own mind. LOL here's a picture from the website so you can see exactly what the tile looks like. Thank you thank you thank you so much for your help I appreciate bouncing ideas off of you very much!

Matte always has more depth because the eye has no reflection on which to focus.
