What are you doing Tuesday 41525

I went Friday and bought hostas from my local Ace. I had my pick as they had just come in that morning. I left with 6 and did not make a dent. Monday, yesterday, I went back, and do you know some hosta head came in and just about bought them out. The one I wanted was still there. There was an odd assortment of hosta some grown and some have not even piped out yet, but you can see the promise.

I am still getting the frames done. Moving slow as my youth is on vacation right now.

Pretty much not too much else is happening. I am out there pulling early weeds only to find out that if you pull one two will come back. Kind of like the 'grey hair' promise of my mom. The first set of Bluebirds has fledged. They know how to fly but not land. I have a sitting goose right now and by the look of it will soon have baby ducks too.

So, what is happening in your world this week?

Have a great day everyone!

New hostas include Halcyon, Broadband, August Moon, Guacamole, Gold Standard, Brother Stefan, Enterprise and Fire and Ice.

Over achiever Liberty came out like a bullet. 2 scapes already.

Hanging my hummingbird feeder for the first time! Always on Tax Day in my part of the world.

I have been dividing my Liberties as they are multiplying like rabbits. I cut chunks off of two yesterday and planted them in patio pots. Will get some other things in the (big) pots too, like some type of trailers.

    scapes in April???..wow..

when my energy picks up I'll be out picking up sticks..it's my lifetime job..😜

I stumbled on to what I think is Snake Eyes at Walmart. It was on a cart that had hosta on it, but they were solid green.

I gave up on all those plants that were frozen in our 15 degree night. I dumped Irish Luck and the whole crown was rotted. It still had roots. I lost Krossa Regal, Royal Standard, Elegans and probably Guacamole. Guacamole is so tiny, I doubt it will make it.

BUT, I bought a nice one to replace it. Since it's one of my favorites, I won't give up on the little bit that has survived the freeze (so far, at least).

Other than that, I have two I Spy quilts to finish. My late Spouse has had two great-grands since his passing. One quilt just needs a label and the other only has a finished top, so a long way to go

    bkay.

I am tidying up my garden bit by bit. We got some bad news last month. Our sweet dog has lymphoma. The vet says that she only has a couple months to live.

utog..I'm sorry about your dog 😪..she looks great..she was blessed to have you as her owner..

Not much happening here lately. Several hostas are showing new shoots as I clean up all the leaves. I doubt I've lost many, if any but the past few years most have sufered from tree roots. I can't fathom trying to dig them all up and clean the roots. I do a few a year but it only lasts for a couple years.

I have sprayed some critter deterent on the new shoots and spread a little milorganite around.

Hung out the humming bird feeder, grape jelly & oranges for the orioles. I think too early but better than late.

The owls have left the nest but do return to roost and hunt the adjacent fields. I go out every day to try to spot them.

Paula - Buying plants already? our nurseries are not even open yet.

Paula, that’s a good hosta haul! I’m starting to see mine coming up, but we have a few cold nights ahead so I don’t want them to leaf out yet. Yours are so far along already. I like hearing your bird updates. I have Robins fighting with each other over nesting areas.

Bkay, that’s too bad you lost hostas to the erratic weather. I’d miss Irish Luck.

Undertheoaksgardener, I’m so sorry to hear about your sweet dog. It’s heartbreaking to face losing them. I hope she feels good for as long as possible.

Old-dirt, that’s so nice to have owls around. I haven’t heard my screech owl in many months. I figure it moved on.

I was at one of my local nurseries this morning. I resisted buying any hostas because I have an order coming. I got some spring blooming plants because I know they won’t be there long, but I’ll wait for a sale for some others.

Deer are being pests and eating too many of my flowers. I won’t plant any more tulips, that’s for sure, but they’re eating the smaller bulbs, too. If only we could communicate with them better. I don’t mind when they eat the weeds.

Happening now more daffodils and hellebores.

Undertheoaks, sorry to hear about your furry family member😢 You are both lucky to have found each other. The best and worst days are when you bring them home and when you lose them.

UTOG - I'm so sorry about your beloved pet. They are certainly a light in our lives.

With me possibly due to heavy mulch I have minor bulbs and daffodils out, some pulmonaria started, hellebores and early primula. There are hosta pips under mulch but am happy the still sleeping.

I lost good number of hostas that were in the pots, lesson learned, not to transplant anything in the fall. I run out of energy trying to plant out late.

