boring living room

last year

I would love some advice on what to do with my living room to help it feel like a cozy family room. I like rustic style but nothing with the stereotypical cow photo. I’m not into a lot of color but I don’t mind adding pops of it to bring some life to the room. Limited wall space due to mostly windows. What ideas do you have?

Hard to see the whole room. More pics will help .

Start with a more colorful area rug

Find a piece of art you love for over the sectional and since you like thinks more minimal, I would then just add plants.

Do guests who would prefer to sit rather than lounge ever use the space? if yes, I’d add at least 1 accent chair, a side table, a table lamp, a floor lamp near the couch, and artwork.

Thanks for the replies. I have a sitting room right next to the living room with 2 chairs a small table ect. When the couch is fully occupied I move the ottomans to create more seating. So more seating will not be beneficial for the room.

What color(s) would you like for "pops of color" in the room? Is there a certain accent color(s) that you've used in other rooms and would like to use in this room also?

What color paint is on the walls? Are you willing to repaint them if needed in order to work with certain accent colors?

Where do people set glasses/plates/etc. while using the room?

I like green but I’d be open to some red burgundy or yellow. I haven’t accented with any colors yet in my house still in the process of decorating so everything is brown beige and cream. I am open to painting the walls it’s a neutral grey and we don’t eat/drink in the living room.

You have a massive solid brown sectional with three (!) ottomans. You have plain neutral wall.s. You have a wall of neutral curtains. You have a neutral rug. You have three (!) neutral throws on top of the sectional. Adding “pops” of color is an inadequate afterthought. Color and pattern need to be woven into the room intentionally. At this point, look for some fabulous inspiration artwork and pull colors from that for a rug and an accent chair. Get rid of at least two of the ottomans. Add side tables and lamps to create warm pools of light. This looks like a furniture showroom, not a home.

I’d start collecting throw pillows in the colors you see outdoors. How beautiful that scenery is! Colorful art would help too, but no landscape art is needed here.

Think about modern style floor lamps , an arc lamp maybe? Lamp light is good to create warmth in the evening….
