Am not sure if the carpet i just got goes with my furnishings.

I think the rug does not go with the black and white chairs. The chairs and art are more modern looking. Maybe try the pottery barn rug below. I attached the link. Use black pillow on the couch. I would go with the natural/black color. It is a very pretty room.

If you can return or move to another room, suggest a subdued/interesting rug that has a touch MCM feel; your art will pop and I think the room will feel much more connected.

I'd keep the rug and sofa and remove the black and white chairs. Or remove the rug and keep the sofa and chairs. The chairs and rug just don't work together.

But a solid rug in the same color as the sofa isn't going to look great either.

    Maybe something like these:

IMO the rug, sofa and the rest of the room coordinate fairly well. What doesn't coordinate are the black and white chairs.

Not with the chairs for sure.

I actually think the carpet, sofa, and art work really well together they all have a nice layered, feel that still looks intentional. The one thing that feels out of place is the black and white chairs. They introduce a completely different style and pattern that competes with everything else. Swapping those out for something more in line with the palette and textures of the rest of the room would pull it all together!

Sorry but as well as the area rug works with your sofa, it doesn't work with the pattern on the chairs.

IMO a larger scale or smaller scale pattern is required. Patterns doen't have to match , but they cannot fight one another.

    See examples below.

Wow! thanks so much. im going to go rug shopping!

Like others, I don’t think the rug works with the black and white pattern on the chairs.

I’d change the chairs out rather than changing the rug. The style of the chairs don’t belong in this room

After seeing several of the rug possibilities, the chairs still don't work. They are too bright white.

Its better with the new rug, ill get new chairs when i can and go back with the original rug. t

I think the chairs could work if you tossed a couple of white cushions on the couch to bring the eye around the room with the lighter color. It would just balance the room.

I thing the brown is too dark for the room.

The rugs I showed your were from Rugs-Direct.com under the category of GOLD or BLACK.

Sorry I totally disagree. I think the new rug looks great! The black bookcase and the coffee table are dark and the new rug grounds those two pieces nicely. The room is very cozy.

Sorry Bev… I don’t like any of your suggestions you post here. I like that this rug is quite neutral in terms of pattern because he’s got quite a distinctive piece of art over the couch… as I recall. I think the shag adds a nice textured detail to the room and interest without dominating the space, which is small.

I found this chair. does it go better?

  • last year

    That chair looks better. Definitely.

I don’t think the gray rug works

Love that chair! And you can use the original rug with it. Not a fan of the new one you got.

  • last year

Chair is better…that will help determine where you can go with your rug choices. Once you get the patterned chairs out of there you’ll have more options for your rug. I didn’t think you were thinking about replacing the chairs right away! If your chairs are more neutral you will have a lot more freedom with the rug.

Sorry, I don’t think your original rug works at all with the MCM vibe in the room. It tends toward traditional imo.

Mixing modern with traditional is done all the time, and is very sophisticated.

Well I still like the shag rug as a choice….It’s not gray, it’s more of a taupe brown and cream mix on my monitor. For all the reasons that I posted above, I think it’s a good choice.

  • last year

It’s a well-behaved rug… Not every rug has to be a statement piece.

The “ new” chair looks like it could be uncomfortable. I can never tell from a photo. But my point is, do t just click on chairs for colors or whatever and buy them. There’s no point in having “ 2 chairs “, just for superficial looks to somehow make a seating arrangement in the right color , that are poor quality and/ or uncomfortable.
Sure , if you almost never have anyone sit in them, sometimes one gets e - a small “ occasional chair” for a brief visit from guest, but often that could be accomplished by a small dining chair or folding chair.

  • last year

Excellent point about the chair! Furniture should always be seat tested. In person. And consider who you usually have visiting you and sitting in them… If they’re 6 foot football players, or your old grandmother. Makes a difference.

  • last year

You get a slightly deeper chair with a decorative pillow, then both the football player (without pillow) and the grandmother (with pillow) can sit comfortably.

  • last year

I did test the chair out and it was pretty comfy! it is an expense though. Im a little torn. will keep looking.

  • last year

I do like the black and white chairs…they have so much personality. Are they comfortable? If you chose one of the rugs Beverley picked out, I think you would have a good look.

  • last year

    They are super comfortable

I actually think the white chairs look fine with this shag rug and add a couple of light coloured pillows on the couch… Bob’s your uncle.

The black and white chairs are fabulous and the shag definitely works. Just add a black or a black and white pillow to your mix.

Your sofa is not as yellow as the ones I’ve used here and your throw pillows are also a more muted shade - but hopefully this illustrates the general idea.

You have great taste and a nice space!

    Best wishes.

Love love the shag in this room!

If going with a solid shag, suggest one that pulls things together a bit better and adds more vibrancy.

Looks great! that's the original rug--I knew it would work with the sofa and those leather chairs! It all flows beautifully!

Every looks good except those black and white chairs. But I see you replaced the chairs and it looks perfect!