Utog, sorry to hear about your puppy, I like you making memories... My munchkin is on his 9th life, yesterday I was sure today is the day and he woke up and ate some food yet- yay to another day!

Love everyone birds pictures! We used to have an owl but not seeing it lately.

Littlebug, every time I divide or transplant hosta it reverts to it juvenile form. I love when it gets older and develop all those crinkles and wrinkles so unless I must I want it to stay in place forever. Do you overwinter your pots? I have little luck in new location it seems.

    Sandy, love that double hellebores!!!!

Thanks for the emotional support. Here are some lovelies yesterday and today: Arisaema, Bletilla orchid, Cutting Edge, and Lemontini with neighbor Sally dog in background.

You got some really nice ones Paula. Liberty is wonderfully happy. Nice hearing about the bluebirds.

utog I am glad she is still able to enjoy herself. It is such an incredible bond we form and my heart is breaking.

old_dirt the owl & owlets are amazing. Lucky you to watch the process and thank you for sharing.

Lisa such beautiful plants. I am not looking forward to spraying every 2 weeks to keep the deer away from so many plants. A lady gave me a bunch of tulip bulbs and the deer ravaged them since they were up before anything else needed protection.

lindalana I hope your munchkin has many more days with you.

Looking good utog. I had a pot of Bletilla for years, they are so pretty.

I took a break from work and went outside for a bit. Lots of stuff pipping - yay! - and lots of early pippers that are just mush now. Hoping they will send up new pips, sigh. Like many of you, the unseasonably warm weather followed by a couple of hard freezes did me no favors.

Utog, my heart breaks for you. We just had lay to rest Kibble, our almost 20 year old cat.
She began life as an outdoor cat but came to be a loving indoor cat. She was healthy and showing no problems whatsoever. On April 2nd I saw that her back leg was slipping out from under her. She was walking wobbly and kind of in one direction, to the right. I knew something bad was going on we got her to the vet who basically said it was a vestibular issue happening….The issue was in the brain. We had to make the tough decision to let her cross the Rainbow Bridge. For me it happened all in one day. Take time and spent it with your fur baby. You will never regret having done that when it’s time to say goodbye. 😔

I-have been out finding pips all over the place and all my overwintered pots look great! I hope we are past frosts, but in WI you never know. I only bought 3 hostas so far this year, small ones. My neighbor dug out some peonies and I planted some of them in large pots. Do they root and grow easily??? Anyone know? Well, that’s it for me.

Oh Debra I am sending tearful hugs to you. Kibble was so lucky to have found you and had a wonderful life but that is small consolation. It is never easy to make the hard decisions but we have to do the right thing for our beloved companions. My heart goes out to you.

Spring is not the ideal time to dig Peonies but they are tough plants and could be fine, fingers crossed. Late August or early Sept. is the best time to dig/divide.

debra..I'm so sorry about Kibble..your cats have had such long lives..I'm sure you'll miss her..

Debra, you have my condolences about Kibble. 20 years is a lifetime together. I am so sorry.

They're all unique, and I know you will miss her. Many of us know how hard it is to have to make that decision in the end, but you did right by Kibble for a good twenty years. You're such a good cat mom, debra.

Sorry to hear about Kibble…I know she had a good life with you. you were both lucky to find each other🥰

Utog, I hear chemo for animals is better tolerated, hugs to you both!

Debra, ouch! I do not know what is less hurtful, have prolonged illness and loose your companion or have it sudden, not that we have choice in the matter. I neglected a lot recently choosing to spend time with Leo as my priority. No regrets even that my garden looks nearly abandoned and I have upcoming big show.

Sandydslopes, what is that double hellebore name with pink mauve edging? I just love how soft it is looking. I hear Hans Hansen does a lot of hellebores hybridizing.

Found my August Moon did not make it, I repotted it last year. Do not know if I should replace it.

Paula, I keep thinking to ask you about your windows experience. Do and don't when choosing etc if possible.

lindalana, the hellebore in the photo is Peppermint Ice. I’ve had it since 2013 if that helps with who hybridized this one.

Laurie, so far I’ve only had to use the little spray bottle on certain plants for the deer. I’m reluctant to go bigger. But I’ll see if the deer will push me to it.

debra, I’ve grown peonies from bare root, from nursery pots, and moved established plants. They all made it, but as you know they take their time to get established. I’d put them in their permanent home asap.
