color/light suggestions please!

last month

Currently in the process of powderoom update. Tile installed, mirror, wallpaper and vanity. Trying to choose between 2 light fixtures. The gold leaf one is pretty large (23 inches) for a 5x5 bathroom. We have wainscoting/board and batten for lower half. Originally planned to paint it BM super white, with ceiling BM Moore Hale Navy. Trying to decide if I should go hale navy for wainscoting and ceiling…

Will you have sconces too or just the ceiling light? Both of those will give off a lot of light ‘play’ and will create a lot of shadows. Are you ok with that? What is your ceiling height? Posting the link for both fixtures would be helpful. Also, have you color matched the Hale Navy to the vanity in real life? Looks ok on screen but just checking that you did that.

The navy will be more striking against the penny tile - I say go navy (but make sure it’s cohesive with the vanity). I’m not sold on the light fixtures with the wallpaper just yet.

10" diameter is big enough for a ceiling fixture.

the color of the ceiling will affect the lighting in the room... will it be the only source of light? sconces? natural light from a window?

Was hoping to be only source, but left wires for scone above if it wasn’t enough

I am concerned about the lighting especially if you do the navy throughout. The Anthropology one won’t be enough light with the all dark room / no sconces or vanity light. The Foundry one is a bit overpowering scale wise (but the light would be fine for the room with the dark paint). Not sure either would be ok if one wanted to groom at the mirror. But since this is a powder room that may not be needed. Can you post a photo of the wallpaper with the hale navy and the tile? Maybe you want to use that 3rd color that’s in the paper (hard to see)…then the vanity is the pop of navy and the wainscot is still a color that relates to the paper (but isn’t white). The solid white floor might be best balanced with a white ceiling. Pics of the space with the wallpaper would help.

Thank you so much for your help! My concern was the 2 lights weren’t enough in the Anthropologie light, and the other one might overwhelm the space.

The white shown is BM super white, darker is hale navy, and lighter blue is BM Blue nose

I had even considered the bottom the light beige in the wallpaper.

Put the navy on the wainscoting; paint the ceiling white. There are a lot of smalls(tile, bead board, wallpaper) suggest you not mimic in the ceiling light. Go softer in design with a semi-flush light.

I like that a lot thank you!

I would paint the wainscoting the same color as the background of the paper and use the navy for the ceiling and trim so it ties the ceiling with the rest of the room.

Thank you for putting that together!

If it’s not too late I’d suggest going with the lighter blue as I feel the navy is overpowering the wallpaper. The blue nose might work - also look at Early Morning. This way the vanity stands out more. I do like the light that elcieg linked. And I do think it would be nice to have a light over the mirror. This is just one option…lastly, you can have the ceiling fan cover painted to match the ceiling and don't forget to do the trim and interior of the door to the room in the same final color.

After looking at your photo again, Blue nose looks a tad bright to me - best to get a few options in that range if you like the lighter blue route.

Please pay attention to what Lori Sawaya says about not repeating a dark ceiling color in paint on other painted finishes in the same room.

I like early morning! Agree the blue nose was too bright. Are you recommending blue for inner door and trim?

This one is kinda challenging - no wonder you have questions.

First, Hale Navy looks like it's the right color, and we all know it's a gorgeous color.

What to do with the lower half of the wall is the pickle.

I'm tempted to say go all Hale Navy - color drench it.

Because if you drench, the distribution of color guidelines are off the table.

But getting the lighting right will be crucial, and you got a lot of great insight about that so far.

Yes for blue inner door and trim (that would be the drenching like Lori and I are recommending) - and since you have already painted the ceiling the navy the easiest route will be to stay with it. I was staring at the photo of your finishes and the lighter blue just seemed fresh to me with the floor tile/gold, etc. and would seem to not cut the room in half as much as the navy will do. Either way it will be nice! Post pics when you are done:)

You guys have been sooo helpful! I hired a designer to help with this, but that’s how I ended up with the gushy gold light, lol. Pics so far. Had to make a decision quick before the plumber installed the vanity today, and I’m loving the hale navy. The ceiling is the lighter blue, that I didn’t think would go as well. I may just go for it with color drenching the hale navy. I love the light suggestions and need to make a couple returns!

Looking good - your penny tile installation looks seamless which is always tricky.
