Husband needs an office update.

A few things-
-Keeping desk
-The glass/window on right of photo is a wine cellar
-he likes planes but doesn’t care to keep the plane decor.

Need:
-paint (possibly blue/black, wall/ceiling?)
-light (something unique- gold/black) $200 or less preferably
-file cabinet or maybe arch display case on far left by window. (Thinking walnut or black color)

Open to any and all ideas! I’ve been thinking about this for months! Appreciate all of your help!

Sorry the photos are full of clutter! 😵‍💫

Make sure to think about this space in terms of a total plan - not parts. We need unity and cohesiveness here! Please do not do or buy anything until you have an overall plan. The end result will be fastastic if you do it right. If you're going to be painting the walls and / or ceiling with black or blue paint, you'll have to think about letting in a lot of wall art in white or other light colors. Dark rooms are cool and moody, but you need to think about how the atmosphere will affect hubbys ability to work. Lighting will be another crucial element. No ceiling lights needed due to the fact that it may make this space look like a hospital!!! For starters, a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Another way to get light into the room is to add a mirror on the wall if you have a good reflection. Due to the clutter, storage may be another crucial issue to be addressed in this room. My motto is: one can never have enough closed storage. Open shelving is only for neat freaks!!! Not for me!

+1 to posting a floor plan with measurements.

Incorporate a credenza and wide file cabinet to corral some of the office contents currently visible.

Consider adding doors and roller blinds so you can close off the office when not in use to help hide the paperwork, etc. from view.

Start by boxing everything up so that the room is completely cleared of all the loose stuff. Remove the shelves from the wall. You said you are keeping the desk, so leave the desk in the room but remove everything else. Make a floor plan of the room with measurements and placements of door, windows, etc. so you know what size furniture will fit. Also, note the location of the electrical outlets on the plan. Then, decide what your husband's needs are: lots of file cabinets for paperwork? Or just one or two? A credenza or narrow table for printer, scanner or whatever peripherals he uses? A book shelf for books or magazine file boxes? I would think you'd need at least one of each of those furniture items. Look for some appropriately sized furniture -- e.g., a 4-drawer file cabinet, not a 2-drawer one; a 6- or 7-foot bookshelf, a long enough credenza, maybe with cabinets below for storage. There are many places that have those home office items in matching wood or paint color at various price points. Wood that matches the desk would be my first choice in whatever style that fits your house (modern; Mission style; etc.). Then start thinking about what color to paint the room and what kind of lighting he needs to be able to work comfortably. It looks like you have one overhead electrical box and presumably some electrical outlets on the walls; if you put the locations of electrical outlets on your floor plan you can determine where items like a desk lamp, floor lamp, the printer, the computer, etc. can be plugged in. You'll need to have that information in order to position the furniture. As for paint, I think a light color is best for a smallish room and if you want some color, you can add pictures on the walls. But decorating should be the last thing you do. Get the structure of the room figured out first. This is a great project!

Your hubby seems to enjoy planes and has a decent collection of model planes and items. They could be displayed better so that the planes are more visible and the other items are grouped so they look like a collection rather than random pieces.

I'd also suggest getting a rug that helps pull the furniture pieces together. Use the rug then to help create the color scheme. I played around with one that would incorporate some black. An idea would be to paint the wall behind the desk black/charcoal and the other walls a soft off white. If you displayed the airplanes on that black wall they would really stand out. Use a map or decal to balance out the model planes or do the collection across the entire back wall. The propeller could be hung above the wine cellar window. I'd also suggest paint that window trim off white to match the walls since the window across from it does not have trim.

Get a black lateral file to replace the one you currently have and set the copier on top of it. A nice sun shade would help reduce computer glare if that is an issue for your husband.

I suggest replacing the ceiling light with something less structural like a spuknik type light. A desk lamp and lamp on lateral file would be nice touches.

What are the changes that your husband wants? More closed-door storage? Storage with drawers? A second desk with drawers? Filing cabinet? Backdrop for Zoom?

A floor plan with all dimensions would certainly help, looks like storage is needed to help with the clutter.

You say you are keeping the desk but I don't see a desk. I see a table. Couldn't he use a "desk" desk?

Wow you all are beyond generous! I appreciate each one of you for taking the time to provide advice, feedback, and visuals! Amazing. Thank you! Attached is a mock-up of the floor plan with dimensions.
This is a home office, located in the basement.
We absolutely need closed storage- at least 4 drawers for file cabinets, and open to the printer being enclosed inside the storage too vs sitting on top.
Most of our house is modern/contemporary, which we love. The basement, however, is somewhat rustic, with a lot of wood, a barn wood wall, etc.
Definitely open to anything and everything, including paint colors!
Again, I appreciate all of you and the help!

Hahaha yes, it is a table, actually! I guess we could get a new desk?! Didn’t want to spend a ton of money on the remodel, but obviously down to if it will look better!

I think a floating table is fine, but you need storage against the wall. This setup would work very well in your space.

You can add wheels to that table desk when he wants to face the window. Just get him to clear out the whole current office of all the cluttery stuff. Get yourself to Ikea if possible and add your file cabinets and storage cabinets/shelves to the back wall. Going forward, everything should be contained in the storage cabinets.

If you are open to getting another desk, I think that would help the situation, because then you could get a desk that was rectangular, and narrower front to back. You could also get one that has some storage like a pencil drawer etc. Something like the Ainsworth from Crate and Barrel which is not super cheap but has some nice features -- three drawers plus 2 file-sized drawers. That would fit either under the window, or with its short side against the wine cellar window so as to be near an electrical outlet. There are companion pieces to the Ainsworth desk, like a book shelf, or you could get a close match in walnut with a bookshelf and credenza from Ikea

Those items would both fit if the desk were against the wine window as described above --credenza under the outside window and bookshelf in the niche corner.

An area rug and a rolling chair for the desk. No rolling desk, but definitely a rolling chair, and the rug would help to keep it from slipping out from under you when sitting down.

If you need file cabinet storage, you could possibly find a credenza that had file drawers, or move the gun safe to another room and put a file cabinet in that corner.
