Winter Survival Update

It looks as though most of the daylilies I planted in the fall have made it through winter. All the registered evergreens have survived, but how they will perform is another question. Two of my registered semi-evergreens - Doctor Handsome and Razor Eyes - are a no show, but they may just be slow emerging. Two evergreen seedlings that were only two fans are missing, but the rest of the seedlings of all foliage types look pretty good - especially the ones I brought in clump form. I'm surprised how well some of them have multiplied, despite last year's heat and drought, and being uprooted and planted late. The Perseus' Sandals seedling is up to 24 fans after that clump was divided into three parts. My best White Tooth seedling is now at 20 fans. The soil here is so rich that I'm excited to see what kind of stats it will produce.

I'm also anxious to see what plants that came with the house will look like. I have short yellow daffodils getting reading to bloom, a few tulips coming up, and what I think are hyacinths. I also have peonies growing next to my shed. I could never grow those successfully in Nashville. I'm also looking forward to finding out whether my weeping cherry tree will have pink or white flowers.

Nancy - My daffodils and weeping cherry have started bloomng.

The daffodils look like the Ice Follies I grew in Nashvlle - only shorter.

Spring weather will be key. Late freezes and dryness do a lot of harm. My best daylily year in recent years was 2022, in which the winter was like zone 5, with constant cold and snow cover, the spring had plentiful rain, and the summer was not overly hot, with substantial rain in June. It was a banner year.

I know you are exvited to see how all your plants perform! Having good soil is a definite plus. And plant surprise from previous owners can be fun. I know you are anxious to get your garden going.

That sounds really good.I am glad you will have peonies. They do need more cold than we get to do really well. IT is so good that most of them are doing really well.

My daffs and hyacinths are long past and the daylilies are growing well but no scapes yet.
