Design Dilemma

last year

Blank room 11x12.5
Armoire on large wall is staying
No TV
Looking to make this a conversation area. We live at the beach, but lived in a large city for decades. I like subtle beach accessories, but not over the top. This is our home, not a beach house.
Dilemma is the whole room is huge, with the kitchen on the opposite side and large doors going to the deck.

Your home is lovely but it's rather dark. Would suggest adding more lighting fixtures or maybe you have enough but they just aren't turned on.

Oh no, this room could pass for the sun withe recessed lights. It’s just early morning and I’m like a bat.

Sofa on the long wall with a coffee table. Two matching chairs in front of the window angled toward the middle of the room with a large side table in between them. (matching each other. coordinated, not matching, the sofa.) Floor length drapes on either side of the window. Art over the sofa. Perhaps a rocking chair or windsore chair on the wall with the armoire. Have fun!

Just curious but what is in the armoire? I think it might look good on the wall with the fish art at the end of the counter run. The room could then have what auntthelma suggested or maybe 4 chairs around a round coffee table.

The room is not "huuuge". It's the size of a kids bedroom.

I'd find a different spot, different room for the armoire, have a prettier more useful view as well

Suburbia is different than city. A kitchen is the hub

Even a tv ....( smart tv can be ART when not in use, with a low console below. Or " FIRE" Plug one in! Some are amazingly realistic.

The point? The armoire is the daily view from the kitchen. There are lots of places to use one - bedroom....dining storage!

But you probably find that everyone gathers back here .....in a space you may not have had in the city.

This works with the armoire of course, just depends your view each day. Standing lamps flank the sofa, a cocktail table within reach... a couple comfy swivel chairs...and art.

( way too many hanging lights in that kitchen btw ) Maybe get to that at some point. Let the daylight light in ! The boogey man isn't coming : )

This room is not all that large. Can you place it on the wall where the fish are?

It would be really helpful if you included a drawing with measurements of the specific parts of the walls where furniture can be placed: what is the distance from the doorway arch to the corner, the length of the back wall, the corner to the sliders. How high is the window sill off the floor? How deep is the armoire? We need to know measurements to be able to give a realistic layout.

Also, how many do you want to seat in this room? Three, four?

The key to making it not feel like a focal point is to decorate around it - add pictures to the walls on either side of it, give it a layered feel by having some furniture over lap with it - better yet, don't center it on the wall. Move it to the left - not all they way in the corner, though you could try that too, and have a chair on a diagonal facing towards the center of the room partially overlap in front of the cabinet.

I love that you do not have a TV in this room!

I am thinking a TV hiding in that large armoire would be perfect for baking day!! People gather near kitchens it seems. If you are busy in the kitchen your guests will draw close. Your post insinuates because there is a TV it is on. Orientate the room so the outside is maximized.

The armiore on the fish wall would make a great pantry.

No TV in the room. Hiding or otherwise. The armoire opens to my husband’s home office. Drop down desk, printer, computer. I use the desk for my artwork. It’s multi functional, which we appreciate for this small space.

We had it on the wall with the fish, but it’s too big for that space.

We could move it to the other wall in this room and put a sofa on the big wall. Ideally, I would like a piece with a turntable.

The purpose of the room is a sitting room. Music, reading games if we have company.

I had the busy kitchen in our city home for years. Now everyone lives all over the country. My kitchen era is over.

If you want it? Leave it on the back wall. It avoids the bulk of the sides and the side view.

Turn table might be an issue .......and games maybe best at a breakfast table at the slider.

The feet and inches don't lie, and simply depend the number of people who shall want to sit. Even here..you'd be best with a single chair and something light to pull up to the armoire to sit. , tucked in a corner. Your "huge" isn't, actually : )
