Before and After— what’s next? gothic advice please

Okay lovely people, I’m here for an update and to kindly ask for your opinions and advice on next steps.

To summarize, I’m revamping my living room and Im looking for a gothic/moody feel but not overcrowded with things. Hoping the vibe can be achieved with textures and shapes and patterns vs objects.

I’m attaching before (teal room) and my current after (black wall).

Next steps and advice—

Should I float the sofa as I have it right now or push it against the wall?

I’m looking to put some sort of bookshelf next to the tv— any suggestions?

New coffee table needed (currently showing my dining table for temp use haha)

What rug would fit the vibe?

All decor ideas welcome and appreciated to help me live my gothic fantasy!

Thanks in advance!

    Another couple of angles

The sofa position was much better in the before pics. If you have to keep it this way for some reason, then push it all the way against the back wall and all the way to the windows to reduce the amount it sticks out into the space.

I don't get gothic at all. I get modern furniture showroom. Do you have some inspiration pics of what gothic means to you? Maybe you have a different vision of it than what I do.

What's gothic about what you have? Your "gothic" is a mystery to us...we can't even tell which are the current pictures, but not one scrap of your furnishings suggest goth, or moody or.........sign us clueless. From this below to gothic? How?

    Clarify please?

The tiny space behind the sofa is not worth preserving. It feels out of place so push the sectional against the wall. I think your next move is an accent piece on the black wall with the TV. Since you like gothic how about an overly elaborate dresser with maybe metal cabriole legs in gold or silver to give it a bit of a modern feel to the gothic look? Staying on the reflective metal theme I would then choose a rug with gold flecks in it and a floor lamp maybe with a black shade and gold inside lining for instance.

I understand it’s not gothic yet, that’s the direction I’m going. All I’ve done so far is repositioned and repainted the walls— that’s why I’m here asking advice to go in that direction…

Thank you Lorraine, great ideas! I’ll gets out pushing the couch back, and start the look for an elaborate accent piece for the black wall 🤗

IMO first get an idea of either goth or maybe waht you want is color drnching . Right now a black wall does neither ,same as the furniture too and the white walls . I advise you to go on line and search for goth LRs and colordrenched ones to see what it is you like best then post those either here in comments or in idea books IMO if goth is the plan then new stuff .This says modern goth to me is that the aim

or this is color drenched more than goth IMO post pics please then we can help black stuff can go in many directions

Thank you for your input. I totally understand that my space doesn’t fully reflect the goth aesthetic yet. I’m still brainstorming ways to incorporate intricate details, ornate textures, and layers that will bring the gothic vibe to life. This is why I’m sharing my progress—so I can gather ideas and suggestions for those finishing touches. So far, I’ve removed the faux brick wall, done a bit of a paint reset, and, as mentioned in the original post, the dining table is just there temporarily as I’m waiting to sell it. The couch, however, will likely stay, and I’m thinking of ways to integrate it into my overall vision for the space.

For those of you who have suggestions for specific furniture, decor, or details, I really appreciate it. For anyone pointing out that this isn’t “gothic at all”—yes, I’m aware, this is ground zero… well, just above ground zero 😂. I’m excited to share the next steps as I continue building this out.

@Kendrah Great Suggestions! I'm absolutely going to use some of those! As for the couch, Im more stuck with it than anything-- I don't see it as a remotely gothic but hoping it'll still mesh somehow

My word for you is Wallpaper. Specifically flocked damask wallpaper in dark colors. It's moody, it's textured, it's goth, and it doesn't add clutter. It also stands a chance of tieing into to the couch.

Can you show the rest of the room so we can see how the gothic elements of the living room will connect to the other side of this room?

The only thing Gothic I see now is the color black on the walls:

    - You have too much solid -- you need artwork /mirrors in heavy gold frames.

    - You need to do something to that large expanse of window, but I don't know what.

    - You need a candle-abra hanging from the ceiling.

    - Since your sofa doesn't fit the desired look -- unless you're ready to replace it with an antique velvet settee with curved back and feet -- I'd add throws and pillows for the moment.

    - Likewise, your table doesn't say Gothic at all, but tables are a whole lot cheaper to replace than sofas.

    - Beware of adding much more black. It's such a rich, dark color -- you could go overboard easily.

What happened to the fireplace? The "after photos" don't have any fireplace visible. Is it a portable electric fireplace?

How about a huge fake fur throw for the sofa and a fabulous glitzy chandelier to start .
