It depends on the wood specie. Which wood specie do you have?

If you have red oak you may be able to treat the wood with Bona Red Out or Ciranova Pink Blocker 2C Link. and their reactive stain. Red and white oak when flat cut exhibit open grain that will darken. You can reduce that with an opaque filler stain you can wipe into the grain and let cure before a matte clear water poly topcoat like Ciranova EcoFix Plus. Sanding may be necessary. You can end up with a look similar to European Oak which doesn't have the open grain as much. You can stain it any tone you want.
