To prune or not to prune

I know it's early but I don't see much action (buds) coming forth. I see a few shoots emerging from ground level. Should I prune it back to those shoots or wait a while for growth on the top? Photo not great but you can sorta see not much going on. Thanks in advance.

You might miss the repeat bloom this season but otherwise, your clem should be fine.

It would be helpful to know what kind of clematis it is but none will be permanently damaged by pruning. I'd cut off the dead stuff and leave any newly emerging basal shoots to carry on.

Hello GG48- was hoping to hear from you as you are very knowledgeable about this type of plant. Neglected to say what it was - name on tag: "Multi Blue" Blooms twice a year. I will do as you recommend - the rabbits have already taken a small snip on one but there are a couple of others. Thanks again...

I never know what the difference is between the damaged stems and the ones that will have new growth. For several years I pruned a Type 2 down to the ground because everything looked dead and damaged in early spring, and I basically never get any flowers. It's probably best to wait and see what will have new growth.

I see new growth and healthy stems. I will try to find the tag indicating what it is!! Don't know offhand. Thanks to all.
