Help please! Kitchen floor dilemma

last year

I am moving to a house that has this busy terracotta kitchen floor. We have to keep it, at least for a while. The kitchen cabinets are white and are staying. I want to replace the current wallpaper. The space is mostly open but am wondering what color to paint the walls - or should I go for a simple grass cloth or other wallpaper. Thanks for any help!

I would go all white! white walls white trim and white cabinets..the flooring is very unique it just needs to be the star!

I wouldnt be quick to change the counters either. They look to be in great condition, and they go well with the floors and cabinets. Again, no more white, or your kitchen will look like a surgical room. Pick a light color for your walls, and that wallpaper definitely has to go quickly.

may be in the minority, but I think the flooring is great. I would paint the walls white and let it be the star.

    - If you're in the minority, so am I. The flooring looks good and is a classic color and style. Yes, the color limits you a bit, but it's in no way offensive.

    - In all honesty, I wouldn't have installed it myself because tile is cold underfoot and hard on the knees and joints -- but since it's already installed and seems to be in good condition, I would keep it. I'd add nice floor mats -- maybe the gel type -- by the sink and stove, where you'll stand most of the time.

    - Note, too, that tile is really, really hard to remove.

    - However, I disagree about painting the walls white. Yes, you already have white cabinets and white spots on the floor, and I think you could over-do the white in a hurry.

I dont think the floors are what makes it appear so busy. Its that wallpaper, and other stuff in there. Counters are full and busy, and walls are busy, etc. I would remove all the wallpaper, and paint all walls, a nice lighter color.

Agree with all -- especially that the wallpaper's gotta go. What was the previous owner thinking?

    Nice color @simplynatural 😊

If the white could be toned down?

  • last year

Long wide jute rug in entry crane area to break up the expanse of tile?

I think the floor looks terrific in the view of the cabinets you posted! It's different and interesting and I think it looks very good with the creamy white cabinets. There's something about it that's happy and kind of energizing, makes me feel like I want to go dancing across the floor :0)

Ditch the wallpaper, paint all that a neutral and then see how you feel about the floor.

Just paint a lot of turquoise with a bit of red here and there, and roll with it.

Gosh I just noticed the black and white checkerboard floors in the other area. I’m sensing a style disconnect from spaces….not to make you feel bad! Just to point out that having a long term vision is smart. Maybe investing least amount of $$ until you do (definitely no counters until you have the whole vision worked out).

I like the floor too. This kitchen made me swoon when I first saw the photo & had me pining for terra cotta floors.

  • last year

If you like color, then maybe try to pick up the terracotta in the tile. Something like SW spiced cider 7702 or Oak Creek 7718.

  • last year

Definitely keep the floor and just change the wall paper to something that will complement the color or just paint the walls In a nice complementary

Grey is passe. Plus IMHO it doesn’t work with the flooring.

Ive done tons of DIY to my hoise tommake it ”mine”. In my humble opinion I’d go with the flow instead of trying to ”put lipstick on a pig”. Aged terecota layered tipe is in intself very expensive and yields a classic Mexican Hasienda feel. why not go with it. You could do freco painting detail for the walls using ocres, burnt oranges, maybe pale blues in a classic motif (easiet to do yourself than you think, or you coupd hire a local painter to actually paint and it just slather some coolor on your walls. Aslo yout cabinets vould benefit from an antique glaze (not a mono color soray paint, but careful darker hues to accent the shapes you have. In short, you could transform that space for very little money but with a kene eye for authentic detail.

Paint walls Dunn Edwards White Heat or SW Alabaster.

My initial thought was same as many comments, to paint walls same as cabinets. we had saltillo throughtout a house, loved it. agree, no more gray, its OUT. and doesnt go with oranges, browns in floir. dont put rugs down, they are disruptive.

your last pisted pux looks nice.maybe switch cabinet pulls to same color as cabinets?its difficult to see what they are.it would make a still cleaner look.

What a gorgeous kitchen (with the exception of that wallpaper)! Ditch the wallpaper, don't worry about the floors, cabinets or countertops. Paint a cool color. White with blue undertones or light blue itself. Maybe a sage but you don't want gray bc it will be too dark. Live with the one change of the wallpaper gone for a bit before you decide next steps. Look through house pics for style you like whether it be Spanish or Italian bc of the floors.

I disagree with statements that grays are "out. " It's said often here on Houzz, but only by those who follow trends, imo. I think the darker gray shown by Beverly is quite awesome! I'm not a designer, but what I see in her mockup is that the wall color balances that of the floors. When I looked back a second time, I saw the gray siding just beyond the slider, and I like that the wall color led my eye to it. "Outside-in" connection. If looking for it, Beverly's photo was first one posted. (I'm having trouble re-posting it.)

I agree, its too busy. But many people don't realize how easy it is to get into massive debt right after moving in. Personally, I would stain/paint the grout and live with it for awhile. Go a bit lighter than the terra cotta and the stupid tan diamonds will stop being so prominent. If you go too light, like just a bit darker than the diamonds, it will look like a grid and be just as annoying, so be careful with the color. Then come back to it in a few years after you've lived with it all and have a good grasp of how/what you really want to change in the house as a whole.

The tile looks like it has some white little squares in it and you cabinets are white you can paint the walls white

  • last year

I would add some black rugs here and there or under a table if you have a table in that kitchen

I am still in the all white walls camp! look at adjoining room black and white flooring..white walls and trim…I would add a black countertop on island and all white lighting..change all hardware to black..unlined white linen roman shades..white upholstered chairs black table..it could look so bright and cheerful with a touch of Paris added in!

