Why eventually? I like what you did for the ceiling and you're already almost there. It sounds difficult to me to add on to the existing cabinets. Consider floating shelves instead that would give a similar look and is an easy DIY.

You need an ottoman in place of the coffee table....use side tables for drinks.

Paint the walls a moody color, hang some paintings and illuminate them with frame lights or spotlights. Very dramatic against the dark paint and will let the room expand visually. Table and floor lamps with solid black lampshades give a very nice vibe. Consider track lights.
