Quality concern – orders of roses from David Austin

last year

is anyone else habing problems with the roses they sent out this year? One failed to leaf out. I order 2 Evelyn and they each developed canker once they started growing. I have never had canker before but like RRD am always on the lookout for it. I have been patienly waiting for Evelyn to be offered again so it is very dissappointing.

One of the 3 Evelyns I got from DA has serious cane die back already. I just trimmed the black parts off yesterday with hubbys help with one of the canes, which was super thick. He has more hand strength than I do lol. Anyhow, I had planted it and it had started leafing out then all of a sudden, the canes just started dying back for no reason. It has good soil good, drainage, & was watered properly. We even got lots of rain and the other roses are all happy except this one. I hope it straightens itself out. It only has a few canes now and one is short!

I have been using the regular miracle grow soil. My daughter gave me 2 bags of Organic Miracle grow soil for my birthday, along with a few potted trees. I have been afraid to use the MG Organic so the bags are still just sitting there haha! I have read a few dreadful reports of people getting landfill items in that soil including pieces of diapers. I dont know if its true but ewww! I watched a few videos comparing all kinds of potting soils and MG Organic one was one of the worst performers. I was gonna, maybe, throw it into one of the large raised beds as long as I dont see anything really gross in it. Of course, I am not mentioning any of this to DD lol. I can't understand why the Organic MG would be worse than the regular, it seems like it should be better. Strange.

Sultry, I use Black Gold Potting Soil. It's very high quality and it grows great hot peppers and other potted plants. I don't know if you can get the Black Gold brand down your way, though. Diane

I have an Evelyn which is doing well, albeit a little dieback and a LEH, which has leafed out but again had some dieback. I have noticed this year’s roses have been larger so maybe its just the cultivar. I would expect the newer releases to be better.

My order supposed to come soon. Looks like they also experienced some crown galls problems this year.

I cant recall when I last lost a rose, though not all thrived certainly. I wonder if climate had an effect at Tyler, DA. I live in Texas and we have experienced some colder than normal days over the last several years. I guess it is global warming. heehee. I plan to call DA. I will send an update if relevant.

I do not think the problems or lack there-of relates to our gardening practices. I have a new garden so ordered 50ish roses. Many others from Austin and grafted bare root from Grace. These 3 are the only ones with issues. Evenlyn is such a strong growing rose I have hopes she will recover.

Three out of the sixteen austins that I received in March are looking pretty dead. The rest are stunning me with their vigorous, healthy growth and thick, green canes. Unfortunately the three that are looking bad are Jude, Brother Cad, and Hyde Hall, all of which are out of stock. I'm going to ask for a refund. They've been in the ground two weeks, which doesn't seem like that long, but compared to the others, they seem so unhealthy.

My evelyn rose from grace died in July last year from die-back and this is my DA evelyn as of today. Its heartbreaking. I babied this rose for a whole year. I planted this the same as all my other DAs. What sucks is that they won’t give me another Evelyn. This is literally the redneck style contraption I made to save this stupid rose.

Where are you located? Arizona? There are some places selling Evelyn.

Is the contraption built to keep animals away?

Im in Arizona so I will look around, thanks. Yes, my chickens and dogs have a rose munching problem, but I was also trying to give it a little more shade due to the heat wave.

    Two things I can suggest:

1.) buy some chicken wire and build a cage so that animals can’t touch the new growth and 2.) maybe use shade cloth to protect the rose and give it a deep watering.

I feel for you on Evelyn, hoping it can rebound for you.

Thank you :) I will try it