  • last year

I would keep the floor, paint and change the hardware on the kitchen cabinets. I would use black handel's on the doors and black knobs on the draws

  • last year

When I said paint I meant the walls not the cabinets. Actually the paint color that Hamfast picked is pretty good, but do white ceilings.

You can never go wrong with wood floors (real wood, NOT laminate). They are softer on the feet and on dropped glass than the hard tile there now (which will not be easy to pry up if it was installed properly). Definitely get rid of that wallpaper asap! Paint the wall white and then decide what color - any pastel would be nice. Grasscloth wallpaper collects dust and in a kitchen some grease/oil from the air - not what you want. I would consider replacing the low-end white cabinets with particle board with some nice ones in real wood.

You can paint tile, even floor tile now with all the paint choices they have these days...paint those little white squares a matching grout color and make them disappear! LOL You can also paint over wall paper if the seams are glued down and dont appear to be separating from each other. If so, a little glue repair or spackling over chips or torn pieces will still look fine. It will save you time and money! This is where you can choose whatever color you like to contrast floors and trim. I am a paint contractor and do it all the time and it looks beautiful with no complaints from clients. Get paint and primer in one. NO satin...matte or flat only. You can also paint cabinet hardware with spray paint to give an updated look. : )

I had saltillo for 25 years when we moved. it was never ” hard on my feet.” loved it. i disagree with painting gray. its drab, not a warm, inviting color. the off white walls is what id stick with, natching counters.i think the floor is great.

  • last year

Thank you all! I will paint the walls in a neutral color and change the cabinet pulls, then see re the countertops. I do like the idea of having black as a counterpoint- (and to tie in the white and black marble from the entryway-)- whether pulls or countertops and or chair cushions. Also of course the items on the counters won’t be there. You have given me some wonderful ideas and direction!

  • last year

Also the cabinets are very high end custom cabinetry. The backsplash is Italian tile.

A lighter color grasscloth would be beautiful and make the space keeping the.floors feel very organic in style. I would make sure the grass cloth does not get near the stovetop(grease and stain). You can always update pulls and or faucet and get a nice kitchen update for not too much money. Don't go with what is in or out , go with things you love.

I have always liked these crackle knobs and they might blend more - I wonder if going with black will be too 'spotty' and just add more visual chaos....

Yikes…it is way too busy to me. The wallpaper as you already stated is going. However, they were on the right track with having black in the room. I would change the cabinet pulls to black and find interesting, artwork with lots of black to hang. Perhaps the radiator under the window black also. As it is, there is no interest in this room. Granite countertops will add “movement.”

  • last year

Another thought. All the white framing for the windows, I would do those black also, or a rich dark color. I think that may be one of the problems in that room. There is too much white.

  • last year

Be very very careful with black. Sparingly is best in this kitchen. This is pretty comprehensive with good examples.

I love your floor! Can you provide more views of the walls with wallpaper from a distance? Do you have something going on interesting with the ceiling? I see something yellow up there maybe? Also, can you provide any hints about your home color scheme?

  • last year

LOVE the floor AND the wallpaper. I think painting the walls white will be predictable. Your kitchen is unpredictable and unique but also very classy.

When I read @Elizabeth Williams comment I suddenly envisioned dark green walls as a background to all your beautiful plants. With your glass wall and ceiling, it could look like a fantasy greenhouse. What do you think of that concept?

  • last year

Does the lighting in the room all use the same color temperature? The lighting color looks inconsistent in the photos.

On the kitchen side - you posted that the cabinets are white but to me they look off-white with warmer (yellower) lighting.

On the dining/window side - the lighting and white trim looks cooler (whiter) to me. Maybe its the impact of the natural light.

  • last year

I'm thinking up lights by the window wall would be so much better in this room than the can lights on the beams.

  • last year

The cabinets are white- just shadow making bits look darker-lighter.

  • last year

So is this photo from the listing? You aren't in the house yet?

  • last year

The wallpaper does not work and has to go! I visualized a nice sage / suede green on that wall. As far as the floor goes, I have lots of runners in my kitchen and absolutely love them still after 25 years! They are soft and warm on cold winter days and easy to vacuum or steam clean as needed. You could get some coordinating rugs that would add a lot to the room.

I would move the cranes right outside onto the porch and maybe move the plants now on the counter over to the window sill. I'd put the bigger plant (between the birds now) to the left of the door to the outside or even outside on the patio to open up the floorplan. It looks like someone has a walker, and I think it would be beneficial to open up the area.

  • last year

The wallpaper is too busy and doesn’t work with the rest; do I see a yellow ceiling? If so, that also must go.

The good news is painting is a cheap thing to redo if you decide you do not like the color chosen, especially if the wall paper was installed correctly, on drywall that was at least primed as opposed to raw.

I rented an apartment with terracotta floor tile and white cabinets, the counters were also white and shockingly, because I would have thought it was too much orange tones, but I actually liked it, the walls were like a dark terracotta not quite rust, campbells tomato soup almost. I did have 2 walls with a big window facing north and one facing west, so the natural lighting really helped, without it, I do not think I would have liked it at all. That being said, I say think Mediterranean color schemes or Mexico, both parts of the world have worked with terracotta colors for centuries. If you want to go more modern a deep charcoal grey for the walls could work or something bolder like a deep eggplant or green that is almost black, with the amount of natural light you have, you can definitely go with a darker statement color for the walls since it looks like everything else is neutral. If you do go light, make it a rich but muted buttery yellow.
