The cowhide goes better with the rustic qualities of the room, but my personal preference will always be flokati in any room. Sorry!

Cowhide looks great.

Maybe a traditional Persian rug in a deep red and black? I'm trying to find an example. I just think the red would really create a good contrast. The flokati one is too close to the beige of the couch and the cowhide has the same problem with being too close too the color of the wood.

or an oriental rug like this if the contrast color was black (it might look okay without the black too)

The cowhide, hands down. It's brings texture and pattern into the room. Go 36" or bigger square ottoman. Go a color like teal, or dark red. For fun.

Thanks, Tatiana! The couch is actually gold and really pops against the flokati but the (iPhone) picture washes it out a bit. We are going for a more contemporary look with the decor because the architectural details are already all very traditional.

You need pattern in your pillows pick accent color and mix it up on pillows. In size, pattern and shape.

I like the pattern that the cowhide offers, but I'm a sucker for the feel of a flokati so that would be my choice on texture alone.

I think flokati but do a cowhide large ottoman. Wouldn't you like to put your feet up reading in the library? Great table too.

It seems to me that there might be a tug of war between what "she" wants and what "he" wants. I would guess that the upholstered couch and flokati are desired by one and the tufted leather couch and cowhide by the other. I may be incorrect in that statement but either way I suggest selecting a furniture style before selecting the area rug. That being said, if both couches absolutely must stay, I would find a cowhide that incorporates multiple colors that will tie the two pieces together. Cowhide rugs are also available in great patterns such as chevron stripes, diamond patterned, starburst etc. that will be less predictable and give the room the same feel that you are trying to achieve. Sheepskin or flokati pillows can be used as accents..

I like the cow hide. The flokati is a bit too white for the room.

I'd don't know if its me or the cowhide rug looks smaller than the flokati. What I'm getting at is, have you tried putting the cowhide rug on top of the flokati rug? The flokati rug will tuck nicely under the sofas, and the cowhide can float in front. I find the flokati too plain on it's own, and the cowhide just disappears into the floor. Placing the cowhide on top of the flokat, will give it a nice border, and make it pop out from the floor.

I'm surprising myself and choosing the cowhide. I like the way the mottled colouring mimics the lovely walls, as well as the sofas. It adds character that I find missing in the photo with the flokati.

I would go with a traditional rug that has a pattern and some color. Than add some fabulous pillows....

Actually, one of the first things to catch my eye, were the red books on the shelf. I agree about lightening up on the floor, as it's looking rather somber....(More in the line of being a PRIVATE MEN'S CLUB). It doesn't seem to have much natural light. Tatiana T showed a beautiful rug in the foreground of the showroom, in her attached pics.

brabyjm, we got it from a local leather outlet (Tandy Leather). They have a website, but there's no substitute for visiting the warehouse and looking through all their options! A 5x7 will cost around $250.

I think the flokati is better suited because the cowhide is quite busy. Like a few other people, I agree that it's a bit too light for the room though. I love your bookcase by the way!

I would go with flokati.

The flokati says "bedroom" to me and is too much contrast with the dark walls. That said, the cowhide is too much. Maybe just a large skin would give you the right feeling yet not overwhelm the room.

Perhaps a light coloured flat weave rug with cowhide or zebra layered on top? Similar to pic below

I agree with the pro that you might consider a traditional rug in a lighter color that ties together the wood on the walls and the sofas. Mahogany stain needs special consideration so the reds don't overpower-checkout some wall color blogs on selecting color for wood.

If you really want the cowhide then I would recommend a larger rug in patchwork to balance the darkwood everywhere. Be sure to include more lamps.
