Hi all,

I need to replace the threshold square near my front door due to water damage, but I want to make sure the new flooring looks intentional with the rest of my home. I'd like to only replace this section, not the entire floor, so I need a solution that transitions well into my existing wood floor.

The Space:

• Existing Floor: Engineered wood planks of varying widths, running perpendicular to the front door. I liked it because it looks kind of like a medieval floor.
• Damaged Section: The threshold square from the door to the front of the stairs, which I'd like to replace without redoing everything.
• Surrounding Area:
  • The rest of the wood floor
  • Beige carpeted stairs directly behind this threshold
  • Black, grey, or wood-colored furniture (which I’m open to painting if needed, because this isn't a design choice, it's just what I have). I have a small white shelf that blends in with the white walls, and one table that has dark greek legs, but it's not particularly noticeable.
  • White walls.
  • New front door will probably be wood-colored too (not installed yet)
  • Thinking about sage green as an accent color elsewhere in the house (but not here).

What I’m Considering:

• A dark blue/black wood-look material (LVP? Porcelain that looks like wood? Engineered wood?) for contrast. Not sure if it should be laid parallel to the rest of the floor, or some other fancy angle.
• A transition strip or border to make the change look intentional rather than a patch job.
• Tile or another durable material if it works with the rest of the space.

What I Need Help With:

• Best material for durability and water resistance.
• Color choice: Will a dark blue/black wood tone complement my existing wood floor and beige carpeted stairs? Should I go for a contrast or try to match?
• If it looks like wood, how should I lay it? Should I lay it all the way to the stairs, or just a square?
• Best way to transition this new section into the existing floor so it doesn’t look awkward.
