Bathroom Layout - Shower and Window

last year

Hi, we are renovating our small bathroom and are deciding on the layout of the shower/toilet. Room is 1.45m x 2.3m.

The sink and bath position are good, and constrained by the doorway, but we need to come to a decision on what wall to have the toilet and shower: having all on the sink wall or having the toilet (and therefore shower) on the opposite wall to the sink.

The issue with having the shower on the left wall is that you would be showering in the window - glass is frosted and we are on the 1st floor but is it still a problem? It would be preferable to have the shower on the right hand wall but the toilet would need to follow to let you step into the bath (and you walk directly into looking at the toilet).

There are some other pros and cons (the floor space available, plumbing considerations) but what are peoples thoughts? Is showering in the window an issue?

Thanks!

Where is the door on these drawings? Can it swing outward?

Is the window really that large? Can you of you stand in the shower and the other stand outside, take a pic, and post it?

You will need to be able to turn on the shower without getting drenched with cold water.

Scaled floor plan with all dimensions in imperial only measurements will help you get advice.

This tub layout and the toilet needs to move next to the vanity.

Leaving as is, creates a maze with narrow pinch points. You also want to be able to walk right up to the tub and turn the shower/tub controls on without straddling a toilet.

As far as the window, I would choose something more opaque than frosted. Maybe you can get frosted and a plastic film on the inside to block it more.

We rented a house while building, that had glass block windows in front of the shower, in the front of the house! I showered with the lights dimmed down all the way!

Yup. That's the only way you'll be able to access the shower valves from outside the shower. That shower glass has to swing out so you can access the valves without stepping into the tub. Better yet, keep yourself warm while showering and avoid getting the entire bathroom wet by installing a full-width, bypass shower door with the fix panel next to the toilet.

The floor plan layout shouldn't even be under consideration - all fixtures against one wall.

The window should either be changed to a transom above the shower surround, or removed. It is just not worth trying to seal, as windows are not made to shed water hitting them from the inside. Also, you cannot hide yourself no matter what semi-opaqueness you apply to the window, unless it is 100% opaque, you will give a show, and at 100%, you might as well not have a window.

I would opt for this layout:

Thanks for your opinions - we have decided to move the toilet to beside the vanity. That makes sense, and the plumbing outside is easier, so win-win.

The window is the window, we have no plans to change it other than possibly putting a blind or shutters in.

The difference seems to come down to access to the shower: if the shower is on the left hand side you have a nice walkway straight in (although the end of the bath is sloped so you would have to be stepping over the middle section slightly rather than right on the right hand side), it is also more aesthetically pleasing. We would have some trouble accessing the controls around the screen and the toilet.

If the shower is on the right hand side, you get easier access with the folded screen (the screen would need to fold outwards for you to step in) but less aesthetically pleasing. I do think you get a cleaner 'view' of the window, however. And you also have the added privacy.
