Fernston's First Scapes Are Up

last month

I found the first scapes making appearance on Fernstone today. I did not find any other scapes, but the plants are looking very good.

Debra, Perseus' Sandals has 16 fans this year and Bubble Gum Queen has six or seven, I don't quite remember which.

The Snowball trees are beautiful and the daylilies are opening up nicely. So, of course, next week we may have a frost.

The first Clematis opened today also. It is supposed to be mid to high 80s this week and drop down to 60s and lower 70s next week. That is Alabama for you.

You will be able to retain your crown for first bloom! I took such care in covering my rogue scape when my tree limb was being cut and my son knows how I feel about my daylilies so he was extra careful when cutting the limb. However, never count out cats in the garden. My sweet half grown cat loves to garden with me. When I uncovered the plant he thought the scape was a fabulous plaything and proceeded to pop every bud off!! We will probably be having many talks during the season!!

How exciting to see your first scape! I'm glad the Perseus' Sandals seedling and Bubblegum Queen have multiplied so well for you. I had an amazing increase on the PS seedling and some increase on Bubblegum Queen too. Most of the plants I brought here are not showing an increase.

thank you. Kate and Debra. Kate, I can so sympathize with you. I had a couple of brother half grown cats/kittens who loved to play in the lilies and they managed to totally destroy my Stealth Bomber clump. I did replace it, and it is doing well but has yet to attain the strenght it had before their episode. Some of the feral cats (adults) even now like to lay on the liles or hide behind clumps. When I am putting out cardboard, Spatter will come and lay on it before I pt down mulch, and Scooter and Ebony like to wait in among the4 lilies when it is time to be fed.

Debra, I wasn't surprised at Perseus Sandals increasing so nicely but Bubblegum Queen is really showing out. I had to quickly move the six or seven plants that were in the very front bed when the front porch extensions were happening and the plants I moved seem to be very happy; Neon Flamingo and Catasrophe Waitress especially look much better already. which surprised me.

Kay: Nice to know your seeing your first scape. I'm sure you will be seeing more. Looking forward to seeing your garden in bloom. Have hey finished your house project?

We just had a freeze here overnight after days of 80's and then temps dropped downward and rain, rain, rain. Finally yesterday some sunshine. I will be doing pick-up sticks today with two layers of fleece, hat and gloves. More rain moving in here for the next two days.

Thank you, Julia. the clematis have started blooming and we also finally got some much needed rain. We also had a cool down after near 90s but only a slight frost for a coup[e of nights. I see we may have a blackberry winter later this month, as usual, but while Fernstone keeps adding scapes, none of the others have made it yet. I wish they would sloe down, but they never do. I added several of Judy Davisson's plants last fall and a couple more of Reimer's plants too so I am looking forward to the blooms.

WE are back to 70 today, so last night's frost ois just a memory and this was perfect weather today. I am about to plant a raised bed my sson-in law built for me, but it will just be vegetables.

He is still working on the house. He is going to put in a new set of sliding glad doors out to the deck since the current set has lost its seal and always appears dirty. He is also going to put up new shutters. And, the bathroom needs a few changes too. There haven't been any changes in a while, so a lot needed doing.

Thank you, Sherry. The rain that we finally got improved the daylilies but Fernstone is still the only one with scapes. The clemats are blooming now but just beginning to bloom.
