Front entrance help

last month

This is the front entrance to our home. I would like there to be an obvious distinction between the driveway and the front entryway. Maybe a large patio (concrete or other) with greenery or shrubs on the side? Where its gravel at the front of the photo by ugly flower bed, should I plant grass there?

I'd vote for a path in a garden, but I'm not getting the impression you're a gardener and do you need any of that gravel to turn around in your driveway?

I'd probably put some pavers in a path and surround them with a groundcover. You could find a native groundcover, which would be better, but creeping thyme would work for someone who is not a gardener. It will just cover up the gravel.

There’s really not enough room there for much planting, especially for shrubs unless they’re very small ones right up against the house. Which usually isn’t a good idea since you don’t want them rubbing against the house anyway.

Seems to me that you need some hardscape there. Is there a concrete stoop at the door already? It’s not big enough if there is. I would build one from the house almost to the beginning of the garage, and then coming out from the door about 6’. You could set a big pot of flowers on it somewhere to give you some color.

I actually love to garden and would love a cottage style garden here, but completely ignore the front of the house anymore because it seems pointless until I can do a patio or something. The sad looking garden was an attempt a few years ago to give separation from the driveway to the house. There’s lots of space on the left side of the driveway so we do not need space here for turnaround, etc. I like the idea of a large patio and possibly larger roof overhang. It’s currently only gravel and dirt, which ends up inside the house nonstop

Flagstone will do wonders. So easy to DIY a curved patio and walkway.

You will have to level the dirt...so while you are at it lay the stone to grade with the driveway and front door threshold.

Fill in the spaces between stones with rock and some creeping Thyme as suggested.

A nice lawn and groundcover surrounding everything with a shortcut of stepping stones from the garage. A planter bed next to the house.

Here is a rough sketch of the concept..exact layout TBD.
