Needing help on how to update/stain brick exterior

last year
last modified: last year

The brick on our home needs updating and I'm leaning toward stain. I'll also like to paint/update the upper cedar shake on the top. The brick can't be cleaned (the color that was baked on comes off) and when the grout was repaired it didn't dry in the same shade. The house was built in 1929 so it's time for an update - even cedar shake is original. It looks really tired.

When you post the pics in a comment wait until they are no longer grayed then hit submit . We cannot help without pictures. Take close ups of the places that are different too,

If your existing brick finish is not stable, how do you expect to apply a stain and not have it wash off?

Maybe you should consider a German Mortar Schmear on the brick.

Good point on the unstable brick. It doesn't wash off with a hose but with pressure washing it does start to lighten/come off.... Hmmm.

This yellow brick house reminds me of yours--very charming.

    Suggestions:

--Keep the yellow brick, imperfect as it seems to you.

--Paint all the trim, siding, pillars, garage doors taupe, a little darker than this:

The garage door taupe would be just about right for your house.

Note the stone steps--very similar to stone you have, which you should echo.

Paint your door a deep red or deep teal:

So pressure washing can damage bricks. this might be why the color changed.

I am hoping that its stain on those cedar shakes, but, cedar is much better stained than it is painted. If you must do something to your brick, I would use a brick stain, not paint. You can buy some and try it in some inconspicuous spot, or some old bricks, to make sure you like the color you picked. I like the teal door above with your color brick, but, door would have to be decided, once you pick your color schemes. Your house is adorable.

I would paint the shakes, posts, siding and trim the golden color that is there now. Leave the brick alone.

White front door and its trim, and white window boxes.

    The garage looks fine.

Thanks for the like...now I'm second guessing the front posts...they are so nice in white.

German schmear or white wash, either creamy trim to match bricks or black trim, wood accents.

I never considered white washing the landscape bricks. Thank you for the thoughts.
