Why? What you have works - the art doesn’t seem too large for either the wall or sectional. Rug is good with sectional color & it provides interest & texture. I would definitely pull the rug forward so only the front feet of sectional are sitting on the rug. The chair in the lower right corner needs more of the rug to sit on too & pulling rug forward fixes that, The walkway behind the sectional will look so much better with not being cut in half lengthwise by the bit of rug behind the sectional. The art on the wall will look better too with the proper placement of the rug!

Unfortunately, my dogs have destroyed the current rug. You can't really tell in the picture, but it has definitely seen better days. I have cleaned several times and the last few times, it just didn't come back to life. Thank you for the response. I will place a new rug closer to the fireplace. I am thinking of breaking up the space behind the sofa with a console table and lamps. Also, we need a spot to put drinks that isn't on the ground where the mischievous dogs help themselves. :)

Dogs have destroyed rug? If you mean too many ’accidents’ maybe don’t have a rug? If you do add a console table with lamps behind sofa I think sofa needs to pull forward into the room so the walkway isn’t jammed up or crowded looking. A long table will allow a lamp to be in the middle or 1 at each end which will be great for layered lighting / reading while sitting on sofa. The ottoman could use a big tray on it to use for a surface to set things on & which is easily moved to also put feet up. Can’t address dogs ’helping themselves’ - well - assuming they have free access to a fresh water bowl then it sounds like a training issue. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No accidents on the rug, just coming inside with dust and/or dirt on them before I can get them cleaned off. It has gotten imbedded in the rug. Even professional cleaning, the pile won't stand up like it does on the one part of the rug that was covered by the old couch, so it still looks new. I will for sure move the couch forward if I add a sofa table. Would a table need to be on the rug? Also, a tray is a great idea to break up all the blue of the couch/ottoman. Maybe even a throw as well. As for the dogs, they are just spoiled, but they absolutely have access to fresh water. I think they think that whatever we have might just be better.

Spoiled dogs??! I know nothing of that kind of dog! 🤭🐶 While you’re thinking about new rug maybe just pull the existing rug forward & turn it so part that was under old sofa is exposed. That will give you time & vision to figure out sizing of new rug. No, a sofa table behind sofa shouldn’t be on the rug. In your setup, the walkway behind the sofa will look great with no exposed rug there - with or without a console table behind sofa. The guideline for area rug placement is generally that front feet only of the sitting furniture pieces sit on the rug - no point in hiding most of an area rug under the furniture that sits mostly around the edges of the room. If the area rug is too small then no feet on rug. Generally it’s all front feet on rug around the room or no front feet on the rug - consistent look. But, don’t hide a huge portion of the rug under the sofa. Area rugs aren’t wall to wall carpet which act like the flooring for a room. Area rugs are meant to be seen, not hidden.
