Cabinet Install Expectations

last year
last modified: last year

I am curious of other people's experience with cabinet installations, and what is considered a normal amount of damage. I know things won't be perfect, but we have a scratch, chip or gouge like what you see below on almost every cabinet installed.

The builder is saying they can all be touched up. It honestly looks like they were dragging the cabinets around on the plywood prior to putting them on the walls. One of the cabinets has a 6-8in knife slice through the finish where they cut open the packaging (last photo).

I am trying to be patient and let them try the repairs and see how it looks, but I'm having a hard time believing it won't be obvious it was touched up everywhere.

Thanks!

My cabinets were incredibly well wrapped and handled like a baby during install. I never experienced anything like this. A new cabinet should not have chips that need to be repaired. The fourth pic also looks like there is separation happening between the side and bottom. My condolences.

What brand of cabinets, and who did the install?

  • last year

Medallion cabinets -- they were installed by the custom home builder who has a large number of plans built around here.

Absymal and unacceptable. We have built custom homes since the late '80s. If the cabinet supplier shipped product in that condition, it should never have been accepted by the builder.

I have been blessed with working with builders that would never let the home owner see such things. They would have taken care without the home owner knowing and many times not even I would not know. I had a project on Lake Michigan that had 95 windows. 85% of them were shipped to the site with the extension jam 1/8" off in a six foot tall window. The builder made the manufacturer ship out new windows and charged them for the labor of changing the windows out. There are some builder I know not to cross.

Why didn't the cabinet design shop install those? I bet the builder wanted to save money on labor. And he ruined them.

I did a full kitchen remodel with stained cabinets and a custom build with white cabinets, and neither of them had any damage like this.

I would not be happy with that and the touch-ups will never look perfect.

I feel your pain. We went through this except our cabinets were natural maple. The doors and drawers looked like they were just thrown into a truck with no protection. Dents, scratches, chipped corners. A complete mess. The cabinet doors and drawers that were damaged had to be redone by a different cabinet maker that my builder brought in. Any damage on the face frames were done onsite. My builder had used this cabinet maker for a while After our kitchen he no longer used him. A majority of his business was with my builder. The cabinet guy went out of business.

" they were installed by the custom home builder who has a large number of plans built around here. "

I doubt he is a custom home builder as that type of builder would never allow that to happen. Maybe a small repair or two but that is atrocious and all those repairs will be visible for ever. As stated above, you paid for new cabinets not repaired. This may be the hill to die on.

Thank you everyone for the responses! This confirms a lot of my thinking.

They are one of the biggest name builders in the city. I will try to confirm exactly who installed the cabinets.

Unfortunately this is only a small sample. There are easily over 20 chips through the finish, almost every end cabinets bottom looks like it was dragged, they drilled the power for the oven through the middle of the wrong cabinet, and didn't cover the black island properly when painting the ceiling and it has white overspray on it (more than just the photo), etc.

I am honestly baffled at what is going on, most of the process up until now has been great.

Your photos look like the "before" pictures prior to a remodel. I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I hope you get those replaced (at no cost to you).

No response from the builder all week on this. I am meeting them on site Mon for some unrelated items, I am sure they know this will be the real topic of conversation.

They should know it will be a real factor in invoice payment.

update: builder said they have amish trim carpenters put the cabinets in. admitted its very likely the cabinets were dragged around, and that they have this problem with all of their houses. i told them they shouldn't be using them then, but they said others they have tried were worse.

i did get them to order a new cabinet from the knife cut, and 2 more door fronts that had misaligned handles. they also ordered a new back panel to cover up the mis-drilled electrical hole. they insist their touchup guy will make most of the rest invisible. i told them to go ahead and try, but if we can we will be needing more replacements.

His response that other ones were worse than a team who installed cabinets is a poor exuse and is builder's problem to resolve not yours. Good luck!

They shouldn't even install the doors and drawers until after the counters go in. My GC and cabinet people installed all the boxes and then waited for the counters to be installed to come back and add the doors, drawers and hardware. No damage and waste when you care enough to do things the right way. My GC is always busy and gets all his work from referrals.

So much for "amish trim carpenters"!

This reminds me of the Far Side cartoon showing a builder slapping his palm to his forehead as he stands in an unfinished kitchen and the caption reads, "Nolan the builder never thought about hiring amish CABINET INSTALLERS."
