the good old days didn't worry about safety..I would've liked it but the roller coaster unsupervised (as pictured) looks dangerous!!..

June Rev - Can I label as Halcyon?

old_dirt..I have a question..I have Junes that are reverting..I decided to let them be..they're crowded and not easy to split..and I love Halcyon..do you recall how long it took to turn to Halcyon?..

at the moment it's 6 degrees here..it's so cold and drab..

the blue hosta photos are such a treat 🙂..

a photo of doves yesterday..I wanted to show all of you their sweet faces..

  • last year

They really are sweet and I am sure they appreciate your offerings!

  • last year

nicholsworth - I split the rev's out and potted them. It only took a few years for them to fill out, very vigorous. I have at least three June's and have to take out at least one reverting eye or two every year.

old_dirt..ahhh..I didn't realize to have a fully blue hosta I'd need to separate the blue 🤦‍♀️..I was thinking the blue just takes over..I guess I'll need to work on mine or I'll have a plant with mismatched leaves..is that right?..

  • last year

A few blocks away in the front yard are four Junes growing for as long as I remember. They don't grow larger due to tree roots. But they are slowly reverting. None of them in several years (maybe even in a decade) have totally become Halcyon.

I will have to walk by this season and take an updated photo.

newhostalady..thank you for the info and photos..it makes sense to me that a June would always retain some variegated leaves..I was thinking that someone said to separate the blue to keep the June from fully reverting..and yet when I bought them, they had no solid leaves..so even if I separate the blue, I wonder if the remaining leaves could revert?..I have so much work to do I doubt if I will ever separate them 😂..
I don't even hate the mix of leaves..😉

  • last year

I thoughgt, eventually they would be all blue but maybe not. I do have a couple non Halcyon/June that have totally reverted.

old_dirt..I have several Junes with blue leaves..I've decided to leave them alone and see what happens!..a different pic of 3 of them..the left is pretty normal..the middle one is kind of funny..the right one has blue leaves..

  • last year

Since June came out of a batch of tissue cultured Halcyon it should revert back to Halcyon. As to how quickly/slowly June would fully revert...I would imagine it has a great deal to do with how stressed the plant is and for how long. I would remove the reverted eyes but that is just me. Each to their own.

Ann I wonder if the plain one on the right is a seedling of June as opposed to it reverting.

    Great blues here:

After looking at the Love Pats here, I’m convinced mine ADG is ADG and not LP.

I think you can call reverted June Halcyon. Then Halcyon sometimes reverts to June!

    Here are my blues:

after my comment with the photo of 3 Junes I was off my phone a few hours..

Laurie..hmmm..I never thought about having a seedling..I've seen June reversions here and just assumed reversion..when I took a close look at the blue leaves on my Junes they appear to be part of the crown..it made me reluctant to separate them..not as easy as I like..lol..

debra..I take it back..I said what you thought could be ADG didn't have cupped leaves like my ADGs..I see cupped leaves in your recent photo..you're another one with a lot of blues!..

some of my ADGs are extremely cupped..see the leaves at the top of this pic?..maybe they flatten as they grow..

  • last year

Nicholsworth, if you separate the blue from June, it doesn't mean that your June will not produce blue leaves again in time.

newhostalady..you're right!..old dirt answered my question before I asked it..but I missed it..he separates his reversions but he said he has to take out at least one reverting eye or two every year..reversions must be a constant battle..

I thought this group of Junes was reversion free..but when I found the pic I was wrong..see the blue in the middle close to the bench?..

I'm giving up!..I'm too old to worry about it 😜..

  • last year

Personally I like the blue in the June! The only part I don't like is knowing that the blue areas will become larger and larger in time. Funny how some June plants never revert and other ones do regularly! Maybe the June in the middle will be the only one to produce blue eyes?

I hope I can get another photo of the Junes in my neighborhood so I can compare it with my last photo. I can only say that the blue of those Junes is very slow growing. But that may be also due to the tree root competition. In the picture you can see that these Junes are planted right by a tree. That is not the only tree nearby---so lots of tree roots.

I agree..I like the blue leaves in June..it is funny that not every June reverts..I think in general my hostas are slow growers (except Clausa!)..my hostas have tree root competition and shade..

this older picture has less blue than now..

  • last year

    Very pretty!

  • last year

A few blues that look the bluest to me (If that makes sense to anyone else).

Aquamarine ....does have a little purple tinge along the edge.

    Blue Angel above BME

    Blue Hawaii

    Deane's Dream

    Deep Blue Sea

    Hovercraft

    Waterslide

    mbug..to me..definitely blue!..

  • last year

Very beautiful and very blue Mike!

  • last year

It was most interesting for me to see Beth's and mbug's lovely Deep Blue Sea. They both look so different. I happen to have one in a poor location. I have had it for many years---7 to be exact. I think it was two eyes last year. But mine looks more like Beth's. I hope to dig it out and remove the tree roots in the soil. I think the tree roots are winning the battle. The older I get, the faster the roots seem to grow! And Paula when you said "I have this illusion that this year I will have more room ...............," well my illusion is that I will be able to "save" the hosta in my root infested garden!
